Yes, they would. Most of them would attempt to obtain government assistance. That would be an improvement by their standards, which is exactly why this is an economic argument, not a racial one. Your last question is immaterial.

    Prove it.

    Where did I mention race?

Nevertheless, you've just answered it. You're one of those climb the ladder and then kick it out from under everyone else types.

Those of us who remember Donnie from NY (I'm surprised you don't) know that's the kind of language he's always used. Well, maybe not on Celebrity Apprentice because he knew he'd be bleeped, but...

Sure, but Durbin's undoubtedly a lying POS with an agenda. He's a Dick. Who knows how much of his recollection is accurate or colored by his plans?

And Barry O called the Boston Police stupid, as I recall. Even "classy" guys say dumb shit.

I'll never be seen defending or excusing Trump's obnoxiousness, that's prima facie - but in this case have a bit of curiosity what was said/in what context.

:wtf: Where does he say anything that's even remotely about "their merits"?

Going from trumps statement to "I agree, whether someone should be allowed to immigrate should be based on their qualification" is like... responding to somebody saying "we don't need more niggers in our universities, we need more folks from decent neighborhoods" by saying "I agree, admission to university should be merit-based"

I'm not saying you are racist, I just have a hard time understanding why your defending one.

What is is with the rationalising? It's like building a reverse-strawman; "translating" what the guy said until it sounds like something a coherent politician might say, instead of some foaming troll.

Anyways, as for the Norwegians... I guess most of them don't have much of a reason to move to the US anyway

Statistics regarding use of government programs by immigrants widely available. Do your own work.

Then you agree it's not a race issue? Well done. Score one for you.

You're part of the crowd always saying they're fleeing war torn, oppressive and poor countries where they don't have two nickels to rub together.

Even if they had money, factor in foreign exchange and the higher cost of living here in the West.

Of course they're going on government assistance. You can't have it both ways. Don't be fucking intentionally daft.

    https://cis.org/Fact-Sheet/Fact-Sheet-Haitian-Immigrants-United-States

Just under half are on welfare of some sort or another. Educational attainment is about half the native born rate. The majority arrived as illegal aliens then used the Earthquake as a way to file for TPS to avoid deportation. I think it is safe to say a very large percentage would come here and sign up for welfare. Also please note that around 1/3rd of the current population of Haitians in the US are illegal and so do not qualify for welfare (they came after the earthquake and so are not eligible for TPS) so if all of them were legalized and allowed to claim welfare their welfare usage rate would probably go up by a third.

Whereas if your home were destroyed and you ended up with the clothes on your back in a country where you didn't speak the language, you'd be Jeff Bezos within a year. :dayton:

Now go ahead and :sob: "BUT THEY'RE ILLEGAL!11!!" as if you've never broken a law.

brown skinned immigrants joining the US military and being very successful is  and I have discussed this before. It's not about any particular individual, it's about how fucked up in general are their countries of origin. That's why these talented people leave their shit-hole (oops did I say that?) countries to join the US military. If any young people from the US join the Haitian military for a better opportunity please let me know. Just sayin'

Thus most of us here agree that Haitians are okay, but their government/country is corrupt, dysfunctional, and basically FUBAR.

He doesn't, but that's a possible interpretation. You'd certainly agree that a random, say, Norwegian is more likely to be educated and have marketable skills than a random Haitian, no?
Except what Trump said is not unambiguously racist, and certainly nothing like your analogy. His concerns could be economic in nature, and that he was demeaning the countries--and not the people themselves--supports that idea.
It's not clear to me that he is, or, at least, is as egregiously as his opponents claim.
Young people looking for opportunities do.

It's more than a difference of opinion, it's disrespecting the American tradition and values on which we thrived. More than that, he's a huge hypocrite for having benefited from a historically liberal immigration policy.

People got all bent out of shape over football players kneeling; I'd say statements like Paladin's disrespect America a hell of a lot more.

Sure... But if he actually wanted to make a point about marketable skills, why make it in a complicated way that first needs to be translated using probabilistic reasoning about the average Haitian Vs Norwegean? Why not say: we only want people that can demonstrate marketable skills? It seems "far more likely" that he's either racist or pondering to a base that is... Or of which he thinks that it is. Most likely a sad mixture of the three.

Please. This is no longer a country made up of thirteen colonies. It's now one with more than 300 million people with which we don't even have the resources to support(infrastructure, education, health care). Pretty much every large first world country has strict immigration laws. There is nothing heartless about saying "we should make sure to take care of our own poverty before bringing in more."
