I'd just like to point out that nowhere did I say that the American left was communism. What Americans think of as the left is actually a statist authoritarian philosophy that would have Big Mommy Government in charge of everything, with "the right people" running it of course, so that it could "take care of " us.
I feel like I'm pretty far to the left, and I don't want the government to be my mommy or take care of me. I just want my tax dollars used to fund programs that uplift and help people. I want a government that regulates business so that the profit motive doesn't lead to people being treated like they're disposable. The government should be by, for, and of the people as a whole--not just for the rich and the corporations. People should matter a whole hell of a lot more than money.
I find it quite illuminating that the only one who ever posted here who had the guts to come right out and say "Devil take the hindmost", was Storm Rucker, and he's full swastika-kissing Fash now.
Does the Postal Service "take care" of you? How about the Police? The Armed Forces? Perhaps the local town planners? Who plans the roads?
It's a mutual thing. Could be called collectivist, could be called having a society, or even teamwork. It's all a matter of perspective. Also more than two political parties is great for nuance.....
No matter how many times you ask them that, you'll never get a clear answer. Obviously to them those things are what they want, so they don't count as being "taken care of."
It's usually that those are "legitimate functions of government" or just "constitutional". The fact that neither answer actually addresses the fact that as public services investment in them is left leaning policy making never comes up. Yup something can be constitutional AND socialist. Let's overplay my hand a wee bit and do that "We, the people" thing one more time. Could the English language actually support a more collectivist phrase than that?
We've people right here on Wordforge who have advocated for things like forcing everyone to live in high-density urban housing because it's "more efficient," curtailing freedoms of expression and self-defense, government-provided (meaning government controlled) healthcare, changing the electoral process so that their preferred party always wins . . . come on, there's more to it than "Muh roads!"
Funny coming from you, Dicky, given that you're one of the peeps advocating for eliminating speech you disagree with.
The phrase is historically interesting, in that it's the first line of the Preamble to the Constitution, which was written by Gouverneur Morris, a NYer () from a propertied family and an outspoken abolitionist. The question becomes: To which "people" was he referring? Wealthy landowning males, who were the only ones permitted to vote until 1792-1856 (the right was determined by individual state, North Carolina - surprise, surprise - being the last to relent on the property requirement)? Americans have a knack overcomplicating important stuff.
And yet its you with the more crowded cities compared to Europe, police violently curbing protests, underperforming by a mile on corona virus compared to socialised healthcare systems and having a political party put up their own ballot boxes. Go figure. Those services I mentioned are public services in the US and elsewhere. They are already in play and efforts to cut them (as in "make more efficient" are universally hallmarks of the right not the left. It isn't a left wing government which has slashed funding for the NHS here, or brought in universal payments, because reducing their footprint (and outlay) is conservative thinking. Nonetheless those services represent elements of socialism embedded in the very fabric of your (and our) society, whether you choose that terminology or not. You literally couldn't function without them. They do, in fact, take care of you.
Possibly my favorite thing about WF is watching non-Americans school Americans on How Successful Western Governments Are a Blend of Capitalism and Socialism.
They don't have neo-Nazis on the news to give the "counter-argument", for holocaust remembrance day. They don't have Satanists on for Christmas. They don't have the Grand Wizard of the Klan on for Martin Luther King day. There's already gatekeeping in our culture that we all agree to. The fashys can all go to Bitchute and Parlor to spread their shit. They can't have the mainstream anymore. Fuck 'em. Trumpism's killed a quarter million people. They had their time in the sun. They blew it.
Considering that this thread is basically... Lanz: Here's what the left wants. Left Posters: No we don't. Lanz: Yes you do. ...I'd suggest maybe it's you not paying attention.
He's referring to @Ancalagon, who believes King County, WA is the center of the universe. Anc by no means represents anyone but himself.
Who? I mean, I live in the centre of a major city and I'm pretty anti densification. that's quite the spectrum, but as an advocate of the right to defend one's self, I don't believe that the options should be lethal or nothing. Take a krav maga class or something. , utter fabrication... the argument is against parasitic insurance inflating the cost of health care delivery. because hey, why should the will of the majority matter in a democracy? seems to me you're for the status quo because it gives an advantage to your preferred party/demographic. so yeah... we're back to that whole "truth" thing (and your Daytonesque aversion to it)
I assumed he was talking about @Amaris aka The Poster Former Known as John Specifically, she identifies as an anarcho-communist but she's been the only true commie I could recall.
Hell, even our politicians who call themselves socialists really just want a market economy with somewhat more regulation and a more robust safety net.
Correction: Changing the electoral process so that the party with the most votes always wins. The fact that you automatically jump to the conclusion that this means your party would never win is ... revealing.
Vox always makes a good argument. https://www.vox.com/21142223/electoral-college-2020-election-jesse-wegman
