That whole thread on Clyde vs. El Chup in the Help Desk got me thinking about what I'd do if for some reason, Lanzman got sick of our shit and wanted to sell the board and someone else bought it. This is a suggestion I'd throw into the mix for changes. The idea is if the membership really think one decision is really boneheaded, that they can take up a matter in a "Supreme Court" where the 7 judges would make decisions based on how they wanted WF to be run and the culture we want to promote at this place. Who would you nominate to sit on Wordforge's "Supreme Court"?
How many nominees do we each get? Here is a list of seven I think would be decent: Dan Leach Space Turkey Chuck Aurora Elwood Evenflow shootER
Sounds like a good list of mods, which is really what this would be, just all the mods having to make a judgement. I do think getting some new mods would be a good idea when we have our leadership change.
I think the membership is pretty good at letting everyone know when something displeases them. Every BBS I've seen that does these odd judicial schemes end up embroiled in a world of shit. Plus, there is hardly ever a problem here, and because it's rare every small thing is blown into larger proportions. Big changes haven't been made because most people want WF left alone at this point aside from a few vocal people. Yeah, we've had some technical issues and our Tech guy hasn't been around a lot. That happens sometimes when people have lives. For the most part the mods stay out of your way. Essentially posters who do a few extra things. What more is it that you want the staff to do that isn't being done now? Or do you just want change for change's sake?
There are a couple of staff members who consistently take on a bit more than the duties you've described Tamar. I recognize people have to make judgement calls and inevitably a bad decision will happen now and then. And we have a good mechanism for exposing these decisions in the Helpdesk. But it is frustrating when a few people often make bad decisions and then ridicule detractors. Mods are human, they make mistakes, that's okay. Some seem to think that they are above such possibilities. And lest somebody claim there's a shit storm about every mod action, they are quite wrong. Many of us have received warnings for things like flaming in the wrong room and quietly accepted it, because we knew it to be true. Or we knew it to be close enough that it wasn't worth arguing. It's only the bonehead mistakes that lead to a ruckus. If we occasionally rotated staff, we'd be less likely to reach that level of frustration. I can see, though, that the administration isn't too interested by the idea, because it has been suggested frequently and just as frequently brushed off. Maybe somebody can explain why mod rotation is a bad idea.
Because if you do it too fast, they barf, and if you do it for too long, they fall over when you stop and then can't get up for like an hour.
Remember how only minority wanted Rep to change, but once it was implemented and it was seen as better than the old system by wide margins people voted (and voted again, and again, and again) to keep nuRep. How many people have been bitching and moaning about bringing the Iron Room back? Or the Gray Room? People are change adverse. Oftentimes you have to try something out before you can make a judgement. Yeah except for it's been a fucking year. And I don't mean a year since I started suggesting it, I mean a fucking year since our do-nothing owner himself said it was time for an upgrade and he would look into it. Actually now that I look it up, it's only been 11 months: http://www.wordforge.net/showthread.php?t=95482 I don't know what about all the stuff you and $corp were going to try out to boost membership when Lanz ran off?
Right now, Wordforge has the most members it will ever have. The same will be said every day after this one.
Regarding increasing membership, I've been putting that on hold due to our server issues. I believe that if we were going to go into this full-bore, we can't have the server crashing and WF just not working. It would kill any momentum we have if new members came in here and couldn't post due to another database error. Lanzman was looking into upgrading the board software and I was kinda waiting for that to be sorted out before starting the next phase.
First, I would choose myself. Then I would choose: Ten Lubak, because like me, his morals are flexible, he can be bought depending upon the surrounding circumstance, and he believes that there's nothing copious amounts of alcohol, and a good orgy, can't fix. Ancalagon, because he's a war veteran, so that when our court is rocked with scandal after scandal, we'll just parade him around to the media in order to regain our credibility. I see no reason why this will not work. Mewa. With a black guy on our side, we're invincible against threats of racism. The other slots will be open on a need to know basis, and by that, I mean we will need to know what your boobies look like.
Of course, because it's one of the few places you get to troll your shit around without getting banned.
