I think the real issue here is the underlying suggestion that being bald (whether by choice or medical condition) is somehow shameful.

I've always said to my better half that the minute I get a good-sized bald spot, the whole shebang is coming off.

No Donald Trump combover and no William Shatner hairpiece.

Nah. You just wash your face and go. I’ve shaved my head for 20 years now, and even though I could grow a luxurious head of hair, I’ll never go back.

What if you have dents? When I was in high school the guy who monitored the parking lot had dents in his head that would collect water when it rained. you would figure they would make some sort of spackle or something for that shit.

Side note: I didn't care for "The Drumhead" when it first aired. Now, I think it's one of TNG's better episodes. Jean Simmons totally brings it as Admiral Satie.

It would be weird for Will to get "cancelled" after this incident but not Jared Leto for all the shit he pulls in the name of "method" acting...

Sheesh, all Howard Stern did was flash his cheeks as Fartman, and MTV still hasn't taken him back.
A decade from the Oscars for an assault is a slap on the wrist in comparison.

    You're not that far off,TBH.

I've spoken to Hollywood folks who say all the award shows are tedious and boring and many hate going to these things.

I'm betting there's gonna be even more slaps that ever before next year! :polarslam2:

But no seriously, it's interesting what Hollywood chooses to punish and who they go all out to wag their fingers at.

Janet Jackson? Cancelled for showing titty nipple for a second so brief I missed it as I looked down. Banned from the Super Bowl for life.

Justin Timberlake? Exposer of said titty. Had his ban rescinded and has performed at least twice since 2003

Hell, the very first person to be kicked out the Academy was due to him pirating out the DVDs they send to voters for the purpose of selecting the winners, a whole fifteen years before Weinstein, Polanski and Cosby were shown the door.

Speaking of that, Polanski got banned 4 decades after his conviction and subsequent fleeing of the country for the ridiculously light 45 day sentence that a judge raised to three months.

Cosby? Banned within four weeks of his sentencing.

    Draw your own conclusions

There is reason to believe that Littlefeather wasn’t completely honest:

I’m skeptical. Why did all this come out AFTER the academy apologized? No one disputed her claims for 50 years and now there’s questions? Also, the author of the article never actually quotes the sisters. Many sentences begin with “her sisters said” or “her sisters told me”.

I don’t care one way or another. I just find it extremely irritating that when one person gains something, there’s immediately a pile-on to discredit and harass that person.

Also, wouldn’t the academy have security evidence of Wayne having to be held back? If that wasn’t true, why would the academy apologize - especially after 50 years. They really didn’t need to.

Read the article. Her two legally recognized sisters, who both go by their original given, hispanic names, stated they didn't think it was worth dredging up a 50 year old incident they were embarrassed by until the academy brought it back up.

The academy, Brandon, and the rest were no doubt earnest in their positions based on the information they had. Brando's comments she delivered were no less true.

But clearly this women at best sought to use an identity she didn't actually possess to further her own career, or worse had some form of mental illness. Her sisters clearly believed she was using a false Native American identity for her own advantage.

While she's not around to defend herself, the fact that this article is written by a noted indigenous activist, her sisters could provide significant proof such as her birth name and her father's history and ancestral records back 200 years, and the native tribe she claimed membership of had no record of her, means that this is almost certainly the truth.

I’m embarrassed about most of the things my siblings say and do. If one made it to celebrity status for something that I’m embarrassed about, is it right for me to puff up myself and insert my own version of those experiences? Or should I just let it go and get on with my own life?

I think you should tell the truth and let that go where it may.

You should definitely set the matter straight if your sibling starts lying about their parents. No, not matters of perception, but overt facts. Such as whether or not your father was an abusive drunk, when indeed it turned out that it was HIS father who was the abusive drunk and she stole that story to make her own upbringing more sympathetic.

And I hardly think the White Mountain Apache Tribe would deny one of their own members due to a sibling rivalry.

And this is the part where you should think about Carl Sagan's bit in The Demon Haunted World where he addresses how it is harder to reject the con once conned, because it's often too painful for people to acknowledge they've been taken.

You are arguing about something you don’t even know is the truth. That was my point.

You go ahead and believe what you want to believe. I’m still skeptical.

A number of Indigenous people have mentioned that this author has a very long pattern of going after other Indigenous people of mixed ancestors with these kinds of articles, so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

As high profile as she is, I too am fairly suspicious why this didn't come up at any point between 1972 and today, especially when John Wayne and angry enough to want to beat her ass after the Oscars.

Eh, speaking as someone who grew up when John Wayne was basically a god to the American public I can see why nobody's said much about any of this. There's conflicting stories about what actually happened that night (and some video evidence that doesn't support Littlefeather's account), but even today, there's some pretty dark shit about Wayne folks generally don't know. Like he was abusive to his various wives and that some of them may not have been of legal age when he shacked up with them (but he was certainly old enough to be their daddy).

I don't know whether that stuff about Sacheen Littlefeather is true, but there are two things I know are true. I would never want to share a cab with John Wayne or Andy Dick.

How very binary. There is absolutely no reason to believe that if John Wayne was an asshole that Sascha Littlefeather is not a liar.

Both things appear to be true in this case.

So what's the motivation for the sisters? And why does her tribe not list her or any of her known descendants on their roles?

Or are you stating that the author is actively lying about these things?

It did. Dennis Miller made a pretty tasteless joke about her lack of authenticity a decade ago.

But it was like the rumors about Cosby. People didn't want to dig into it too deep at first.

For that matter, lots of people didn't want to believe anything about the Duke either when things first started coming out.

    Confirmation bias is strong.

There's also a rash of people being outed for claiming native American ancestry in academia, particularly in Canada, due to preferences in hiring practices.

You keep talking about tribes and people “not listed”. Did it occur to you that many Native Americans might opt out of being on a list or registry? I know many Native Americans who are only on the list for residual income. They do not practice nor live like many of the poor and targeted Native Americans. Their only claim to Native is that they get a check every quarter.
