I realise this is customary, but I don't understand why. To my understanding, the US is not officially at war with Iran or Iraq, and this is clearly an act of war against both. Why doesn't it need Congressional approval?

They have condemned it harshly. The victim of the attack was in the country with their permission. You can't not know this.

The problem is that the US thinks it owns the world and will claim any act of aggression it commits is defensive in nature.

Because details (or even imminent intent) would leak out and turn a simple, safe easy task into a very dangerous messy debacle. You never served during combat I take it?

The reasoning is probably that this was "just another drone strike, like we do all the time with smaller fish." That this one is precipitating an international crisis, well . . . one has but to cast an eye on the moron in the White House to understand.

Iranian support is what’s keeping the current regime from being overthrown by the popular protests/uprisings that have taken over central and southern parts of the country.

They definitely don’t support this attack.

My understanding is that the strike would be justified if it were in response to an imminent threat, but also that Congress must be notified. It's the law, not mere custom.

Okay, so all the times Isreal wanted to kill Soleimani, but didn't, because of the repercussions it would have, they were just pussies that didn't know how the world works?
Wow, criticizing Israel, that's automatic anti-semitism.

Today in this thread I learned that if Saddam had assassinated Cheney it wouldn't have been an act of war.

Oh anything's an act of war when aimed at the fragile egos of the Conservative Right. Just try saying Happy Holidays to them and watch them kick off.

Ambassador Tina Kaidanow, senior adviser for international cooperation, has left the Pentagon, the Department of Defense confirmed to Defense News Wednesday.

Why it matters: She's the fifth top official in seven days to exit or announce their departure from the Pentagon, according to Defense News and The Hill.

    History:
Under Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, Soleimani was to be removed from international sanctions after eight years, though Sec State Kerry promised that sanctions against Soleimani would be in place “forever.”

July 2018 Trump and Iran (Soleimani) trade threats by tweet.
4/2019 Soleimani added to terrorist no-fly list.
6/2019 Iran shot down US drone. [US no retaliation]
5/2019 Iran attacks oil tankers in Gulf Oman. [US no retaliation]
9/2019 Iran burns oil fields of Saudi Arabia (a US ally) [US no retaliation]
12/2019 Iran reportedly behind rocket attack that kills American contractor [US no retaliation]
12/31/2019 Iran attacks US embassy in Iraq. Terrorist attackers literally sign Soleimani's name on US embassy.

    Current:
Still in the 'fog of war' with 98% opinion despite only having maybe 2% of facts & intel. So nobody knows shit, except that above list of facts has been reported by both right and left wing news.

    Apparently:
Trump has finally converted the Dems to join Trump as anti war. Until this morning Dems (cept Tulsi) were pro war at every step (perhaps from antiTrump derangement?).
Trump accepted US intel reports when he approved this mission (explicitly contradicting what every Dems has ever claimed they knew about Trump).
And we exterminated a terrorist (or at very least a uniformed combatant who promised to kill more American forces).
Hezbollah lost a general who reportedly has killed and maimed thousands of Americans. Yet unlike say killing Bin Laden 'just' for revenge, Soleimani posed future threat.

Conclusion: US still doesn't want a war w Iran. The US will not enter a war in Iran. US soldiers won't be sent to Iran to die for sand or regime change. AND Future Iranian terrorists will be more careful about vacations in Iraq or attacking US targets (and maybe targeting US allies too).

do you have access to all the secure information (and a "need to know") that might indicate an imminent threat? Thus how the holy fuck do you know if there was or was not an imminent threat?
If an imminent threat is thwarted (and trust me plenty are on a continual basis) do you think U.S. security/military experts are going to go on TV (and call you personally of course) and give the world a play-by-play of what the enemy could have done, and how we stopped it? Jesus a lot of you back-seat drivers talk a lot of smack but you don't have a fucking clue about how shit really goes down. It's like listening to a twelve year old boy whose balls just dropped telling Hugh Hefner how to fuck. :jayzus:

Of course not, and it's not up to me to judge that. It is up to Congress, though, according to your Constitution, which is why they have the gang of eight. If not Congress, then who in your opinion should make that judgement, and why do you hate the US Constitution so much?

    One correction:
12/2019 US carried out military strikes on five sites in Iraq and Syria claimed to be linked to the Iranian-backed militia that was responsible for the rocket attack that killed the American contractor

US retaliation - Cyber attacks and new sanctions.

    US retaliation - new sanctions

:wtf: US retaliation - missile strikes against Soleimani's Iran backed militias in Iraq and Syria.

How were the Dems pro war at every step? Syria?
