The Scenario: The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. At the same time, the religious-conservative Congress has passed legislation banning all abortions, for any reason. The country is in chaos. A number of Blue States are seceding on the grounds that they don't believe the Federal Government has the constitutional right to ban abortion. Red States are threatening to bring them back by force. Which side are you on? (Note - I am using abortion as a modern-day divisive issue on which I am largely neutral - plus this leads to a more or less North/West secession whilst the South and Midwest essentially stay in the Union, to make it more interesting)
Most Blue States outside of New England have more Red Counties than Blue ones, comprising far more land area. You can take a driving tour of nearly every red county in America without ever entering a blue one. Just as Quebec would have no guarantee of leaving Canada with its current boundary intact, no state can expect its integrity to be preserved in such a scenario.
Blue states should have seceded after the '04 elections anyway. Red states would devolve into a Third World country without us feeding 'em our tax dollars.
From the red ones? I envision many per-axle toll booths on the interstate system as one enters isolated blue county areas like Saint Louis City & County, MO; Shelby County, TN; Hinds County, MS; Orleans Parish, LA; Jefferson County, AL; Jefferson County, KY; Cook County, IL; Multnomah County, OR; King County, WA; Denver County, CO; Erie County, NY; Fulton County, GA; Hennepin/Ramsey Counties, MN; Marion County, IN; Clark County, NV; etc.
Some of those Blue state tax dollars would move to Red states. Like me. The cut in pay would be offset by a lower cost of living.
^So what's stopping you now? You might live longer, too. Wouldn't have to be so chronically disgruntled with everything.
Leave because things don't go your way? Knock yourself out. Oh and the red states possess the valuable exports. I wouldn't worry too much about them. To answer the question, I would not fight my countrymen over abortion. Luckily for us, the Blue staters that feel so strongly about it would just move themselves out of the country instead of trying to move the whole state.
This idea that Red States make the bulk of U.S. exports is a myth. They make the bulk of goods for which we have a trade deficit. The blue states make the bulk of goods for which we have a surplus -- high tech, pharmaceuticals, services.
*clears throat* Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord, He has trampled out the vineyards where the grapes of wrath were stored. He has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword. His truth is marching on! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
Well I can't speak for the rest of the Red states but Texas is definitely a leader in technology, energy, medicine, and agriculture.
I'd run away. I'd go to Canada or Australia... or Sweden! Anywhere that I thought would be able to stay out of the fight.
The difference being that the issue garamet has her hemp panties in a wad over only lasts 4 years at a time. Oh, and we also get to vote. That might have been one of those principles.
According to Wiki, seven of the top ten richest states are nominally "Blue" - Texas is second, Florida is fourth, and Georgia is tenth. California, of course, is first (almost twice the GDP of Texas, the nearest competitor), then New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey (huh?) and Michigan (). But perhaps this scenario is unrealistic - I have one that would be even more interesting... Watch the Red Room...
The blue states don't have the cojones to secede. It's the red counties in in CA that wanted to secede.
