damn I hope you're not punching anyone in the head or face! You can fuck your hands up! :nono: That's why boxing gloves were invented - bare knuckle boxing didn't have any guys getting knocked out or beaten bloody. Once gloves were invented they could throw hay-makers without fucking up their hands (and taping up their hands to keep the hand/finger bones from spreading upon impact) and the crowd loved it! The days of being cautious about throwing punches were over - the end of an era.

But wait! Regulated, official, legal, sanctioned bare knuckle boxing is back in the USA! :techman: They had an event in Montana a few months ago - the first in about 100 years since the long-john wearing handle-bar mustache bare-knuckle days! They had a couple more since, but interest isn't that great. A lot of the fighters are washed up MMA fighters. :( It's kind of pathetic really - like watching drunken uncles fight. :(

A palm strike is much more effective than a punch, and much less damaging to your hand.

actually, considering the number of people who harm themselves or innocent victims with guns in the US every year as opposed to the number that actually defend themselves successfully with a gun it is pretty obvious the risk of owning one far outweigh the risk of not having one if you ever need to. That is the same dumbass type of argument people who don't wear their seatbelt because they might get trapped in the car and die because of it use.

Sometimes you don’t get that choice. Forbin might look like an easy target since he’s walking around with a cane.

    ;)

He only speaks for himself and at that he does a bad job.

No one can guarantee they won’t miss, anything can happen after all, but I guarantee that I’ll won’t be shooting around you because I’m too hyped up. I’ll be hitting you multiple times.

Oh I just remembered this, what with all the talk about adrenaline/stress and missing targets:
the absolutely WORST shooting I ever saw was that gay dude on my crew I mentioned in a previous post. You know, the nice guy who was just...not...cut out to be a soldier.
On one epically bad (for him) day at the range his failing scores kept getting worse & worse. Dude went through a few hundred rounds but he could get get the minimum number of rounds (26 out of 40 or whatever it was) per timed period to qualify. I stood behind him for a while during one of his last attempts and heard him mumbling, talking to himself. Okay we all saw Full Metal Jacket and stressed out people with guns talking to themselves rarely ends well.

So I asked him who he was talking to and he said "angels." Yep - he was praying for the angels to guide his bullets to the targets. Spoiler alert - the angels must have had the day off or something because his "go to" strategy was just not working out. :( Suffice it to say we ran out of daylight and he never qualified. He did a "piggy-back" with another unit a couple of weeks later who was going to the range and he came back qualified. Did that unit "pencil whip" his score? Most likely yes! They probably realized he would never pass within their lifetimes so they gave him a passing score anyway. This was not unheard of by any means BTW as scary as that sounds - it's all about those unit statistics & ratings so cheating is widespread.

I always found target shooting in the beginning to be a bit awkward. Granted I have never been under the adrenaline of real fire, but in the middle of things whizzing all around on the paintball field I could easily choose areas of the body to shoot. It was like getting in a focused zone where everything just sort of worked together and I could just feel where to shoot. As time went on and I got more used to the adrenaline it became easier and easier. It took longer to actually get target shooting down. It was really strange to be able to chose a painless point to shoot someone like a foot or ammo pod from a distance while running and them squirming, but not with an easier shot at the range with everything being still.

I know it is not the same as shooting a gun, or being in real combat, but there are similarities to the mental coordination of the actions.

I've spent hundreds and hundreds of hours of my life on the training range with live ammo and simulators. I've also been in situations where adrenaline kicks in, time seems to slow down, tunnel vision goes into effect, your fine motor skills go into the toilet, and the fight or flight response becomes tangible. The former will help prepare you for the latter, but it will never really simulate the latter.

There was a point, a decade ago, where I could pop helium filled balloons with a .308 Winchester bolt action rifle at 1,000 yards. Parlor tricks are fun, but it's a whole different ball game when it's a real armed person moving in three dimensions rather than a static balloon.

The reality of the fact is that in a real situation of danger and adrenaline you don't know how the aspect of immediate death or dismemberment will hit you. Still, decent simulation does give you a chance to learn how to focus and deal with the effects. It is sort of like the learning curve for a powerful drug. As you get used to the altered perceptions your mind begins to be able to process them without resorting to complete gibberish. It also raises your awareness of the effects so you can consciously recognize them better.

There are reasons why training simulation for high stress operations incorporate a lot of different extreme methods of pulling you out of your comfort zone and placing you in a hostile as possible environment. I cannot rightfully say how I would react with bombs and bullets around me, but I can say there is a much higher probability that calm and focus kick in if the situation erupts. That is why I am very critical of the weekend warrior who really has not stressed themselves at all thinking they will react properly like they did on the target range last weekend. There is a big difference between firing your gun at some targets in a relaxed and safe atmosphere and doing it under fire. Just things like reacting to the safety being on or a jam are totally different when your mind is racing.

agree! Moving targets is where the rubber meets the road. In the army when we qualified for record score our furthest "pop up" targets were 300 meters and they stayed up for quite a while before the timer dropped them back down. Even with iron sights it's not that difficult hitting a human sized target when you know about where it's going to pop up, and it's not shooting back.

But some army ranges had actual moving targets - I never got to shoot at any of these, but would have loved to. I think my son did at Fort Benning, but I'm not sure. I did paintball a couple of times and it was very education & productive - great training no doubt about it.

about "weekend warriors" who are really into thinking their skills may be called upon to save the world for democracy: give up the dream buddy.
Granted I do not consider guys who just like to modify/shoot guns for fun "weekend warriors". They have no delusions of grandeur.

