It's just bellyachin'. The left talked about secession after one of Bush's wins, too. It won't come to anything. Yet.
After perusing the petitions, it looks like it's just a contest on which issues will get a boilerplate response featured on the website that are similar to the return correspondence of most politicians.
Tsk. Alec Baldwin's ass may be as wide as Texas, but he's not a state. And I don't recall any left-leaning organizations gathering signatures.
Did anyone actually file petitions to secede in 2000 or 2004? Did any of those petitions gather 10,000 signatures? Cause I don't remember hearing about those sorts of things.
To be clear, this petition process is not an actual method for seceding, which isn't actually legal. [edit] That's meant to say illegal, but leaving it as originally posted, seeing as how it was repped for the typo.
I don't know if anyone gathered signatures, but, yes, there were some of the left grumbling about secession. Here's a bit of an article from 2007... Just as now, it won't amount to anything.
Sounds good. We get to burn Atlanta again. And there will be less butthurt cuz the war will have nothing to do with slavery.
Someone in a magazine no one ever heard of saying without evidence that once upon a time liberals talked about secession isn't the same thing as tens of thousands of conservatives signing petitions for secession.
In any case, Muad will not be participating. He's still recovering from his wounds in the Battle of the Rep.
"WAAAAAAAA! WE LOST!!!!!! I'M TAKING MY MARBLES AND GOING HOME!!!!!!!!!" As usual the butt hurt is strong with the Republicans.
And it's shit like this that makes me think you're an Oreo. Burn Atlanta? Have you been there since the last time it was burned down?
I don't know if there actually is a legal method for seceding. I'm sure if there was actual interest in seceding, the lack of a particular website would not have stopped it. There were websites where people could put together petitions for just about anything and everything. I seem to remember e-petitions to save Enterprise around then, for example. Especially without links to the actual statements or columns, I would be suspicious. Here, though, is an 2004 article from the Washington Times that refers to liberals talking about secession. And by "liberals," I mean "Lawrence O'Donnell, Bob Beckel and anonymous Internet posters." And by "talking about secession," I mean "joking about it or talking about how the red states are takers rather than makers rather than legitimately saying, 'The blue states should secede and I want to actually get the ball rolling in any way, shape or form.'" I assume that this Orion Magazine leaned on this or a similar piece for its research. I have highlighted part for emphasis: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2004/nov/9/20041109-122753-5113r/?page=all
It's small potatoes either way. But if you want documentary evidence some small piece of the left talked about secession (just as some small piece of the right is doing now), I just provided it. Well, I only posted that link to show that there were rumblings by the left around that time. If I hadn't posted something, I'd have gotten "Link?" up the wazoo. I'm not interested in convincing you, but I have shown that an article written FIVE YEARS AGO documented that there WERE secessionist rumblings by the left around the 2004 election. So, I didn't just make up the idea today. Just because YOU don't remember it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.
So it was made up 5 years ago? I'm still not seeing the evidence, other than this blog making an unsubstantiated claim. I would be interested in reading a quote, for instance, or an article from a professional news source. The only 'rumblings' I remember were Democrats promising to move to Canada if Bush was reelected, hardly a secessionist movement. And because you can't back up your claim with evidence, it means it did happen?
I did. I gave you an article from years ago that mentions what I said I'd remembered. To settle the matter, here's a contemporaneous Washington Times article that fully proves what I've claimed: "Blue States Buzz over Secession" Now, you should be graceful and acknowledge that I've proven it.
Are you kidding? I remember people being nearly suicidal when Bush won a 2nd term. Drama queens are everywhere.
Thank you, was that so hard? It even informed me of this little bit of trivia: Indeed it shouldn't be all that surprising that a country based on seceding from another country would have the topic of secession come up from time to time. Though, I take issue with the article claiming that the Jesusland map should be considered as secessionist.
I find it depressing that a man i respect as much as Moynihan ever employed one I have so little use for as O'Donnell
