Your last paragraph is a bit silly. While all you say might well be true, you can't say it's not good news for them. They can block Trump's legislation and otherwise investigate him. That's clearly a massive win for them, however you want to delude yourself that it isn't. Trump's reign of being able to do what he likes, with silence from congress, is now over.
It's not good news for them because a large part of the party has gone so far into nutter territory that it may damage them in 2020. The leaders of the Democrat party realize this. This is why they keep saying they aren't looking to impeach Trump. However there are plenty of people, elected officials and party base, who expect Trump to be impeached no matter what at some point in the next two years. As for blocking legislation what legislation was there in the first two years? Not a whole lot and if the Democrats go the "we refuse to work with Trump" route he can play that right back at them in 2020. Reign of doing whatever he wants? He never could do what he wants. And he certainly didn't have silence from Congress.
I just saw CNN on the wall screen across the cafeteria at work - "Florida race too close to call." Hanging chads* again?? *(no offense, Chad)
They aren't saying they want to impeach Trump because it is impossible! In order to successfully remove a president you need to two thirds of the Senate. What's the point when they only have the House? P As for what legislation? Did you miss your orange hero's sweeping tax reforms? Oh, and what is "nutter territory"? That seems a farcical claim for and alt-righty like you who still pretends he's mainstream. Also, what is Trump going to do in 2020? You're that certain of his re-election are you? It was not so long ago that you Trumpites were claiming the Democrats were done and wouldn't gain any ground in 2018.
Do you not understand that problem that the Dem leadership is facing? The Dem leadership understands that impeaching Trump is a non-starter. But there are plenty of House Democrats who don't care that the Senate won't remove him. There are plenty of leftist voters who don't care that the Senate won't remove him. They still want to impeach him. Not just for one thing either but multiple things. The Dem leadership is facing that problem. One or two pieces of legislation which are good but in reality Congress has gotten much done. Not alt-right. I'm not a supporter of the alternative to the right. And how can you not see the American left isn't nutty? "However it's not good news for Trump. His 2020 chances have gone down because the Rust Belt gave him the electoral wins needed to be POTUS. Those states went back to Democrats. If the economy falls apart however it could be curtains for him." Does that look like I'm certain of him winning 2020? I still say he has a good shot at 2020 but nothing is certain.
Trump won't be impeached without substantial evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Democrats will work with him. They're going to pass a prescription drug bill. They're going to pass an infrastructure bill. They're going to pass government ethics reform. All things Republicans are going to be under intense pressure to support. This is not going to be a mirror image of Obama-era Republican tantrums and obstruction.
Whereas the GOP is uniformly Trumpian, completely loyal, unquestioning, unthinking. Useful to Trump, but how does it make you feel, being part of such a system? Funny, that's exactly what the GOP did to Obama after 2010, and by 2017 they had brought the Dems to their least powerful position since the 1920s.
I think you might be overstating things a bit here. Yes, there is a rabid wing of DEMS that want to see Trump impeached. I'm not sure how large that group is, but I think they have to understand that as things stand right now, there are no grounds for impeachment. Trump & the GOP have successfully obstructed investigations that might lead to any such thing. The first thing that needs to happen is the wrapping up of the Mueller investigation. Secondly, I know I want some non-sycophants in government to have a look at Trumps tax returns as well as his business dealings. Is he using the office of POTUS to dubiously enrich himself? What leverage if any does Putin have over Trump due to his business dealings in Russia? No one knows at this point. But we're going to find out.
I bet we're not going to find out. That's not cynicism so much as observation based on how this administration works, and how quickly the Democrats will want to appear as being above pettiness, even as Trump and his ilk play in dogshit.
I don't know about that. Now he has a foil in the a Democrat controlled House. Before, he couldn't legitimately blame anything on the Democrats if something went wrong because they weren't in control of anything. Now he can just point to the House and say, "It's all their fault". That might help him in 2020.
You mean the way the republicans spent Obama's tenure blocking everything he tried? Maybe they should just start chanting "lock him up", that doesn't get votes does it? If there's wrongdoing (which I'd bet my house there is aplenty) then it should be exposed, that's not being petty, it's the job of opposition. I think there's an underlying problem here that there's no balance in the two party system, when politics become polarised there's no middle ground and there's very little regulation in the US press incentivising balance over partisanship (that wouldn't fit with the commonplace cultural interpretation of the first amendment). There's a human tribal instinct anyway and populism plays into that, but the system in place does nothing to discourage that.
He's already calling yesterday a "tremendous success" and himself "Magic Man." (Does he get a costume with that, I wonder?) Donnie Delusional.
Wow. This press conference he's been doing for the last hour(?) is crazy. Probably the most combative one I've seen, which is saying something with this president.
Yep, this is all for the rubes that buy the "fake news", bullshit, and he's already setting up he's gonna blame everything including stubbed toes and dandruff on Democrats. It's an infomercial for 2020. Buckle up.
At one point the White House staffer in charge of passing the microphone from reporter to reporter tried to take it from one of the correspondents and he snatched it back from her. And Trump is repeatedly telling reporters to sit down when they try to get him to actually answer the questions they're asking.
every human being on the planet hates Trump - they just don't know it yet but a liberal will come along and soon to show them the error of their ways.
Much like the left currently blames Trump for stubbed toes & dandruff. Damn that will save a lot of time brainstorming for the Trump team - they can just tweak ideas from the left and switch around some words & names when it's speech time.
It's been discussed before, not that I expect Rightforge to acknowledge it from their bubble. But most of the planet do dislike Trump.
Aside from your oh-so-cute little strawman skits, name a time. I can make a list just off this fucking press conference.
I'm pretty sure he was already doing that anyway, and his supporters didnt care if it was true or not.
Gen. Mitchell: Now just a minute! This is a press conference! The last thing I want to do is answer a lot of questions!
I don't think it will make any difference to his supporters. I'm thinking more in terms of independent voters.
There are vast swaths of former Republicans who hate the guy. What's left is the hard-core who are willing to kiss ass, suck cock, lick boots be grabbed by the pussy, whatever...to gain the favor of Fearless Leader.
That press conference is nuts!! It was actually quite funny watching Trump give himself credit for the Republicans who won and say the ones who lost were those who distanced themselves from him. That sort of rhetoric was fun and to be expected. However the whole thing takes a far more sinister turn as he goes to town on each member of the press, refusing to let them ask questions, dishing out personal attacks on these guys. Trying to stay away from hysterical hyperbole, its actually quite troubling the way he is setting things up and the contempt he has for a free press.
Jim Acosta is such a turd. The Republicans gave away the election. If they hadn’t had 45 seats without incumbents, they would have easily held. I failed to understand the importance of incumbency.
+9% of the national House vote is huge, it's only gerrymandering that keep it from being ~60 seats. Downballot gains were significant too. And Governors. And with their worst map to defend literally ever, losing 3(?) Senate seats instead of 7 or 8 is actually a good outcome. The exit polls breakouts are horrifying for the GOP and the 2020 indicators uniformly point against Trump
