Holy fuck they scared. IANAL but I’m guessing these companies aren’t doing this for shits and giggles but because their earlier behavior has them dead to rights.
not Republican suppression per se, but not worthy of it's own thread. Regardless, it fits this thread about as good as any right now. The Georgia runoff (or even presidental race) is a done deal and really to be honest. https://www.wrdw.com/2021/02/25/sta...t-pushed-election-disinformation-report-says/
Georgia Republicans going all in on voter suppression. I always love how these measures are 1000% transparent. Don’t like that Democrats did well in 2020? Do everything possible to make sure less people vote. It’s the American way. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/03/08/politics/georgia-senate-no-excuse-absentee-voting/index.html
Al Gore says every American should be automatically registered to vote amid growing alarm over GOP voter suppression measures https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...gore-voting-rights-election-cnn-b1817904.html
I have never understood voter registration anyway. It's kind of like "signing up to vote". But in a democracy, you shouldn't have to "sign up to vote". You should automatically be "signed up to vote" by being a citizen, of voting age, and not declared ineligible for some reason or other. Do you have to sign up if you want to have "life, liberty, and/or the pursuit of happiness"?
I fully agree in principle. Every person should just be able to walk up and vote. In a Vote By Mail state though, there is some benefit in having folks registered. Just so [X] County Elections can send the right ballot (different cities/legislative districts/fire districts/port districts/etc will have different ballots). But it doesn’t have to be some extra step. Just have it be automatic with Drivers License renewal (as WA does) and also with utilities (which should be municipally controlled). You put water, power and sewer in your name at a new location, that becomes your new registered address unless otherwise noted.
Here you have to initially register to vote when you turn 18, then everything is largely automatic. I actually got a letter just last week. Turned out I hadn't updated my electoral roll details since moving 18 months ago so the AEC sent me a nice letter letting me know that my electoral address had been automatically updated to match that on my drivers license.
I fully agree with that procedure, but that isn't what I would call "registering to vote". That is just the state keeping up-to-date lists of voters. I even agree that if you move or change your e-mail (depending on how your state does it; Michigan does it by e-mail), you should have to inform the voters' list of your new address, or risk not receiving your ballot or not receiving the right ballot (which amounts to the same thing, since you don't have the right to vote in a place where you don't live, so you can't legally use a wrong ballot). But that still isn't "registering to vote".
From the beginning it was intended to stop undesireables from voting, especially poor and immigrants. Pennsylvania was the 3rd state to impose voter registration - it was only enacted in cities to try to depress immigrant populations, giving the advantage to the rural landowners. Same as it ever was. There's nothing particularly new in US politics, just ignorance, apathy and disinformation.
Doesn't surprise me. One of the big problems of democracy is how to prevent people from voting "the wrong way", which of course includes doing something about people who are pretty much sure to vote "the wrong way". What kind of stable government can you have when the outcome of an election might upset everything? Look at what happened last year...
Now that you mention it, I don't understand the point either. But in order for that to work, an ID or drivers license would be needed to verify the person's name and address and many folks are against that.
Especially folks who have never had a driver's license or photo ID or even a birth certificate, given the fact that their mothers were denied admission to "Whites Only" hospitals in the pre-Civil Rights era. You clowns can keep repeating your drooling "Duh, I dunno why everybody don't have a driver's license" bullshit, and we'll just keep on smacking you back with this until you go away.
I agree if you are a legal, authorized citizen you should be able to vote by default. That said proving who you are and where you live * with a (free) picture ID should be required. * as already addressed, because many elections are at the local/county/state level just being a US citizen wouldn't cut it for those.
Wait. Are you suggesting *I* pay for someone else’s photo ID through tax dollars?!?? Fuck you! I think I’m better at making decisions about how my money is spent!!
There are many ways to verify where someone lives. At my local library, you can prove residence by showing a utility bill with your name on it.
That's how I registered when I first moved to SoCal. I had my NYS photo ID and an electric bill. Of course, this is California and I'm whiter than white, so folks like @T.R are dumb enough to believe that, because it's easy for them, there's something equivalent to equality for everyone who lives in the 50 LITTLE FIEFDOMS.