But the dudes who wear all the tactical gear and set up training scenarios/camps and take themselves way too seriously are  to the extreme. I never researched it that thoroughly (just saw a couple of documentaries) but I'd be willing to bet most of them have no military experience, and most likely no combat experience. It's not just about the guns - it's about all the things you need to deal with before you get to shoot the guns:
being sleep deprived, being hungry, possibly being sick or injured, being in good physical condition (strength & endurance) to begin with, being cold/wet/hot etc. etc. etc. You better be "the total package" or you are useless.

No I wasn't, I was pointing to the evidence that guns don't make you any safer.

There are ways to scale that down to the dynamics of an individual encounter but the point stands gun ownership has had over two centuries to prove itself as a means of reducing crime and consistently failed spectacularly.

Dude. Please tell me this is just smokescreen on the extremely rare chance someone questions you--or it's because you have to take polygraphs for work.

Don't you have, like, an entire basement full of boxes of models? Stick your "illegal" magazines in an old model box with some sprues and other stuff to rattle around. Shit, shrink wrap it if you need to. Bury it under all the other models. Easy peasy.

Saw that. Makes me wonder if Forbin’s opening post was the equivalent of the famous unfortunate boating accident.

Also, Spaceturkey is stupid. The adrenaline issue has been explained to him. He doesn’t want to get it. So I made it waaaaaaay plainer. He still doesn’t want to get it.

I’ve cleared leather once and it ended things. Never had to fire a shot in self-defense. I’ve been in an office building that had four intruders in it, the police responded in about ten minutes, and I was waiting behind the door to my suite.

Adrenaline kicked in both times, though the pull was the greatest. I’m confident I can place targets center mass.

I also know that a lot of police and self-defense shooting analysis shows all that can go out the window in a second.

Just to reiterate, Spaceturkey is stupid.

It will be an additional charge to others. Not to mention if some idiot is bragging on the internet they have one they open themselves up to a warrant search. If a person is acting legally this should not be a problem. Don't think the police wont use it for other reasons either.

Let us say we have some woman who is abused and she knows he has these she can get his house searched and him stripped of his weapons by getting him convicted of a felony if he is not careful.

I think the law makes an interesting tool to keep owners of these items on the straight and narrow. If you go out and make an ass out of yourself you set yourself up for a conviction. If you are cool and behaved then the police will never know.

Personally I'm an excellent driver! I know, Rain Man said that too. :( Seriously, I'll stack my defensive driving & fast responses against anybody's.
Sadly I'm not the only driver on the road - if they stayed home my time spent driving would be much safer.

I have zero scientific proof but lately I've noticed that the most aggressive, dangerous drivers :shakefist: are the ones with the bigger, newer pickup trucks. :brood: They spent all that money so they have the right to drive like Mr. Magoo? FUCK THAT!

Well, when you are collecting ways to kill people more efficiently perhaps it is the nature of your hobby that causes your problem. I am pretty sure you would not have such problems if you chose something that had more of a purpose than easily killing people, and possibly gave something artistic to the community. Speaking of killing people don't you consume illicit drugs from time-to-time Tererun? Here is my point: somewhere in the long convoluted chain of growing/producing/manufacturing the drugs to distributing the drugs to selling the drugs to you consuming the drugs, at least a few people were carrying/using guns to protect themselves from other drug dealers or robbers who know they are handling large amounts of cash. Thus you are an enabler of potential gun violence by keeping the often armed drug dealers in business, and a hypocrite for accusing Forbin for having a hobby that involves guns - guns that will never be in criminal hands unless they are stolen.

Please feel free to embarrass yourself by saying that nobody in the illicit drug trade ever carries or uses guns because every American on wordforge knows better. Nearly every fucking time there's a big drug bust guns are found too. Are all these lovely people going target shooting on their down time? I would say probably not.

That said I'm all for legalizing all drugs! If you want to put dangerous shit of questionable toxicity into your body be my guest. It's just pathetic that you are such a hypocrite concerning guns & gun violence. Odds are when somebody is murdered in your town the victim or suspect at some point might have very well made it possible for you get your kicks. Nice fucking hobby you have there Tererun! :jayzus:

Guns are for making killing easier. Drugs have more purpose than guns ever will. Nice try with a shitty attempt to point fingers at others but my point still stands that when you collect deadly weapons which have no other purpose but killing the nature of your problem where people look at you like a violent asshole who needs supervision is your nature.

So Forbin needs supervision (because he has guns) but drug dealers (who are by the default of dealing drugs are criminals and criminals by nature have no reservations about further law breaking) get a pass in your world because you need their services on a regular basis. Pound-for-pound you are still the bigger enabler and a hypocrite as well unless you can vet your drug dealers and thus confirm they can legally possess guns. The state of New Jersey vets Forbin - yet you don't give a shit if the illegal drug trade staff carry and at some point will likely use their guns for criminal intent. Fuck man......your moral compass must have taken a bullet or two because it's destroyed. :(

Yes, Forbin should be watched because he collects deadly weapons. If you want to talk about drug use please do start another topic. I am not going to pretend guns are safe because people use drugs, which is your mentally deficient point. Your attempt to point fingers at others is just ignoring the reasons why people should watch gun owners.

However, just to double tap your idiotic idea please do go back to any of my support posts for drug use to find that yes I think there is a reason to watch out for people who use drugs and to consider an altered state one which you should take some extra precautions in, and that law enforcement should not be allowing regular activities like driving while intoxicated. We can watch for both, you fucking moron, just like we should start watching out for elderly people who need us to, like yourself.
