My last job wasn't great in a lot of ways, but one thing that I could generally count on was that it was consistent work (you knew you were getting 40 hours in, and they weren't going to surprise you with mandatory overtime). Then they said that they were going to lay us off for two weeks and that we might face another short layoff next month. Unemployment here is $250/wk (after taxes), I can't really afford to live on that, so I began looking for another job, at least one to tide me over for the two weeks we were going to be off. I applied for a job at a company that was somewhat similar to what I had been doing (though it required more skills). I figured that it was a bit of a long shot that I'd get it and that if I could keep it for the two weeks I was going to be laid off, I'd consider it a win, and just go back to my old job. In the phone interview, they offered me more than what I was making at my old job, so I was really interested. When I went in for an interview, the description of the job was such that I felt I'd better make it clear that I wasn't entirely certain I was qualified for it. Their response was to offer me more money. A lot more. HTF could I turn that down? My first, full paycheck from the job (thanks to all the OT), was four times the largest check I ever made at my previous job, and nearly double the largest paycheck I'd ever gotten. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to keep the job, but I'm going to ride that train for as long as I possibly can. I make it another month, and I'll be debt free.

I could apply for a Readership. In fact, when I applied for Senior Lecturer folk told me I could have probably made Reader then. But apart from £3k a year more (before tax), is it worth the extra expectations? I can currently pay my mortgage, cover my bills, afford a few luxuries... why would I want the added stress?

Academia doesn't have an "up or out" system like the military, thankfully.

Yeah, but the jobs where someone would work for little or no money are pretty rare. I helped to restore a Tucker once owned by George Lucas. Really didn't matter to me what I got paid for the work, since that's something very fucking few people can put on their resume. But not too many opportunities like that come along in one's life.

If you are correct, volunteer labor doesn't ever happen.

    It does.

    Therefore, you are not correct.

Democrats have a few of those. Controlled mass media, rampant cronyism and corruption, corporate power protected, distain for human rights, identification of enemies as a unifying cause, obsession with crime and punishment, fraudulent elections, rampant sexism.

Show me how I’m wrong. Most major media outlets are left leaning and MSNBC does the talking points for the DNC. Obama bailed out the banks and let the CEO’s walk away with money in their pocket and Tim Geitner, a former Wall st. douche was his treasury secretary. Sounds a lot like cronyism and corruption to me as well as corporate power protected. Distain for human rights: Obama assassinates an American citizen without due process. Identifying enemies as a unifying cause: identity politics, cancel culture. Obsession with crime and punishment: California laws refusing to arrest theives, refusing to do anything about homeless people, allowing drug addicts to run wild. They’re pretty obsessed with not punishing criminals. Fraudulent elections: Dead people voting, illegal immigrants voting, changing election laws days before the election, all of the other shenanigans they pulled leading up to the 2020 election. And before you start, no I don’t think there was enough to overturn the election, Biden is legit, but you can’t say there was no fraud, there was. Sexism: the obsession with allowing trans athletes to compete in women’s sports to the deterrent of actual women. The transgender bathroom thing when women don’t want men in dresses in the same bathroom with them.

If you are working for nothing, you are volunteering.

If you were specifically asking Tuckerfan if he would have volunteered to detail Lucas' car, fine. But your broader point "it's always about pay" is still invalidated by the fact that people do volunteer work on a regular basis.

Not sure why you're being obtuse about this, but the point is that no one will work 40+ hours a week for free. There has to be compensation because THAT's the world we live in.
We also live in a world that is controlled by the wealthy.
    The wealthy controls wages
In comparison to executive wages, worker wages are extremely low across the board.
Everyone (workers) needs more money just to survive. Costs for goods and services have increased right along with the increase in GDP. Wages, however, have been flatlined since the 1980s - globally.
Anyone who isn't making career choices based on rate of pay have either chosen to not participate in the corporate world or they have a trust fund that will sustain them regardless of what they do. Most workers do not have that choice.

No, but IMO your statement about "it's always about pay" is entirely inaccurate.

If you had said, "it's about compensation and quality of life" then I would have agreed with you.

Let's say I was offered a $250,000 salary from an organization that required me to commute daily to an office that was 50km away.

Another organization offered me a $200,000 salary for a similar job, but I could work from home.

Guess which job I would take?

Hint: It's not always about pay.

What a post. This is the exact type of post that you'd make if you supported a political party that ticks most, if not all the boxes of moving towards fascism and you knew it, but wanted to deflect away from that unfortunate reality

Then, you'd follow it up with poorly thought out, embarrassing examples like this:

Don't mind @Federal Farmer 's preferred party sliding into fascism you guys, because the Democrats sorta kinda do a tiny fraction of the things that Republicans do

The best part is that he thinks he's being sneaky but you can see right through the kid
