Guy: Why a toothbrush, uncle? Sherriff of Nottingham: Because its dull, you nitwit. *blank stare* IT WOULD HURT MORE! Guy, wanders off, muttering under his breath: Glad I didn't ask why a moose.
That claim smells suspiciously to me like the "47%" claim Romney was repeating that the Republicans love so much. it's not remotely as cut and dried as all that for several reasons - but i don't have time for details right now.
We should encourage Texas to secede. Then we can sit back and watch their interstates and freight lines fall into disrepair, long-haul truckers go around to avoid border hassles, out-of-state suppliers refuse orders because shipping companies like FedEx charge international rates. They'll need to set up their own military, postal service, etc. U.S. military bases and their revenues will disappear, and so on. Within a decade, Mexico will move in and reclaim Texas, then move on to claim the rest of the territory they lost in 1848. LizK's photo ID will be in Spanish.
People really do go overboard with this shit. If they don't like it Jet Blue is offering free one way flights out of the country. Don't let the door hit them on the way out. :whine:
So we've got one thread talking about how certain states are about to be the new Saudi Arabia, and another thread ridiculing those very states for joking about secession. Ain't nothin like a redneck with money.
BTW California doesn't even frak for oil or gas and most off shore is illegal (since the mid 1970's) yet we're still #3 on the list. Of course, the big problem isn't environmentalists here but NIMBYs. On land it is farmers who are afraid frakking will poison their well water (and that can happen) while off shore it is the folks in the $10 million beach houses who are afraid their views will be impacted and so the value of their houses will go down. On the upside, if we actually removed the state's off shore drilling ban and allowed frakking I'm willing to bet we'd produce more oil and gas than Texas. I mean we're already #3 even with these rules.
I think Cali should secede first. And as for all that talk about how much they pay in versus how much they get back? So much the better for Cali- maybe they could balance their budget, finally. Then there really would be no more illegal immigrants, they could give them all drivers' licenses, let them vote, and Cali could become the next great socialist experiment!! (Even moreso than the extent that it already is)
I'd prefer it if Cali split into two states. The Northern half is a lot more liberal than SoCal, especially when you consider that San Diego is the second-largest naval base in the country. I wounder how the electoral college would be affected then.
Not going to happen. BTW San Diego routinely runs blue as a county and the city is just about always blue. The only sure fire red county in Southern California these days is Orange county. BTW we have the majority of the people in the southern part of the state and we like using the north as our resource areas/water bitches. We take the water from the north and move it south via aqueducts and we're certainly not going to vote to let our water end up in some other state. We like that every time the question comes up we can have a nice fair state wide vote and since we have most of the people we always win. Democracy in action! :carve2:
Southern California would be a very blue state, even if San Diego were red. L.A. Is so much bigger than everything else, it would completely dominate the politics. Splitting in to two would just mean two more blue EC votes, two more Democratic senators. Not a bad idea, except for the water fight it would create.
It wouldn't just be Texas leaving. If Texas leaves I can see several other states going with it. And Mexico is in no position to invade anything.
Damn liberals always wanting to break the law. You can't strip someone of citizenship by executive order.
Well if they actually secede from the union they are voluntarily giving up those rights. Not like this will ever happen to begin with. No state is going to secede from the union. These whiners need to realize that not all elections can go their way, suck it up and move on with their lives.
Yet. Give a legal advisor time to make the argument that it will make the "ordering execution by executive order" thing easier.
You can't secede through a petition to the Executive either. I may be going out on a limb here, but maybe that was the underlying point of the 'damn liberals' petition... LOL.
There is no reason former states couldn't or wouldn't have strong and healthy trading relationships. I can see friction over water in some places but that is about it. But we'd be looking at smaller, more localized governments dealing the business of constituencies with common roots and problems.
