was that because the intended audience kept mistaking it for real news and shooting up stuff?

The fact that so many people put so much stock (pardon the pun) in Twitter as a source of information and means of communication is nothing less than disturbing.

It is still not twitter. You are a fucking history major so you should be well aware that twitter is a starbuck's refining of myspace.

I guess I have not been paying enough attention to this. There is a good possibility Musk has purchased twitter so he can identify and go after people who said bad things about him in the real world.

In the video they expose instances where Elon has found out a person's identity and called their employer to threaten them with lawsuits because that person criticized him on line.

This has nothing to do with trump. This is Elon weaponizing twitter against the people who have been criticizing the rich and powerful by gathering their data so they can get them fired.

Hey @steve2^4 want some popcorn while we watch all the twitter trolls burn for their speech? Holy shit is this bad.

There are ~5 billion people who have a reliable connection to the internet (ie, they can access the majority of it, any time they want, as opposed to those who have no connection, or can only access it part of the time). Of those, only a few hundred million are on Twitter. FB has ~2 billion active users. Twitter, undoubtedly, punches above its weight in places like the US and the rest of the developed world but starts to fall off when you move outside of those areas.

I have 10 news apps on my phone, plus a dedicated browser on my PC that I launch with 16 tabs for news sites, plus an RSS reader with 10 news site feeds. You know what the edge Twitter has over all of those things? Control. I've had to disable the alerts for most of the news apps on my phone, and severely restrict the alerts I get from the two that I allow to send me alerts. Why? Because 99% of the shit that they want to tell me about is shit I couldn't give a flying fuck about. I don't care if this or that sports team has done this or that. I don't care if this or that Hollywood couple has done something. If I launch a news app, I have to wade through all kinds of shit I don't care about, just to get to the content I'm interested in. The same is often true with the RSS feeds, or news sites that I visit.

But with Twitter? I really can control the alerts I get. I don't have to worry that I'll get an alert about what's trending, or what's popular. I don't even have to see content I'm not interested in, from news organizations I trust, because I can follow the reporters who cover those topics. Not only will they tweet when they publish a story, but I can choose if I get an alert about if they've tweeted or not. (Handy, if a reporter is on the ground where something interesting is going on and I want to keep up with things as they happen.)

Additionally, unlike any of the news apps I've used, I can interact with the reporters. So, if they've gotten something wrong, or if I'd like clarification on something, there's a chance that I can get a response. With the news apps or FB? A whole lot less likely.

Also, FB is far more aggressive with their algorithm and what it chooses to show me. I pulled the app off my phone because I got tired of getting all the notifications that it sent me that I didn't give a shit about, no matter how much I limited them. On my PC, I use the Social Fixer plug-in to override a shitload of FB's nonsense. (Seriously, I don't give a shit that somebody made a post a week ago in a particular group. I've already seen that post, didn't care about it, but FB thinks that if they show it to me again, I'll suddenly develop an interest in it.) Twitter doesn't do anywhere near that amount of shit.

Oh, and if Musk flakes on the deal to buy Twitter, he's only out $1 billion. It'll also have to be approved by EU regulators. So, we'll see what happens.

They banned porn and we all left for Twitter afterwards.

    That's why.

That said, I fully expected Tumblr to have died by now and I continue to be disappointed by it's survival like a Hiroshima cockroach.

Interesting. I don't have any reason to think he doesn't believe this. But I'm very skeptical he can make it happen, and I'm still certain he wants to censor criticism of him.

Plus having him running Twitter can only be bad for Tesla and SpaceX.

That's right, folks, banning some trolls from a website is equivalent to 50 years of apartheid.

Remember when FB made the decision not to censor fascist posting their algorithms detected because it was indistinguishable from conservatives?

    "Reality has a liberal bias".

The Right is far more likely to engage in batshit conspiracy stuff because - well, frankly, how else can they justify that society is leaving them behind? It couldn't possibly be that their ideas are outdated, irrelevant and deserve to decay on the compost heap of history, could it?

It's really too bad that Elon Musk is such a crazy twunt.

Whatever else you can say, at least SpaceX and Tesla are turning the dial on human progress.

Now that all may come crashing down because of Musk's stupid fucking ego.

    1. Fuck Elon Musk.
    2. Should he end up buying Twitter, I wonder if he'll stop me from posting that picture of him buddying up with Ghislaine Maxwell?
    3. If he does stop me, I wonder how many times it will take? If not, I'll have to add that picture of him saying that he'll coup anyone he wants.

I think SpaceX is pretty great. Mostly indifferent about Tesla, though I would note that Tesla drivers are pretty close to Audi and BMW drivers when it comes to the entitled asshole factor. Not a fan of Musk's personality or his social media antics. As for Twitter, I guess we'll see how it goes. I don't agree with his "de facto public square" comments, but as the owner he will have the right to do whatever he wants with it, once the deal is final of course.

I’m like 85% sure Tesla’s stock price is only what it is because SpaceX is private and this is the closest thing to being able to invest in it most people can come.

Here's an interesting tidbit I learned today: One of the terms of the deal is that there's going to be no due diligence of Twitter. So Musk will have no idea of the company's finances or obligations. He's also technically violated the terms of the disparagement clause and Twitter could use that to terminate the deal (and collect $1 billion from Musk in the process).

The earliest Musk could close the deal is in October, and that's if there's no objection from the shareholders of Twitter, and various government regulators in the US and the EU. (EU regulators have already said that some of the things that Musk wants to do with Twitter are illegal in the EU.)

    :corn:
