But don't they know that is bad for buisness? That eventually owners will get tired and leave? They don't have minimum RAM specs per user? One would think that it would be part of the package.

How much should a site like this use anyway?

Wow. My company siste has 4gb of ram and 4 customers on it, and it doesn't use near the resources a board does.

I have a fast cable modem (8x1mb, business class that tests at 8x1) and a partial t1 that could act as a redundant connection here in my office (t1 is mostly for voice but I have several data channels on it). I will have in a week a spare server I would be happy to throw linux on.

I keep throwing it out, but I get no bites. :0

^ I think you are too new around here. No one knows if you can be trusted. If you get pissed, are you the type to pull the plug?

It's nice that you offer though. If you had been here for a few years, I'm sure your idea would be seriously considered.

Can't we just send them another RAM chip? I mean, I got a gig for my computer for like 70 bucks a while back.

    Oh well.

I've also offered to make paypal donations, and I'm sure others would, were an account set up that we could use. Really... we need at least a vps package of some type to host this.

... a lot of sites don't NEED a lot of ram. This site does though.

    I'm experiencing some slowdowns today.

I, too, would contribute to a paypal account.

The board wasn't available for me to use today (February 5, 2007) starting at about 9:45 a.m. Pacific and ending at about 10:10 a.m. Pacific time.

Not attempting to troll you in this room, look at your rep. You are hardly the most popular poster around here. Do you really expect a community with 4+ years of WF history and Big Blue before that to hand the keys over to an unpopular newbie??

I wonder if the hanging I'm experiencing right now is a sign of things to come this evening. It seems like on evenings with major events in the US the board hangs or goes down. It has taken me about 5 minutes each time I click on a link to take me virtually anywhere on the site. For me it is 5:38 p.m. Pacific time.

It hung up and eventually timed out on me at around 12pm CST on 5 February.

A couple of minor slowdowns during the evening of 5 February, but never a timeout.

There are problems at the moment, but as Elwood said they are being addressed and once the situation is fixed the problems should be a thing of the past.

    In a word: no.

In a phrase: hosting a site is not having the keys to a site.

And another phrase or perhaps question is, do you think the majority of the membership, would wish you to have anything to do with it??

Of course it would be a better question of the owners opinion on you hosting, but since Im not about to attempt to second guess him I'll leave it at membership.

What about my idea of paypal donations then, for a better server? I've thrown a lot of options out here, and no one seems to care - except when the board hangs, which is often.

This is a cool board, so why no dice on wanting a stable host?

We do want a stable host, but at the moment we've already prepaid for hosting through the end of February.

Right now we're looking at a couple hosts to get up and running before the end of February so we can move.

I can't speak for Elwood, but I think the reason that paypal donations aren't setup are because people might think that they are exempt from the rules and being banned if they donate, but thank you for your offer, it is most appreciated.

I wouldn't think anyone would be exempted from bannings.

You guys don't really ban a lot though, do you?

Couldn't access the board at all for about 15 minutes or so at around 2110 CST.

It was very sluggish before and after that.

    So make a clause.

Give everyone that donates 'one' rep point.
