He barely was elected in 1948 and was very unpopular in 1953 when he left office.

    Obviously something was wrong.

"Given'em Hell Harry" was largely a media driven invention. Not something that naturally came from Truman himself. He obtained this distinction mainly because of his attacks on the "do nothing Congress". Led by Republicans.

Once again, can anyone think of any speech given by Truman?

    Any "I am a Berliner"-JFK?

Any "Mr. Gorbachev! Tear Down This Wall!"-Reagan

Even Jimmy Carter's malaise speech was considered exceptional at that time and gave him an overnight popularity boost (though the aftermath turned that completely around).

Any "the people that knocked down these buildings will hear you!"-Bush

So let me get this straight:

    1) Speeches that are remembered for generations mean nothing

    yet

    2) Interviews with some network nonentity that will be forgotten in a few years mean everything?

It was in large part his blunt manner and plainspokenness that led to his unpopularity. A memorable speech or two wasn't going to turn it around for him. He basically told you what he thought and didn't try to BS or impress anybody.

This is what he said when he announced his decision not to seek reelection in 1952:

In the end, of course, Palin resigned because she had no interest in actually being governor and doing all that the job entails.

Horseshit. You guys are fucking amazing sitting there with your dick in your hand, acting like this a milestone worthy of any serious consideration as detrimental to anyone but yourselves. Bitch when she's in office, rape her with tripe lawsuits of which she has been cleared of all, then wonder why she left. I'd tell you to go fuck yourself too.

You guys are scared shitless, otherwise she'd have been left alone long ago but you see a threat. All you guys have managed to do is look the fool and shown that you'll do anyfucking thing to win reguardless of how fucked up the country becomes from this bullshit.

So, let's see you pull a half a mil out of your ass with no end in sight and get back to me. She did what she needed to do for her state and her own pocketbook. How the fuck is she supposed to concentrate on runnng the state with all the fucking yappy dogs are nipping at her heels?

Pathetic, but then, it's expected.

I'm not scared shitless of her, I'm scared shitless of the fact that people were more concerned with her tits than her ability to do the job she was about to be elected to. Say what you will about Obama, but I didn't see women going, "I'm going to vote for him cause he's probably got a big cock."

I look forward to the day when Palin runs for president, and then promptly quits when she realizes she can't win. She'll probably blame the media too.

I'm guessing she's going to quit before she officially declares--not that she won't find a way to blame the media. She's extremely unpopular with a distinct majority of the population, but her supporters are rabid. She really likes the ideas of money and the bully pulpit, but responsibility and policy are completely foreign concepts to her. Rush Limbaugh is her future, or at least the future she's going to aim for if she ever stops to think about it.

I'm guessing Palin makes her peace with Huckabee/Jindal/whoever in 2011 and throws her support early to the leading christianist candidate in order to head off a Mitt Romney nomination. She then settles down to making lots of money doing radio, television, and Regnery.

I know it's been said before, but you guys don't really believe this, do you?

No one is scared of Palin as a Presidential candidate. She's not even scary as a candidate for lesser office. And if you think that she has any desire to do the work of a governing official rather than the work of a politician, you have not been paying attention. She quit the governorship because the Alaska Republicans in charge of the legislature decided she's officially bonkers and refused to play her games. She refused to do any gubernatorial work once the Presidential campaign got under way and even after it ended; the job just wasn't any fun any more. The Alaska Republicans wanted a governor, and now they have one.

If Sarah Palin is a threat to anyone, it has less to do with her strength as a candidate than our weakness as an electorate.

    And Maureen Dowd weighs in....

Sigh. Don't ever change MoDo.

Putting aside any points you may get for 'snark'....the only paranoid here is you, attacking women because they possess a greatness you couldn't never even hope to fractionally match. Is it any wonder then that most people stopped taking you seriously ages ago?

Your relevance these days is not that of a satirist, but just another run-of-the-mill gallows comic.

Even if you were right about the level of stupidity, on her part and/or on the part of the voters....

The voters certainly don't THINK they themselves are stupid so her appeal cannot possibly be "hey, she's a moron like me"

Rather, what's at work here is that the Average Joe often has a lot of contempt for the "Smarter than Thou" attitude that drips from every syllable spoken by the average politician. So when one comes along that doesn't exude that air of superiority, they relate to it.

You might ask that voter "if you could vote for a person who went to six different colleges or one who was a Rhodes Scholar - they might pick the latter.

But if you show them Palin and then you show them the average Rhodes Scholar (not named Bill Clinton) they will like her better

    Instinctively.

Because her attitude and presentation doesn't communicate "I'm better than you and I'm smarter than you" which is what they have come to know and loath in most politicians.

You'd do well NOT to underestimate the power of that.
(It was a HUGE part of Reagan's appeal, by the way, which is why so many otherwise unfounded comparisons are made between the two)

I've never understood that reasoning. Why wouldn't you want the person running the country to be smarter than you? It's kind of an important job.

Would you want to be operated on by a doctor that isn't smarter than you?

It is instinctive, it doesn't have to make sense.

But in any case - the point is not "Is s/he smarter?" the point is "Does s/he present an attitude that says 'I'm smarter than you'"

I assume the vast majority of people who voted for Reagan, or Bush (for obvious examples) THOUGHT the man was smarter than them (and most were right) or at least, smarter within the fields of knowledge Germain to being president.

But neither man exhibited a condescending "I'm smarter than you so shut the fuck up and do as i say" attitude.

In other words, it's not a matter of the perception of intelligence - it's the perception of ATTITUDE.

Oh, and I'll say again - unless you yourself are and demonstrate by your accomplishments that you are highly intellegent, then you are nothing but a parody if you look at a major politician and say "s/he's a moron"

The truth is, morons do not get elected to high office EXCEPT when they trade on previous celebrity (Al Franken springs to mind)

George W. Bush was NOT a moron. He was and is well above average in intellegence.

    Ditto for Palin.

also ditto for lefties that right wingers like to dismiss as morons (Chuck Schumer springs to mind)

Assuming Palin is an idiot is the very best way you can help her succeed because nothing aids your opponent like underestimating them.

    Fuck 'em.

    Fuck 'em.
Wanna catch up to smart people, crack a book.

Yes, instinct, from the reptilian hindbrain, not reasoned, it's not something to be proud of.
If one is proud of it, they ARE stupid.
If it's not stupid to be proudly reactive and ignorant, then nothing is stupid.
But if nothing is stupid, then let's have mental patients run power plants.
Come on, there's standards, it's not "snooty", to point them out.

    Fuck 'em.

Yes, it's the power of the mob, and I never underestimate it.

But I'll never stop calling it what it is, or pretend it has a quark of good in it either.

    Fuck the stupid.

    FuckemfuckemfuckemfuckemFUCKEM!
