I've been re-watching Spitting Image eps from the original series (puppet satire show from the UK, recently revived but initially ran 1984-1996) lately. Coverage of the BP privatisation (yes, BP was once nationally owned by the UK) is depressing - lots of jokes about the failure of the sell-off to meet expectations and a share being worth "only another share. Yet despite record profits this year, we had our government (until it became clear they were at the point of the guillotine) saying a windfall tax on BP to offset the MASSIVE increase in household energy bills would lead to lack of investment.

For people who start from the ground up without wealth or wealthy families, this is not always true. There is certainly a point in many start ups where owners forgo pay, and they get help from family and others below a livable wage. This does not apply to Walmarts.

Of course, if you spend forever in the area where you cannot pay a living wage then you should probably get out. However, some money is often better than no job which is why you will easily find people so desperate to work that they will.

If you really want the poor to have the ability to say no to work where they are underpaid and not appreciated you make sure they have the basics to survive. But we do not want to talk about government providing food, shelter, medicine, electricity, and things like that because socialism makes the Rapist party cry.

How about we all just submit for mental health screenings, and lock up anyone with proven violent tendencies?
