This is a large part of the problem. What we didn't like about TBBS was that everything there was governed by rules, and whenever the mob wanted to get after someone, they clamoured for more rules. The WordForge way has always been to keep to a minimum of rules, and let the staff deal with situations that aren't strictly covered by the rules (a situation that is bound to occur now and then with minimum rules) on the basis of common sense.

And now, too many people are all up in arms about the "rules."

"But the rules say we have a right to say what we want, and the mods shouldn't ever have the right to take special circumstances into account, even for something as minor as a thread-title change, or we will scream that the sky is falling!" :sob:

    :ohnoes:

Like I said: Is it really the mods who are overreacting here?

[action=Ancalagon]wades in after all the drama.[/action]

Okay, I admit I haven't read every post on the subject, but I have gotten a pretty good picture. A couple of points.

    1) The RedRoom has a warning for a reason. People are going to get offended, heck that is part of what this board is based upon!

    2) I personally don't see what was so bad about Volpone's post. Then again I have crossed the line before with Bulldog and ShootER and had to apologize so maybe my view of where the 'line' is located is a bit off. Just my opinion though.

    3) If TKO was offended, it should have been handled between her and Volpone, either in the thread or via PM. There was no need for a Mod to change the thread title. I could be wrong but I have the feeling Volpone would have changed it if asked.

    4) Once again it seems the mods through both words and actions did all they could do to fan the flames. WTF? Is it just me or do some appear to like the drama they always bitch about?

    No it is not different.

The drooling is as bad as the talk of deflowering since the drooling words were sexual in such a nature. In fact given Volpone's thread the drooling is a thousand times worse in this particular case becasue he never intended the thread to be about sex but about neg reps.

It is very hard to tell what is acceptable and what isn't on a internet board. You don't have that face to face time you have in real life. If you let someone continually make sexual comments about you and then someone comes along and does what Volpone did you'd be hard pressed to complain about him. He can only go by what he sees written on the screen and if he sees you not doing anything or actively encouraging it by saying sexual things back he is going to assume it is ok to do what he did.

Are you really sure that you can say what differences can constitute "offensive" to someone else and what differences can't? In your mind (and in my mind, for that matter--I happen to agree with you here) one is as bad as the other. But that doesn't change the fact that there is an objective difference. Talk about admiring TKO's body, and deflowering her, are not the same thing and it is entirely possible for someone to feel offended by one while tolerating the other.

As I have stated elsewhere, a gentleman will back off when a girl feels he has crossed a line even if he can't understand the nature or even the existence of the line he has crossed. All the talk of, "But this is no worse," amounts to trying to convince her that, since she has accepted A, she is morally bound to accept B even though she feels uncomfortable with it. It is an old trick, used by guys since time immemorial, but it is not rationally or morally defensible. Sometimes what makes a person uncomfortable is very subjective, and cannot be defined or even understood by others. (And sometimes not even by the person themselves, for that matter.)

You are in no position to tell her that she doesn't have a right to be offended by one when she wasn't offended (or at least not enough to put a stop to it) by the other. You and I might think it wasn't wise for her to encourage the drooling, but the last thing we want on WF is for those of us who feel that something isn't right to try to impose our moral values on others. She accepted it; that's her business. She didn't want to accept the other; that's her business, too.

Irrelevent. The problem was not with Volpone's intent (which even TKO agrees was innocent) but with her feelings. Haven't you ever offended someone without intending it? Does that mean that the offense isn't real? And let's be serious, the whole reason Volpone chose the title he did was because he knew that everyone's initial reaction would be to take it in a sexual way. He said as much in the first post, at least the way it was originally worded.

I've been trying so hard not to use the G-Word. I'm glad someone did.

I suppose some people enjoy BBS's simply because they don't have to be gentlemen on the internet....whereas they do in real life.

So acting rudely on a board might be form of escapism.

Nothing wrong with it, but in my opinion there are still lines that even a cyber-gentleman should not cross....but to each his own I guess.

Gentleman is a quaint and outdated concept. I prefer that people show their naked self, warts and all.

Provided it doesn't include showing your consideration for someone who feels violated by talk about "deflowering" her by changing the offending thread title. That side of people shouldn't be shown because it is so offensive that it will cause all kinds of problems on the board...

I'm really not clear on your point here. The complaint about TheListkeeper is that he tried to cover up Volpone's warts. I see nothing inconsistent with that.

No, he wasn't. He was making the object of the post feel less threatened.
Thinking about Vol was probably the last thing on his mind.

Not at all. Just stating cold, hard fact, and encouraging those who want a board run like TK to go to TK.

It doesn't surprise me that you quickly jump to label any who question your authority as a troll. That doesn't make the case that they are, however.

I don't have to make a case for it. They do that quite well themselves.

And they will continue to be treated with all the lack of courtesy and disrespect they deserve.

Ummmm....you do realize that you're considered to be one of the bigger trolls on the board?

Now, weather you do it for effect, or your just too stupid to realize the extra problems you cause the rest of the staff ever time you open your flap, is open for debate.
