Same could be said if she had a herniated disc - tens of thousands of law-abiding, but uninsured, people with disc issues can't afford surgery that inmates get.

Per the courts, essential medical treatment - and if a thing is making you suffer every minute of the day it's essential to treat it - is our obligation when we incarcerate someone, per the Bill of Rights.

You're just inviting even more problems on the inmate since now they are seen as special above and beyond regular inmates.

The state has a direct vested interest in discouraging such operations in the future so it behooves them to make the transition difficult

It's VERY likely not a single guard or administrator in the places approves of the operation so there's inherent animosity and bias against any accommodation however minor

AND

the complaint has merit because it gives the appearance of official approval of bullying and abuse

AND

someone walking around a women's prison with a bear is a big neon "assault me please!" sign for everyone to see, and a scarlet letter that communicates this person is not to be taken seriously

AND

for a trans person, ALL sex specific characteristics are a source of dysphoria, thus it is irrational to spend thousands of dollars to correct one source while spitefully withholding a TINY investment that would relieve another sort

MOST OF ALL there's a little thing that civilized people do called "take it on a case by case basis" in which in this case, if the prison intakes a prisoner with a particular special need - say they are in a wheelchair, or wear a knee brace, or take insulin injections, they make reasonable accommodations in order to integrate the special need into their policies. Compared to many other individual considerations that are handled as a matter of routine, a SLIGHT modification allowing for this person to be able to shave at least once a day is NOTHING and fuckers like Diner who had rather see a person suicidal as receive that minor adjustment ought to go ahead and be consistent and call for summary execution of all inmates and be done with it, or face the fact that they are an obvious and proud bigot.

I have to agree in that I do not see reassignment surgery in the same light as a herniated disc. This person is in prison for murder and something like this is most definitely elective.

As for this latest bit of drama, I'm fairly skeptical of law enforcement (and anyone in authority) in general, but I'm not seeing any evidence that this treatment is in any way different from how the other inmates are treated.

if you have an inmate that needs regular insulin injections, do the other inmates consider it an "extra" that the need is accommodated?

Again, this person is in jail for murder. I'm not terribly sympathetic toward any "suffering" they might be doing due to this particular condition.

So why cut the line here and not insulin for diabetics or surgery for herniated discs or the pricey meds for those who are HIV positive?
