Does Hugo escape to Switzerland or does he get Ceausescued in the streets or show trial after the coup?

A populist tyrant or a military junta...

    How depressing.

Funny how 'some' Americans still think they know better than the people who elected him. You'd think a lifetime of badly failed regime changes would cure even the most upright bringer of democracy (by force) :borg:

Why? Democracy isn't inherently superior to any other system of divining kings; it's primary function to keep resentment from the populace down. Huddled masses aren't mystically privy to any special wisdom; if anything, they're inhibited by the average man's lack of rationality.

The Miami Herald is widely considered a leader in Latin American coverage.

I suppose we should discount all major news sources because of the "crazies" that share the same general location as they.

Forget it Chris, everyone know that if it's not in Pravda, the New York Times, or on International ANSWER's website, it's corporate propaganda.

Edited to add: I forgot to add Free Speech TV.

    :dayton:

The NYT is a piece of shit.

You are correct that the corporate media in the US is uniformly slanted on this issue, and understandably so. Thus unnamed "sources" do not cut it.

That sounds strangely different from your government's position when it has yet another 3rd world shithole in its sights.

IIRC, American news media (outside of cable television, thank you Rupert Murdoch :garamet: ) is generally unbiased, especially when compared to the rest of the world.

But the same thing applies: They wanted him, they have him. I don't see him starting an invasion of the US

And yet he's trying to destabilize his neighborhood.

What's the difference between a dagger and a sword if they accomplish the same thing?

Define 'destabilize'. I see Latin America swing more to the left but that's all. As long as the US won't outlaw anything to the left of Dick Cheney's right nipple on a global basis, that's their perogative. Obviously, all the CIA backed dictators haven't brought paradise 'round so they are looking for something else.

As for the rest, what are you rambling on about? The Chavez administration has been notoriously apologetic for the actions of FARC and suspiciously close.

Do you deny that FARC is an organization that seeks to overthrow the legitimate government of Colombia? Do you deny the history of groups similar to FARC that attempt to "spin-off" similar movements in neighboring countries/regions?

Say what want about my people's foreign adventures, there has been little defensible middle ground, despite all your best wishes and excuses. Our actions were in response to the actions of the Soviet Union; that's what Colombia started as. Ultimately, I preferred that we prevailed in the scheme of things.

While I wish we had the luxury of wringing our hands and waving our fingers as you have seen fit, the reality and gravity of the situation required real and terrible action.

    That's always the excuse. :jayzus:

[Insert Anything Here] was justified because of communism.

    And now we have:

[Insert Anything Here] is justified because of terrorism.
