Erdogan has been purging supporters of the secular constitution from the army for several years now and replacing them with people personally loyal to him. Trumped up charges withput any evidence have been used to jail hindreds of people for life. He has also already forced his main political rival into exile and taken control of the media using armed thugs to beat the crap out of any journalists who don't do as they are told. Now, it seems clear he is going to try to eliminate all political opposition.

True to a point, but I think the attempted coup is a double-edged sword in this regard. Yes, it failed, and it superficially cast Erdogan in the light of a supposedly democratically legitimate ruler beset by undemocratic enemies; but it also represents unrest against his government, and a reminder that political power can be fleeting.

A significant number of the military leadership had already previously been purged and replaced with more politically reliable individuals. It's no surprise the military wasn't acting in lockstep as a result.

Secularism may have just died in Turkey. We certainly won't see another military coup in the foreseeable future.

This time it's personal: they cut the power to Incirlik Us Air Force Base - family members ordered to evacuate. Easier said than done, that is a HUGE logistical & legal nightmare of epic proportions.
BTW so far about 2800 Turkish officers have been arrested in the coup. Wait now - let's say there is one officer for every twenty enlisted soldiers. That means 56,000 total military involved in ther coup - pretty damn big coup force!

Well, we have about a dozen crates of military avionics lined up at work ready to ship to Turkey for their F-16s. Wonder if we're still gonna ship 'em.

Erdogan probably did this himself. Either he orchestrated the whole thing somehow, or he got wind of a coup in the works, and then slipped his own men in to make sure it was weak and kicked off at a time more advantageous to him than to the plotters.

It's a Reichstag fire. He is literally Hitler. It's also pretty much what Palpatine did in Star Wars.

Now he is more powerful than ever. Unfortunately, I think the only thing that can save Turkey now would be a straight up assassination, as distasteful as it might be.

How can you not support the democratically elected president of Turkey, Obama's closest and most trusted ally?!!!

The horror of such a coup attempt shows how their nation should be purged of anyone who doesn't support Islam. :mob:

That sounds more like a purge than response to a coup.

True to form, Obama and Kerry will undoubtedly fast-track the extradition of Fethullah Gulen from Pennsylvania to Turkey.

    Daily Mail article

Gulen has harshly condemned the attempted coup attempt by military officers that resulted in a night of explosions, air battles and gunfire that left more than 150 people dead.

But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government is blaming the chaos on the cleric, who lives in exile in Pennsylvania and promotes a philosophy that blends a mystical form of Islam with staunch advocacy of democracy, education, science and interfaith dialogue.

Erdogan has long accused Gulen, a former ally, of trying to overthrow the government. Washington has never found any evidence.

'We haven't received any request with respect to Mr Gulen,' Kerry told reporters.

'We fully anticipate that there will be questions raised about Mr Gulen. And obviously we would invite the government of Turkey, as we always do, to present us with any legitimate evidence that withstands scrutiny. And the United States will accept that and look at it and make judgments about it appropriately.'

'I'm confident there will be some discussion about that,' Kerry added.

President Barack Obama urged all sides in Turkey on Friday to support the democratically elected government in Turkey, a key NATO ally.

Unless Gulen has donated a million dollars or so to Hillary, he's toast. He might as well have made an Internet video mocking Muhammed, because Erdogan will fax Obama a dozen signed confession from the coup plotters and that will be it for Gulen. He'll die with his dick in his mouth for treason and apostasy.

I doubt any of them speak Dutch and mosy of them live in a parallel society bringing in mail order brides from Turkey so they can raise yet another generation of nonassimulated welfare moochers and petty criminals. Germany has tons of Turks who have lived there since the 1960's who still can't speak German.

Sure, ship them - just make the post office stamps them "fragile" and spring for some insurance and tracking numbers - and have someone sign for them on the other end. Assholes will steal anything left on a porch or doorstep these days. :brood:

AP story (the URL may expire).

