I've already read the plot summary on wikipedia. I'm not impressed. Sounds like run of the mill boilerplate Star Trek. No surprises. Star Trek deserved better for something as big as the 50th anniversary. Maybe for the 60th we'll be more fortunate.
Ok here we go spoilers, spoilers, spoilers. I'm just going to say it out right. Best Trek movie since First Contact. This movie is the Trek movie I've been waiting for. It's very reminiscent of the best of TOS. It is in level playing ground as the TOS movies. It has slow beats and fast beats. The interactions between the crew are fantastic. Bones and Spock get great moments. The big three get moments together. Everyone has something to do. This movie is the read deal. Now about the movie. I'm not going to go into the plot, but there are two things going on in this movie I found... facinating. One is Kirk is struggling with being out in space so long and is seeking a vice admiral position, a desk job. The second is Spock finds out that Ambasador Spock has died and so he wants to take over on New Vulcan. These things sort of play out throughout the movie. At the end we get an Enterprise A. Let me tell you, it looks a lot better. Speaking of the Enterprise, we get a lot of great shots of the ship. The best moment in the whole movie is Spock is going through old Spock's stuff and there is a picture of the TOS crew on the Enterprise A. It was just an amazing unexpected moment. The audience clapped at the end, however when I was walking out someone said the last one was better with Khan. I almost shit myself. They were young so maybe they were unaware of TWOK. Anyway this movie was great and visually stunning. A+. Bring on the next one. They finally hit their stride. I'd be fine with more movies with this cast. ETA: Kirk's captain's log is one of the best in all of Trek. Ghostbusters is going down.
Wait no longer. Here it is. Meh. It's a junk food meal: tastes good while you're eating it but it's ultimately unsatisfying because not memorable. You certainly won't be bored: the movie is a series of action sequences stitched together with whatever the plot needs to keep going. The villain is weak, poorly explained, and mostly a waste of Idris Elba. The big reveal of his secret isn't all that stunning because (1) it isn't set up to be, and (2) it was spoiled by the ad campaign. Generic female bad-ass is little developed beyond kicking ass and saying things strangely because of her limited knowledge of English. After much build-up, she plays almost no active role in the resolution. Also, a bit of a Mary Sue since she fixes Federation tech that Scotty can't figure out. Stop me if you've heard this one: guy abandoned on an alien world seeks revenge against those he blames, and seeks to acquire a superweapon of mass destruction that Kirk possesses in order to achieve that goal. The effects are great; I want to live on Yorktown Station. The new Enterprise being built--you did know that would happen, right?--is shown in a very cool 30 second time lapse sequence. Yes, McCoy and Spock share some camaraderie; you've seen most of it in the trailers. And wtf? Spock just routinely shows emotions now? There's just nothing clever or novel or surprising here. Given the reviews, my expectations were a bit higher. Alas, disappointed. My least favorite of the JJverse. 6/10.
Sure it's the same basic plot of TWOK, but so was Nesmesis. I was less concerned about that. It didn't bother me because the rest of the stuff that was going on. Spock showed emotion because he was presumably dying and shared a moment with McCoy. Besides he had a lot blood loss.
No. Fuck adults. Adults are boring. They drive boring cars and fuck boring girls. They like boring TV and read boring books.
Yeah, because if you fuck children, you go to jail. Unless you're a religious leader, in which case, you'll probably be shuffled off to some other church.
Okay. First, a confession. I saw STB last night at 10:45pm after drinking a wee bit heavily with some friends. I realized today that perhaps I wasn't seeing it under optimal conditions. So, I just saw it again. Well, all my criticisms--underdeveloped villain, hackneyed plot, lack of anything novel or surprising--still stand. However, the dumb action movie part of it is better than I gave it credit for. I enjoyed this much more the second (sober and rested) time. I'm raising my score a full point and a half: 7.5/10. I think I still like STID better, but this is a pretty good time at the movies.
One thing that stuck with me on both viewings... The sequence where the Enterprise arrives at Yorktown is so good, it's almost magical. The music is perfect and the place is just so majestic. It's the equivalent of the Titanic leaving port in Titanic (albeit in the opposite direction) where the experience totally draws you into the movie's reality.
There was a ton of very well appreciated "call backs" to the musical style of TOS, especially in the scene where Krall and Kirk first fight. I enjoyed it. I don't nitpick movies the way some people do. I'll see it again.
In case the other staffbets haven't said anything to avoid being spoilered: cut it out. That goes for everyone here.
