Goodbye you arrogant assholes at the employment bureau, goodbye writing applications and getting letters of refusal, goodbye world of unemployment! Ok, it's just my old job which I had last year, but they liked me there and took me back, even though they know I that have some serious health problems. I only got unemployed because I got even more ill. But now I feel better and they have confidence in me! Great people there!
It's a job many of you would consider "shitty". I will be a carer for the elderly again. But because so few people want to do a job which has not much prestige, there is a heavy demand for people who are brave enough to do this work. And because of it, it is extremely well-paid! At least around these parts. Win! Caring for the elderly is nothing for cowards! And as Ted Nugent said: "There are no bad jobs!" Everything is better than being unemployed. And some old people have a lot to tell...
Caring for the elderly is an extremely noble job, IMO. All of us will either become elderly, or die before we get that chance. There is absolutely no reason to look down on those who care for the elderly. Sure, it's nice that it's well paid, but it would be a "good" job even if it wasn't.
Jan, at one point in my life I was a CNA in a nursing home - a nurses assistant. I had to do a lot of heavy lifting, wipe a lot of rear ends, and turn people who couldn't do it themselves. Most of the time it is very unpleasant work - work that has to be done. The dementia patients were very trying, but there were very rewarding times. Those few minutes (or moments, or hours) they came back to earth, and they knew what you were doing for them. And then there was that old guy with Parkinson's we had to turn and clean every night who always punched whoever did the turning in the nose. We changed methods in case we were hurting him. *punch* We tried so many different things. So many people got punched in the face. 'Twould have been illegal to restrain him.
You're only talking like this because you are such and old dude already and you hope that you will be taken good care of in a home of the aged soon! To be serious: There were some horrible incidents in old people's homes lately here in Switzerland. Old people deserve respect! Abusive nurses for the elderly should be shot. I know from experience that it takes a lot of nerves dealing with old people sometimes, but when one abuses them, he/she should not only be fired, but punished with a prison senctence.
Jobs make you feel useful. Even my shit job at McDonald's wayyyy back when made me feel useful. Grats on the re-hiring.
My grandmother did it for years until she needed someone to help her out. Noble work if you ask me. Congrats!
It's often a thankless job but it's also a much needed job. And not anyone can do it, so all the more power to you!
My mom was a home aid for almost twenty years, going around to old people's homes to help them cook and clean and take care of themselves and like that. It's good, honest work.
You must have had very unthankful jobs in the past. Other than that, I can't explain your post above. It's not only about the money. The salary is just a part of it. It's the good feeling when you come home after a hard days' work and you feel tired. It's hard to explain... Of course, it helps a lot if you have nice co-workers and a boss who respects you. When you have been bullied and your boss has been is an asshole, I can understand your attidude. But only then! I was unemployed for many months know, only helping out here and there. It was a godawful time. Having been ill and not being able to work on a regular basis for medical reasons did not compensate for the feeling to be a worthless waste of life and air.
That's what I meant when I said 'fun'. It makes my free time more valuable and I spend it better plus I actually have money to do things.
Correct! And when one is unemployed for a long time, one gets awfully lazy and is unable to do the most simple things. Keeping your flat clean for example, or shaving. It's a state of decay. It's not even fun anymore to have a drink in a bar in the evening. Because you can go to the bar in the afternoon already! It MIGHT be enjoyable for a month or so, but after that, you have too much time on your hands and you become weird and you start to do strange things. (Boozing, for example, or eating junk food the whole day and getting fat, or spamming on the internet! ) You can lie to yourself and say "Hey, it's all not that bad", but this is purely self-deception.
Having work to do makes you feel productive; like you're giving society some value. I try to remember that when a customer is frustrating me.
Ahh,that's what it was... Dunno if it's the whole state, or the whole country, or just a weird run of Vegas luck....
This isn't a troll: You probably feel like your work was menial because you don't come anywhere close to using your potential. Also, it appears you have serious self-worth and self-confidence issues. The good news is that nothing I mentioned is insurmountable.
You may be similar to a friend of mine - he doesn't really like people he works with, and doesn't make any effort with them on their terms. So has an unhappy job. Me? I'll share a joke with the biggest cunt in the office if it'll lighten my day up. Some of us don't connect to well with the more regular folk, the trick is to appear to...
Diacanu: Just don't give up because of bad experiences in the past. You are good at writing, no doubt about that. And inventive. Don't listen to the guys here who goof on you. What about finding an internship at a local newspaper? Or working as a freelancer and trying to sell your articles to newspapers and magazines? I know this will not earn you enough money to make a living. But trust me, seeing an article you've written in a newspaper will boost your self-confidence! I've experienced this before. The advantage of working as a freelancer is that you do not have to deal with all this shit which happens in an editorial office. (the rat race) I know the atmosphere in such places can be horrible, I worked as a journalist for a local newspaper myself. Perhaps you can only sell one out of five articles you write, but it's worth the trouble. And you can choose your topics yourself. And money doesn't seem to be your problem. What do you have to lose? Don't waste your talents! Good luck!