LUXEMBOURG (AP) -- The Obama administration would entertain an extradition request for the U.S.-based cleric that Turkey's president is blaming for a failed coup attempt, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday.

In a televised speech, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the United States should extradite Fethullah Gulen. Erdogan said Turkey had never turned back any extradition request for "terrorists" by the United States and stressed Turkey's joint role with the U.S. in fighting terrorism. "I say if we are strategic partners then you should bring about our request," he said.

Obama will approve the extradition in between rounds of golf.

ETA: Meanwhile, from a Daily Mail article:

President Erdogan told a crowd chanting for the death penalty on Saturday that such demands may be discussed in parliament after a coup attempt by a faction in the military killed at least 161 people.

And Turkey continues sliding toward sharia.

Turkey coup: 2,700 judges removed from duty following failed overthrow attempt
Turkey’s highest judiciary council suspends judges and members of its own board for links to reformist Muslim leader Fethullah Gülen

The Turkish government has removed 2,745 judges from duty in the wake of a failed military coup in which over 161 people were killed.

The decision followed an emergency meeting of Turkey’s Judges and Prosecutors High Council which was called to discuss members’ links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gülen, the leader of a reformist Muslim movement.

The meeting saw the dismissal of 2,745 judges along with several members of the council itself, which is Turkey’s highest judiciary board.

Turkey’s state-run news agency said authorities have detained 10 members of the council.

The Anadolu Agency said arrest warrants have been issued for 48 administrative court members and 140 members of Turkey's appeals court.

The government has repeatedly blamed the influence of the Gülen movement for the coup and has said the overthrow attempt was carried out by a clique of supporters within the military.

Turkey’s acting military chief of staff Umit Dundar earlier said: “The armed forces is determined to remove members of the Gülen movement from its ranks.”

Mr Gülen, a preacher and former imam, was an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan until 2013. The relationship turned sour after a corruption scandal implicated Mr Erdogan, who then accused Mr Gülen of being behind the corruption investigations.

The Gulenists can't be behind the corruption investigations because they've given Hillary about a million dollars, and she's more corrupt than anyone on the planet.

Like I sais, Spiegal is a very liberal publication so no one, who isn't white, is ever responsible for their own decisions. The point of linking to it was to show Packard how wrong he was when he denied there was any problem.

It's where Dayton stashes all of his made up bullshit.

Anyway, with the massively convenient cleanup Erdogan is performing, I've switched from leaning towards a possible false flag to full-blown knowing it was a false flag operation.

In 2003 some military officers tried to influence politics because they were uneasy about the Islamist AKP taking power and wondered if the Islamist AKP would respect the country's secular constitution. Still, there was no action taken just privite discussions with the then president elect about respecting the country's constitution. One of Erdogan's first acts was to arrest a number of officers and he was outraged when the secular courts, correctly ruled, that Erdogan's evidence against the officers was almost entirely fabricated. This why after this coup fell apart one of Erdogan's first moves was to purge thousands of judges so that no rule of law would stand in his way.

This is going to be a disaster for Turkey because all restraint on Erdogan becoming a dictator has been removed and now we will see a complete purge. Hr had already violated tge constitution and ended tge free press so now the rest of the dictatorship is simply a formality.

Hasn't been true for at least a decade, and English Spiegel, which you're quoting, isn't Spiegel anyway (though the latter is something lots of people get wrong because they really, really try to make it look as if it is).

    Obviously bullshit.

Of course I disagree with your utter nonsense. Doesn't mean I ever claimed there are no problems. Just because I don't agree with you when you say aliens are attacking Manhattan doesn't mean I think there are no challenges in the world to solve. Only, you know, real ones, to be dealt with sanely.

The quote you disagreed with spoke about parallel societies and people not bothering to learn their new nation's language even after decades of living there and sucking up welfare money. THAT was the topic so stop trying to pretend it as about some other topic because it clearly was not. Just like your denial that you ever disagreed was clearly not true.
