Sorry, but who are you saying was doing the goading? Dayton INVITED the link to be posted, and for one purpose only, to get someone in trouble. Had he not done so, I dare say the link probably wouldn't even have been posted.

For the most part, the nature of the type of work I do means a lot of the people I act for are decent people who simply are facing problems, often through no fault of their own. Yes, there are also some shits, but I'm not there to make personal judgments about their character. This, on the other hand, is not a professional setting. It is a discussion board, the primary function of which is to provide leisure time to it's members. The comparison to clients is therefore nonsense and, frankly, doesn't really make sense.

There is clearly a two way argument here. I am not buying your "rule was broken by default and that's it" argument. There are other factors. Dayton's consent to the link being posted. He admitted conduct that he did it to get someone in trouble. The extent to which the information was known and available, and whether or not any new information about him exists (which, arguably, it doesn't).

That's simply not true. Only one link was posted, by one poster, who was invited by Dayton to do it with the express intention of getting him in trouble.

I do not consider being routinely derided online "power". Dayton has revealed so much of himself online that it would not be hard for his employers or the parents of his students to track him here. If anything, the only thing he has achieved is to paint a very detail picture and history of just how odious many of his opinions and actions are.

He has made dozens of statements about intention. That he generally fails to entrap the target really doesn't matter regarding this point.

Zombie believes the rules have been bent to leave Dayton exposed to greater harm than is allowed. As such, he is right to speak up. I disagree with him that the rules were bent, but completely agree with the notion that we must defend the very lowest scum in our society or face threats to the rest of us. If Dayton were treated unfairly, I would speak up for him too, but the truth is, nobody did anything but collate information that Dayton himself made available.

Plus, often in law rules are not just to be taking literally, other factors must also be considered akin to those I have mentioned about. Intention, action and effect are all relevant factors. The rules on this board are not statutory law, they are simply guidelines put in place at the behst of the existing owner. He, and those he nominates, are entitled to interpret those rules as they think is appropriate.

If you think a decision has not gone how you think it should, fine. Say so. But it's not worth getting upset over and using it to defend an evil man like Dayton.

In fairness, I agree that--at least in the context of the Trek threads--that there's no reason to drag his personal business into those. What does his wife beating and views on sexuality have to do with that? He says enough rediculous things about Trek that can be called on and picked apart.

But you're a hundred percent right that he's a grown man who has brought the treatment he gets upon himself. How is he any different from Actormike getting trolled for being a dick, or Doc being trolled for defending a pedophile, or Enlisted Peanbrain getting trolled for being a bigot or Poodle getting trolled for being a closeted homophobe or Tasvir for being Tasvir or Mewa for being a hypocrite, or any number of posters over the years that decide to become cunts?
