Heh, though really Angel did plenty of wrong. Locking the doors on the Wolfram & Hart party after Darla and Drusilla started feeding for one!

The Klan was always bashed within my family. But, outside of my family, they were genuinely seen as the "good guys" in a lot of situations.

Remember, it wasn't against the law to hit, or otherwise abuse, your wife until the mid-to-late 1970's. My earliest memory of the Klan was them "straightening out" a drunk white guy that beat his wife.

Just wondering if the author referred to is a buddy of yours Maud?

Guy seems a little obsessed with NB Forrest.

We never really discussed the Klan in or out of the family when I was young because there wasn't any Klan where I grew up. They do exist where I am now and they've introduced themselves to me a couple of times. That was uncomfortable. I'm getting better at recognizing them because they all have that same look in their eyes. It's kinda like recognizing a copperhead or a rattler: once you've seen one, you know what to look for.

I've heard a couple of similar stories about them in this area where they've visited a white guy who was known to drink and beat his wife and kids, and straightened him out.

I recently had a conversation with an older gentleman who was the grandson of a Klan leader down in the Ocoee, FL area back in the 1930's. He told me a story where there was in incident of a black man raping a white woman. The whites went nuts and started killing the blacks, and the Klan rounded up the remaining blacks in the town and hid them out in the woods for a few weeks until the furor died down and it was safe for them to return home.

There was a local news story a few years ago where they were initiating a new member. They tied him to a tree and blindfolded him, and then had a guy firing a pistol up in the air while another would shoot the new guy with a paintball gun. What goes up must come down and one of the bullets fired up in the air came down and struck one of them in the head and killed him.

They don't seem to be very active these days or in any significant numbers like they once were, but I still wouldn't advise anyone to agitate them. They still burn people's houses down and there was the Greensboro Massacre back in 1979.

My paternal great grandfather was adamantly anti-racism and he raised his children and grandchildren accordingly, which I'll admit was a little unusual in these parts in the 1930's and 1940's.

We've always been Southern Baptist, but I remember a story about him turning out to support a Methodist Pastor after the Klan burnt a cross in his yard for saying that black people were welcome at the church he pastored.

In fact, I've kind of taken up that mantle a little bit myself. I've grown increasingly distressed over the notion of "black churches" and "white churches." But, that's a while 'nother thread.

"the Klan rounded up the remaining blacks in the town and hid them out in the woods for a few weeks until the furor died down and it was safe for them to return home."

Just long enough for the crops to be harvested in their small farm in the woods?

    I kid, I kid.....

"Farming in the woods" was slang for making moonshine, FYI.
