This whole thing is a bluff. And to be honest, you can't really blame them. If they were to try and take back the Baltics tomorrow, what would we do?
So we probe back. We honor our obligations to the Georgians. We load em up on Globemasters, and fly em in under heavy escort and see if the Russians are stupid enough to even scratch the paint on one. Wouldn't hurt if the Globemasters had a few extra items aboard that would aid the Georgians, either.
Oh, and something else not mentioned. Here's the plot from a SEVEN YEAR OLD video game: Ghost Recon Ghost Recon begins in August 2008, with civil unrest in Russia. Ultra-nationalists have seized power in Moscow, with plans to rebuild the Iron Curtain. Their first step is clandestine support of rebel factions in Georgia and the Baltic States. This is where the Ghosts come in: to silence the rebellion. Armed with some of the most advanced weaponry in the world, the soldiers of the Ghost Recon force are covertly inserted into Eastern Europe and given specific missions to curtail the rebel actions and overthrow their benefactors. ... During the first few missions of the game, the Ghosts battle South Ossetian rebel forces from the north of Georgia, who are harassing the legitimate government and its allies. The Ghosts fight in the forests, on farms, and in villages while assisting their NATO allies in fighting the enemy. Unfortunately, the Russian government complains to the United Nations that the Americans have interfered in their affairs, and eventually they send in their army to aid the South Ossetian rebels. The U.S. cannot hope to stop the Russian Army from invading Georgia, so the Ghosts slow down the invading forces so that their allies can evacuate. Eventually, the Ghosts are all that's left of the U.S. forces in Georgia, and they evacuate by SH-60 Seahawk helicopter on the rooftop of the American Embassy in T'bilisi, just barely avoiding the Russian forces. The Georgian government flees to Geneva and sets up a government-in-exile. Sadly, with the fall of T'bilisi, Georgia surrenders and is forcefully incorporated into the RDU. After Georgia falls, the Caucasus region is vulnerable to further attacks. The Georgian government, Great Britain, Germany, and the U.S. all protest the Russian invasion, but Moscow ignores this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy's_Ghost_Recon_(video_game)
Sir just wait until Obama takes the Oval Office. The Bear is going to throw her weight around all over the place.
I gotta reload that game and play it. I think Tom Clancy should sue Russia for copyright infringment.
Since Georgia uses so much ex-Soviet kit, the only way to tell friend from foe may be which way the barrels are pointing.
Well... From my experience, the Georgians will be the ones in DCUs (hey, we phased them out, gotta sell them to someone). And in Iraq at least they rolled in HMMWVs
I was talking more about vehicles, crunchie. That said, a lot of Georgians are wearing MARPAT, too. Check the "pickup truck" photo I posted a few hours ago.
Tom Clancy has a habit of writing books or making video games based on situations that occur for real 5 years down the road.
Gee that's odd.......... I must have been in a coma for the hijacked nuclear missile submarine, World War III in Europe, a nuclear act of terrorism almost killing the US President at a football game, a attack on the Royal Family of the UK foiled, a covert drug war gone bad resulting in the President going down, the defeat military and economic of a nuclear armed Japan, and a war between Russia and China.
I always figured that President Fowler and Elizabeth Elliot were Bill and Hillary even though the book was written before they took office.
"SEAL Team 6"? There isn't actually one nowadays, they having been renamed thanks to Marcinko being... overzealous. But that mission would be outside their scope of operation anyhow. I'm thinking more Team 4 or 3.
Yes, but if he'd excercised just a BIT of common sense, he'd have gone a lot further. Having Red Cell go full contact in dealing with civilians when they were doing training and eval excercises was... not a bright idea.
I agree with that. Marcinko almost seemed to be more worried about his own image than accomplishing the mission at hand. At least that is the impression I got from other SEALs.
Well, the silver lining to this, is if we don't stop Putin and the Russian here, and then Obama gets elected, a "Red Dawn" remake won't be completely retarded.
I'm finding it odd that the Russians managed to pull all this off so quick as it was meant to be a quick response. Doesn't it take more then 24hours to pull the resources together to mount any sort of large operation? Oh and they have started blockading the black sea ports now, this would be a good time to move Astute down there and let them know what the senior service can do.
What a gyp! That convoy gets to look at awesome mountain scenery! My Iraq Invasion convoy sucked...all I got to see was sand and dust!
The Ukraine? Goddess Mila Kunis is Ukranian! Certainly there are many more like her there...we must ensure their safety!
