Ideally, it could be a comment system without any points associated with it. Anyone can use it. Apparently that isn't possible, so the way it is now is the next best thing. Leave it the way it is.
Yes and no. It's not possible to have "X agrees" vs. "X disagrees" without two differing point values, but both could be "X comments" at 0 points.
I agree with tafkats's post, and also with 14thDoctor's agreement with tafkats's post, and also with foil's agreement with 14thDoctor's agreement with tafkats's post.
It was totally fun, like 8 years ago. This predates you on this board, but I used to play it, and far better than most. But now it's old and tedious. It's still useful as shorthand for otherwise non-contributing posts, but for trolling, it's highly unimaginative.
I don't mean fun like 24/7 all rep all the time fun. But, there were some good suggestions last year when we discussed getting rid of rep. Like ... reset it every year - keep the positive and negative pips and then have the winner and loser be on the forgies award. Don't remember all of them, but ... you can probably find the thread in the help desk. I seldom rep anyone and the rep wars when I first arrived were mildly amusing, but ... it's available for the board and it could be used fun rather than annoyance, so ... why not?
I disagree about a content swing as of late. I think what's happened is the election was quite interesting to talk about and we had a lot of POV from each side (moreso than years past). That's ended obviously and a rut has formed. What's the big topic now? But I'm not sure you can attribute the positive change we had over the past several months to the neutering of rep. And we've always been able to be vicious without using rep when rep was available. Maybe it's brought out more creativity. I will say, however, that I've gotten used to not using rep - not to say that I wouldn't know what to do with it (and who to do it to) the minute it was restored. I guess at this point, I don't care.
I thought it was fine the way it was, but I don't really care either way now. The deed is done, let's move on with our "lives", shall we?
I don't think that word means what you think it means. Either that or you're a complete moron repeating it over and over when it's inaccurate.
Obviously it's not self-explanatory. There have already been several other people who have expressed that they don't share your views, so I'm wondering what you are seeing that we aren't seeing.
Here's my proposed compromise to make everyone unhappy: Reenable negative rep, but anyone who 1) repwars, 2) spams image rep, or 3) whines about other posters turning off their reputation displays by rule gets his or her reputation set to max-neg. If neg-repping can be a game and not a troll then it will be silly, but tolerable.
Since it's an opinion, not sharing views isn't really important. However, essentially nothing of substance has changed on the board. Getting rid of rep the way it was only got rid of an annoying side effect. There is just as much back-biting, stalking, trolling and hate as ever. Instead of Rep War we have avatars and post reporting and there is no less trying to drive off people who are unliked, it's just done with different tactics. SD, DS.
I offer my own prosposal: Anyone who trolls or spams with rep, will be set to maximum red. At that point, I shall go to that person's house, and have sex with them (I will be gentle). This will likely motivate everyone to stay out of the red, save for the really horny people whose standards aren't what they used to be. Also, enlisted person.
Spamming images is already not supposed to happen. And it's because it can randomly destabilize board function. The first time there is so much as a glitch due to someone spamming someone else's RepCP that person will get a good, long ban. Yes, that means you Sokar. Rep is not the stablest of hacks, it's only a matter of time that shit does damage. Long ago we asked folks not to do it to protect the board and it's funny how most people seem to remember and have no problem avoiding doing that. I suggest you stop. Otherwise...tick-tock.
Reputation is built into this version. What isn't built in is the specific modifications made to rep that have been added in over the years.
My opinion is what it's always been: put it back like it was with the AAA system and leave it the hell alone.
That's the reason no one was jumping to see rep get fucked with from the beginning! Obviously, there were a few assholes who just want to fuck with people, but that's every goddamn board. Which is why we should have neither made Enterpriser rules against the trolls nor kissed ass to the whiny crybabies who just wanted to shit over everyone's fun. But putting that aside, I have to agree with Chad in that I don't see the board being any more or less vicious than when rep was gutted. The last few months have seen more posters return than I can remember seeing outside of memorial posts, and I can't say I'm not happy to see Gul and Aurora bringing some sense to the liberal side of most arguments. But still, if I had it my way, I'd put rep back to the way it was. That, or just leave the comment aspect and remove the points, because I think most people here just like the fact that they can share an agreement or disagreement without bumping a months-old thread to do so.
Avatars and reporting posts have been abused in the past, and barring significant rule changes, will continue to be abused in the future. It's the WF way to toe the line like that. I don't see why you think changing rep would suddenly change that. As far as the trolling, etc. I see it as not quite as severe, and when it does occur, it at least seems to be on-topic (save for a few WF memes such as posters getting into pissing contests with garamet). And while there still is a desire by some to drive off posters, we have actually seen several inactive/low-activity posters come back throughout the year. I can't say whether or not that's due to rep, but there has been a marked improvement at the board which doesn't fit with the narrative you're trying to sell.
Rep was nothing more than a left vs right battle. Any of you fuckers saying otherwise can stuff your faux altruism where the dingleberries roam.
On that I will have to disagree. We lost some good posters over the pussification (rep reset) of Wordforge. Sure, gul and Aurora came back, and Storm stopped by briefly to promote his book, but that's about all we gained. We used to discuss real topics here. Have you looked at the Red Room lately? Page 1 is mostly junk, bullshit threads that just kind of sit there going nowhere. We lost quality and quantity. Some of us even tried to warn the staff that it was a bad move and what the consequences would be, but were ignored. Now, here we sit, 6 months later, and we've lost posters and quality of discussion.
Ward, for one. I don't think I've seen brudder around much. Caboose is still here, but not as active as he once was. Sokar is not around as much. I don't post near as much as I used to: there's just not much interesting discussion going on.
