There's no way in hades you'd catch me cheering for Qaddafi, that's for sure. I'm just not sure we vetted his opponents too thoroughly.
Trust you to draw that conclusion. (A) Libya sells primarily to Europe, and very little to the U.S. (B) You're understandably terrified at the possibility of another Muslim nation aspiring toward democracy. Carry on.
Whoever wins, Libya will be a huge clusterfuck for the West for years or decades to come. The rebels are like the Mujahadin of 80's. Bad news.
Interesting point. Can you imagine the "oh-so-smart" crowd 5-10 years from now telling us how the US screwed it up when it inevitably turns OBL on them?
Best of luck to them. Gadda... Qada... however you spell it, the guy's scum. Doesn't mean we should be involved there.
We shouldn't be involved firstly. And secondly, it doesn't matter anyway because Gaddafi is going to win this thing one way or another. He's got too much support from that part of the country, he still has his army, and the icing on the cake, tactically it's smart to let his enemies come to him. It'll be hard for NATO to bomb Tripoli if the rebels are within the vicinity. I believe he's preparing a last stand. His people and reserve artillery against the rebellion in a place NATO won't touch. Do not underestimate Gaddafi like you did Mubarak. Gaddafi is a tough old bird and is not going to yield. He knows damned well his life and the lives of his remaining family depend on upon that. Additionally, I think Mubarak went a bit insane toward the end. The riots, and the Cairo disaster for him caught the guy completely off guard and when speeches didn't work, and the army said "fuck this, perfect time for coup of our own," Mubarak fled the scene not knowing what to do. I don't think 'surrender' is part of Gaddafi's vocabulary.
I agree Gaddafi's not sane, but bombs and missiles are remarkably indifferent to the mental status of those they're falling on. In any case, the "we" you're talking about is NATO, so unless your next thought is "No U.S. participation in NATO," you've got a bit of a dilemma.
It'll become a campaign issue, no doubt. Americans are sick of Middle Eastern nation terraforming. I don't think any of us really want to be paying to be over there, especially with this spiraling debt.
Why haven't we started bombing Syria? According to the Messiah we can't allow killings like this to go on.
But Obama (praise his name) wages war because he really, really cares. Bush (both of them) did it to make his fat-cat oil buddies rich.
Panetta is claiming that Gaddaffi will be out in the next few weeks, and says US intel has seen him making preparations to flee to Tunisia. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44192334/ns/world_news-mideast_n_africa/ Haven't heard this from any other source - guess we'll see.
I'm saying it's amusing to observe how easily distracted you guys are. Egypt was the New Shiny, and everybody had an opinion. Libya didn't happen overnight, so it became "What, another one?"
G, do you really think the rebels are good people? Did you not learn the lesson of the Mujahadeen in the 80's, whom we backed to the hilt? Once they had beaten the USSR, the turned their attention to attacking us. In Libya either anarchy, chaos and terrorism will reign if gadaffi looses or we'll see a brutally anti-western gov't worse than what was.
I wonder if The Obama will out whichever group ends up taking him out like he did with our SEAL's who took out OBL.
So....Obama has Syrian citizenship? If not, get the fuck out and back to Washington. Wait, on second thought, go to Syria to straighten things out...we'll send your magic bus to you.
Hold firm, Gaddafi! You and Mubarak locked up more extremists than anyone else over the last 25 fucking years!!!
The one thing that everyone seems to forget is that the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.
