Hmm. I'm impressed. That was one of the better episodes of pre-S4 Enterprise. I'd never seen it, and wanted to see how they led into the whole S3 Xindi arc. Of course, it would have been a lot better without the Klingon bullshit used as filler, especially the Duros. Jeez, were there any other Klingon 'bad guys' between then and the 24th Century? One thing I did like was the way there were suddenly some Earth ships around to help out when the Enterprise needed them. It was cool seeing our heroes not have to go it totally alone for a change. But where were those ships when the probe showed up? Liked the Earth revisit, the solemnity in the wake of the attack, and seeing Columbia under construction. Did not like 'photonic' torpedoes. C'mon, guys, how about a weapons upgrade that doesn't put us right back in TOS/TNG territory? That and the TCW stuff. Even with the good stuff, this episode just highlighted the creative bankruptcy of the 2 B's and their inability to think past what they had done before. Anyhoo, I plan to watch the first couple Eps of S3 and then revisit S4, skipping the 'alien-nazi' eps.
Why oh why they decided to go with alien nazis instead of ANYTHING else, is beyond me. They could have had the Boxians from planet Cardboard III and it would have made for a better storyline, or at least one that hadn't been visited 1600 times.
Wow, that's the only season three episode I have yet to see, the first time it aired, I just plain got board after five minutes, the second time it aired, I think I had a band concert and forgot to tape it, and the third tiem it aired was immediately after seaseon three ended and the power in my house went off FVIE MINUTES before it aired I've been searching all over for this episode posted somewhere online, but no luck.
^ Whoops, I totally forgot it was season two I only watched that one once. I was thinking about "the Xindi."
That was clearly a little trickery from Braga when they removed him from the writing staff. Scorched earth. Very professional
I never had any particular "trouble" with any of the ENT episodes...I rather liked the show, really. I do realize it wasn't "up to the standards" of some, but I was entertained...all I ever ask of any media.
For me the cast more than the writing was what put me off. I hated all of them except the brilliant guy who played Dr Phlox and the guy who played Trip (who was on and off good) -tpaul, reed, token black guy and godawful talentless wooden archer were just terrible
The guy who played Archer's NX test rival, Robinson. That guy was more a captain in that one episode than Archer came across as one most of the time.
The choice of actors was fine. The design of the ship was fine. Some decent fucking writing would've redeemed the whole package, and on the rare occasions when they had that, it was watchable. Enjoyable, even.
No, what am I thinking? Ironsides is cool, but he's cursed to be jumping shark bait. Enterprise would've been fighting King Neptune by the 4th episode.
got to disagree with the casting of archer, bakula was too much of a wet blanket, and i remain unconvinced he can act a badass - whenever we saw angry archer, it was like watching a poodle yip.
he's supposed to be a captain exploring the wild and dangerous final frontier, not a therapist boldly taking group hug therapy where its never been before.
yeah, but this is scott bakula, acting anything other than a gelded whelp highlights why his acting chops have kept in the realm of b-movies and the dingleberries of sci-fi franchises. he's a great sam beckett, but watching him try anything else is almost as painful as rubbing a porcupine on your piles.
OK, so Captain Sam Beckett it is. Compassionate. Followed his conscience. Cautious, analytical and introspective, but decisive when he needed to be. Clever solutions rather than direct violence whenever possible. A superhuman aptitude for science. Nope. Can't envision that in a Starfleet uniform.....
a great science officer, i would agree, crappy captain though. you want a strong, capable leader - not someone who the klingons would blow out of the sky midway through a platitude.
I think the idea was this captain wasn't Kirk, and had to find his own stamp on the position. That I have no problem with. I actually enjoyed Archer when they gave him a decent script. The role of explorer and mediator was the perfect one for the Starfleet of that period. If they had gotten more done with the creation of the Federation arc I think we would have seen that in a better light. The only problem with Enterprise was the subpar writing, and the fact people were tired of Trek after 4 series in twenty years. The casual fan didn't watch any more. After the 4th season I was really excited about Enterprise - personally I think that was the single best season of any Trek period. So naturally, that's when they cancelled it. If it had been that quality from the beginning, Enterprise would still be on the air.
