Here's the problem.

The city sold the parks off without telling any taxpayer it was doing it. Each park was sold for $1,000.

The parks were sold to a newly created non-profit group headed by one of the city commissioners. Who also voted to sell the parks.

Once sold the police and heavy equipment were sent to the parks. Who paid for that? Was it the city who paid the police and heavy equipment?

It looks like the city violated the states sunshine laws by doing this in secret.

Are they getting the parks back? If so than clearly they broke state law over the statues. No court is going to let that fly as clearly the city was running a scam to over-ride state laws.

If they aren't getting the parks back than how did they come up with a value of $1,000? On whose authority does the city have the right to sell taxpayer owned land without letting the taxpayers know about?

What if they could have got a better deal from someone else?

Again I have zero problem with taking the statues down. However it has to be done right. If they wanted to sell the parks it should have been public knowledge and other people should have been allowed to bid on the parks.

Yeah I don't think you understand the concept. You don't break state law because the citizens of your town want something and the state said no.

The city still has to follow the law.

Now the city mayor and the commissioners have potentially put themselves in legal jeopardy since the state will now be investigating to see if anything criminal took place given that this was done in secret and the land was severely undervalued at a $1000 a park AND the land was bought by one of the commissioners who voted on the sale. On top of that there is a good chance the state will sue and a judge will tell the city to put the statues back.

What will be accomplished other than wasting more taxpayer money?

If they wanted the statues gone they should have publicly put the parks up for sale and gone that route.

Memphis apparently doesn't think they broke state law. They think they found a loophole. If they're wrong, then they're wrong and the courts will say so, but the taxpayers in this instance are the ones who wanted the statues gone in the first place. I don't think they mind.
