It would have been better if there were an upfront explicit statement that the thread title would be changed to anything reasonable Volpone wanted once he was back around to comment and decide, but otherwise I, at least, have no complaints beyond that over how this was handled. A thread title that, it can reasonably be assumed (and has since been confirmed by Volpone), the thread author would have changed had he known how uncomfortable it made TKO and had he been around to do so was changed while the thread author was incommunicado. What's the big fucking deal? If no one had crapped all over the board before Volpone got back, this would have been resolved quite easily to everyone's satisfaction.
Volpone could have requested the title be changed to something (relatively)non-offensive of his choosing when he came back online. Heck, he still can though there would be little point now.
Volpone can read minds? Perhaps we should have a list for each member...... Volpone can say X to a,b,c but not to d,e,f on subject 1 Volpone is clear to talk to everyone on subject 2 Volpone can not say anything on subject 3 Always spout off. In the end it makes life easier. If you keep your yap shut then you can not complain if someone accidentally strays into territory you don't like. If she felt bad about it from day one then she should have laid down the law from day one. And let me say for the general board: The constant "chasing" of female teenagers and to some extent the adult females is disgusting and it should have had a chainsaw taken to it from the start. Keep that shit to the PM system if you must be dirty perverts.
You know, I believe that each one of these incidents is going to get worse, and for less overall provocation, since there is a cumulitive effect going on. It's not at a critical stage yet, but it will be. I think the reasons for that cumulitive effect should be talked over a bit by the staff amongst themselves. And without anyone saying 'They're just trolling'.
None. My point is that if you let a poster say something over and over and over you can't complain if someone else jumps into the game. If it bothers you from day one then it has to be stopped on day one even if it means large portions of the board turn on you. Volpone could not have predicted this response from TKO. He had seen enough other responses that he probably would have predicted the exact opposite.
Agreed...which is why he wasn't warned. The staff simply responded to a user request...how could they not?
I agree. Especially that last part. I posted something about that in another thread that got lost, so I'll repost it here: Did I attack TKO? No. I've never even spoken to her. And I've had a problem with the harrasment, and the overall jailbait fixation that occurs here. Frankly, I find it pathetic. And I've also had a problem with those who have tried to turn WF into Plato's Retreat: Internet.
I've no real problem with the title change. However the mods in handling this have once again painted big ass targets on themselves with Listy being the biggest ass target of them all.
What exactly did "the mods" do, besides perform the minimum amount of intervention possible to satisfy the request? Isn't the entire uproar pretty much about that title change that you just said you didn't have a problem with?
Wrong board. Here the mods just say you're shitstorming. A word thrown at me and some others in the past. We even got a nifty smilie for it:
It was what happened after the intervention. It could have been handled better. Without slandering Volpone, seeing Flashlight basically commit BBS suicide and pissing off a lot of people.
The only mods being involved in this shit was Nick and Listy (to which I'd agree that yeah, they acted pretty rude and shitty as well).
Agreed that is could have been handled better from a PR point of view. Everyone knows not all the staff is charming and lovable. That doesn't make all their actions inappropriate. However, Flashlight is responsible for his own behavior. He knew what he was doing and chose not to control himself.
I say "the mods" because it is not just this incident. It is almost every incident. As much as they accuse posters of shitstorming they themselves are just as guilty.
Then perhaps the owner should get off his duff and hammer home to the non-charming and non-lovable ones to shut their mouths when in public and a incident breaks out. Listkeeper changing the title was fine. Listkeeper afterwards was not. In fact Listkeeper is fuel on almost every fire that erupts on this board. That is true. However it may have not happened had things been handled better.
Agreed. Agreed that he won't earn mod of the year for this incident. I don't know about being the fuel on every fire on the board though. That is probably a slight exaggeration. Maybe. But it definitely wouldn't have happened if Flashlight controlled himself in the Help Desk.
Which completely begs the question of why a thread of a sensitive nature with short tempers got transferred to the Help Desk. [my point, being that Nick doesn't do this place any favors when he tries to "fix" things on his own. ]
It is a standing order from Elwood that policy discussion goes into the Help Desk. He was following orders there as he should. This is an issue I can't resolve for you...contact Elwood if you want to change his mind on that one.
I find it very amusing that in the name of protecting "freedom," some people are calling for a credit-card verified age limit in order to post here. There is no way I would post on a board like that. That is much worse than the Patriot-Act-approach. "If there is a minor problem, you impose age verification on anyone." As for Listkeeper and Nick, I don't think it is any big secret that I don't agree with everything they do, but I think it also needs to be pointed out that no matter what they do, there will be a select group who will use it as justification for an uprising. And I still think the constant "TKO was asking for it by letting other things go by in the past" remarks are totally inappropriate. A very clearly definable line was crossed: When remarks went from drooling over her to talk of deflowering her, that is different. Most guys don't see the point: In a guy's mind, drooling over a girl is quite often the expression of the desire to get her in bed. Girls don't always seem to understand that. They believe (perhaps naively) that guys who are interested in seeing their bodies will still respect them where sex is concerned. And maybe that's the way guys should be. Maybe the "right to admire" shouldn't imply the "right to possess." Be that as it may, guys and girls don't see these things the same way. I have worked with teenagers for enough years (guys and girls) to have seen tht very clearly. In TKO's mind a line was crossed. To guys, crossing that line is no big deal. To some girls, it's no big deal, either. To her, it was a problem. She didn't make a big deal out of it; she simply asked (politely enough) for the title to be changed. It wasn't, so she asked a mod to change it. And for that, people are basically calling her immature and saying that she and anyone else her age should be banned from the Red Room. And they say that the mods overreacted?
Well there seem to be two different groups coming at the age limit for the Red Room idea. The first is the group that you address. The second is the people pointing out that when it is said that the normal Red Room type rules don't address the particulars of posters who are underage, there is a choice to either adjust the rules to accomodate them, or keep the rules the same and block them.
Or you deal with an issue like this on the rare occasion it comes up, on a case by case basis. It is whats best for the community and the fairest way to handle what hopefully will be very unusual circumstances and not a recurring theme. God knows, a longer rules list and more restriction won't work. It doesn't anywhere else.
