No, there is not. JavaScript could only be enabled if HTML were allowed, and it isn't as it could be used to break a page or even hack the board.

AlphaMan and Rinceweind have had at times signatures that appeared to be dynamic (though perhaps they were merely frequently updated). Ask them. Whatever they're doing is the limit of what can be done, AFAIK.

John Castle has had one that counts cigarette free days. I suspect they all work by Pilkington an image that is created and modified by the hosting site.

We really need to limit sig size, officially.

Chad's is ridiculous..if he still has it...I blocked it because it was so annoying.

I don't care about the 'bling' aspect, it's the stretching the page horizontally and the 20 freaking lines of text that annoy the shit out of me.

I notice with some relief that the trend in hyperactive animated avatars seems to have run its course. :garamet:

Don't know about what rules should be put in place, but my personal preference would be:

    1) Nothing but text and links in sigs. I could also get along with smilies that are no larger in height than twice a line of text, and a strict limit on how many of them you can have in there.

    2) Maximum three or four lines, including blank lines.

Pages get long enough with quotes of quotes of quotes in various discussions. Having to skip over sigs, huge animated gifs and other such nonsense is very distracting.

As I said, I'm not saying this should be the new rule. But it's what I'd love to see.

There has to be a hack out there that will only automatically nest two posts in quotes.

If people want to have more than two posts quoted, they would be able to do so (although now that Uncle Albert is gone, what's the point?) but people can shoot off a quick response without having to go and trim in order to not be a dick (especially annoying to those of us that are on mobile most of the time).

Yeah and that crap is pissing me off too.

Can't people edit? I do. I cut out any unnecessary parts of a quote.

I usually do that if I'm on my phone or a computer. But for some reason, it's a much bigger PIA on my tablet. Even then, I still try to edit it down.

I don't mind that one. Not objecting to animation per se, just the rapid, strobing, migraine-inducing ones. Don't see any of those currently.

Of course, it's also possible to turn off sigs and avatars. Self-help instead of nannyism, IMO.

Too big. That busts my screen. Make it 600 or 500 width.

I've turned off all signatures, though that's not the best solution for most people.

I don't think we need a hard limit, just something at the staff's discretion. If it's too big or too many people are complaining about it (for legitimate reasons) then that person should get asked to trim it to a reasonable size.

    Don't need a hack. That's a setting. Currently at 10, IIRC.

I think they're probably using an image that's being modified by a PHP or similar script being hosted externally. Kinda like those sig banners that display the viewer's IP to them.

I think it comes down to what resolution everyone is using, because it doesn't look that bad on my screen--only goes about 1/3 of the way across my post. I'll take it down for now, and trim the size down if I get a chance. Sorry if it was too big, I had no idea people had problems with it because I was only getting positive feedback.

We don't really need a hard limit for signature sizes, it should just come down to staff discretion. If it's unreasonably large, ask the poster to take it down and/or make it smaller. If they don't comply, just remove it in the Admin CP or whatever. If they keep using a stupidly large signature image, warn them and take away their signature privileges.

And for me, it only takes up about half of the length of the table that Tamar's post was in. Can you up your resolution at all, or are you at the max?`
