I don't even think the age/looks thing matters, you'd be hard pushed to find many women who haven't had to deal with a Pepe Le Pew at some point.
It’s clear we all have different definitions of what cancel culture is. I think the left spends too much time obsessing over the words people say, then they let the media play them for fools. Take this stupid Sharon Osborne fiasco for instance. She did a pretty inept job at defending her friend and because of that CBS declares the show has to go on hiatus. The show comes back sans Sharon Osborne and now we have Sheryl Underwood claiming she has PTSD from the whole incident. No Sheryl, you don’t have PTSD. You’re just playing to the camera. More energy should be focused on the actions of cancel culture versus the words. I’ve been reading about what’s going on in Missouri for instance. The people voted for Medicaid expansion and now the Republicans in the state legislature want to cancel the will of the people by refusing to fund the expansion. This version of cancel culture is much more nefarious and deserves much more media coverage.
That is what talk shows are for. Sharon was trodding like a bigfoot in a mine field for years. Now she stepped on one and of course they are going to pump up the drama. People have to realize that is not real life. It is a scripted talk show and they scripted sharon out for ratings. Meanwhile in the real world we have @oldfella1962 over there. Have we cancelled him for being offensively racist? No. Have we cancelled uncle Albert? Some people go down an extreme road like in our orbiting detention center at TK, but for the most part we just go on with out lives and no one gets cancelled.
Don't worry, we can handle you. We can run all afoul of you as we want because you are an asshole and have no teeth. As long as we have shields for your poopon torpedoes and shitphasers we will be fine.
I agree. But, I'm missing something in reference to cancel culture. Are you suggesting that if you're not being an asshole, someone may come up to you and ... what? accuse you of being an asshole?
Yes. Cancel culture is little more than a continuation of a theme seen across history, including such things as blackballing and McCarthyism, and hooks into a lot of the same psychological needs and power structures as religion does. It will eventually go away, and something similar will spring up for all the wannabe inquisitionists to go get their jollies from.
Depends what they're getting cancelled for. Dixie Chicks? Leave 'em alone. Bill Cosby? Good fucking riddance. People that get on their fainting couch over cancelling would probably gladly have another Fat Albert movie. We sure as fuck know they want Gina Carano at all fucking costs.
So ..., I was born female. I have had certain life experiences that were not at all happy or fun. And I have had to live with them all my life. Now, you, as a man - born and raised as a man and having had male experiences and lived in a world in which female experiences have been downplayed and ridiculed; and now that women are speaking up and asking men to please stop being assholes and/or acknowledge that some men are assholes and please help us make them stop; and now you want to write a book that shows how you, as a man, are being damaged because you can no longer downplay and ridicule women for being overly sensitive about assholes and that book is "cancelled" and you think the women are being assholes for no reason?
Given nothing I wrote, or indeed the article I linked to, said, intimated or implied any of that, you'll have to expand a little.
Then perhaps you'll need to expand a little. The article you linked to discusses people who have previously been marginalized for things they cannot possibly control (the color of their skin) and, by extension, their interests. Now, white people, who have not been marginalized, want to take up those same interests and are being praised even paid (in some cases in the millions of dollars). In these cases, do you not see how the marginalized person would/could get upset? As for what I posted, well, that's every day life. That you also think asking someone not to write a book and make a profit off your pain is being an asshole?
Welcome to how I feel about Quentin Tarantino aping low-budget cult films, but he won't throw any money towards helping Lloyd Kaufman who makes the real fucking thing.
You can't make a low budget cult film if you sell out. There is a reality with the fanbase that if some indie low budget cult film maker got some money thrown at them, even if there were no strings attached, the fans would strill call them a sell out because most of the fanbase for shit like that are fucking posers anyway. What would starbucks do without people like that? Go out of business, that is for fucking sure.
What do you want? Some golden girls and some cheesecake? I am too far away, but I will watch some, eat some cheesecake, and have a cryfest with you over the great unknown.
I'd gladly weather the shitty fans (and remember, I'm a Ghostbusters remake defender, I can weather a lot) if it meant Lloyd got to make a really good Toxic Avenger 5 before he died.
What part of toxic avenger could money make better? Bigger bouncier boobies? More slime and blood? That shit is cheap by today's standards of CGI. If you fund those projects too much all you are going to get is a lot more coke overdoses.
3-D rotating freeze time like JL: Snyder Cut. Lots of it. Snyder Cut has the floating sesame seed? Toxie 5, a glistening turd shooting out of a bum.
Ok. Just got around to reading the article in full. and, while my previous statements are still true regarding the article, they do not address the full issue of what happened with the knitting thing. Here's what happened. Person A opened a virtual community for knitters. Person A invited people to join and invited those people to invite others. The small virtual community became a large virtual community At some point, someone posted an insensitive remark Someone commented on that remark Someone took offense to the insensitive remark Someone took offense because someone took offense at an insensitive remark Enough people of a certain marginalized background had joined the group Those people posted a lot of insensitive things to anyone who defended the poster of the insensitive remark or defended the remark itself. Sounds like wordforge. - except the part of becoming a large virtual community. Again, don't be an asshole and assholes won't call you on it.
"Asshole" is subjective, and people who appoint themselves the sole arbiters of policing for what is acceptable expression are THE LAST people who should be left in charge of it.
So the person/people who came up with and support this bullshit? 8. In General, Don't Be A Complete Asshole. At WordForge, we value free expression; more so than most other sites. However, the aim here is to have open debates, and fun. The aim is not to figure out a way to break the site or its community beyond repair. Free speech is part of a triad of what we value, and depends on its other two parts: including individual members, and overall community. If your use of free speech interferes with either of the other parts, there will be consequences, including but not limited to anything from warnings to temporary or even permanent bans. We trust our staff to make that call. If you feel that you do not know how to avoid being a complete asshole without a set of detailed instructions, this might not be the right site for you. These rules are subject to change at any time. A notice of rule change will be posted in the Help Desk should it be required. If you have any questions, please start a thread in the Help Desk.
So, we're sitting on the futon watching a movie and you say to me "that bitch is daft" and I say "why does she gotta be a bitch?" and you say "who cares? She's daft" and I say "I care. I take offense to the word "bitch"." Do you say to yourself "Fuck that, Jenee is not the sole arbiter of whether or not a word is offensive, so I'm going to keep using it." Or do you say to yourself "Jenee doesn't like the use of that word, and I don't wish to hurt her feelings, so I won't use the word"
