that's a whole lot of ablative plot armor.

the helmets are redundant as there was no ground combat from what's been said on screen about the E-R war. You may as well claim that the USN sailors at Midway had no idea what a Japanese person looked like.
also gonna wind up nit picking that 22nd C Romulan groundpounders shouldn't have late 24thC super corpse disolving cyanide tablets way more than Talinn having that big honkin' disruptor. Prolly not good for troop morale anyways.

seriously dude, you're repitching Space: Above and Beyond and shoehorning it into Trek.

Like it or not, the Earth/Romulan War is set at a time when the NX-01 is the flagship of the fleet and Archer would likely be an Admiral by then and in order to make the connection, you’d probably need a brief cameo with Scott Bakula.

I’m just spitballing ideas and I’ve never seen Space: Above and Beyond. How would you do it then since you think you’re so smart?

    E-R war?

I wouldn't... at least not as a basis for a series. Too many canonical restrictions to appease the youtubers and it wouldn't be all that interesting unless you got rid of'em.
Even the bloody NX 01 is more advanced already.

So let's start in 2160 in the last months of the war.

Hero ship is an NX refit, but we also have a Rom counterpart

lower cased a and b plots are the diplomats on both sides, a c plot of recurring S31 vs Tal Shiar characters on a neutral planet (Cheron, maybe?)

We get to the truce, start having mixed crews on starships making copious references to tech exchanges to justify it

    2161 S2

Alliance starts forming into the UFP. Our diplomats from last season have a new goal working that out. Lots of civilian life on founding member planets giving us more Andor and Tellar now that we've seen Vulcan so much

Hero ship takes on mixed crew or the crew transfers to a new hero ship... actually, I kinda like that better. We can destroy the old one at the big final battle of last season and clear out a few of the less interesting characters. Maybe give them a mission to pick up all the delegates to the convention as a four-eight episode arc

ends with them arriving for the signing to happen

S3 and beyond we can have conflicts with established and non established antagonists like the Nausicaans or even Cardassians (who are too far out to be a challenge this early). I don 't know if they should be an exploration mission so much as start with a pioneer one... setting up subspace infrastructure and such, and maybe ending up on picket duty along the NZ. Hmm.. that'd work, we could focus on a grunt crew of combat engineer types with our bridge crew playing second fiddle this season. Maybe bring back our Rom heroes from S1 for the second part where they're on patrol?

    Characters, I'll think of later.

    Legacy guest star appearnces include:
Sarek is born in 2165, so we'll meet his father, Skon. As his mother was never named, I'm going to give that honour to T'Pol.
Archer is Ambassador to Andor (2169)before becoming part of the UFP council. We may need to fast forward the year we're set in for this S4 appearance given Bakula getting older.
Hoshi and Reid we can work in an S31 subplot at any point
Mayweather is back to being a space trucking civilian
Phlox's actor has stated no interest, but we can throw in one of his spouses or kids
We'll keep Trip dead and name the S2 ship after him, justifying it's mission parameters.

We don't need to see the Romulan War on-screen, but it would have been interesting to see it tackled as the war plot of Discovery S1.

    jsut finished episode one.

lots of good... leave it at seeds of what we expect the characters to develop into. Uhura in particular has a great moment, showing more empathy in a couple of shots than all the Betazoids we've ever known.

That was basically The Orville meets Discovery, which is what I wanted.

Would have liked a two part/feature length premiere but that isn't really a thing nowadays in the streaming landscape.

yeah... it was the relatively simplistic thing that a certain segment has been clamoring for (so I expect they will hate it). They did it well though. Like, we totally get it in one scene why Spock eventually gets cucked.

Federal Farmer is going to fucking hate it.

Really good start to the series. Didn't tread a lot of new ground in terms of Star Trek tropes, but definitely laid a solid foundation for the series' future.

Also liked that they blamed Discovery for almost destroying a civilization.

P.S. - check out my Red Room thread for further debate on why I think a lot of folks are going to hate this series.

I really enjoyed it. So much great eye candy (seriously, I'm not just talking people, but the Enterprise is gorgeous), a little moral philosophizing, some humor, humans being human and getting into awkward situations, Vulcans being Vulcans and getting out of awkward situations, also, I have a good feeling about Spock and T'Pring. They won't let their personal arguments run too farr amok.

Seriously, though, this was a lot of fun. If this is the general tone of the season, I am going to be very satisfied with what we get overall. Here's hoping.

The use of "Day the Earth Stood Still" in the opening telegraphing the actions Pike would eventually take was a nice touch.

Yeah. I actually teared up at that scene for reasons not at all associated with the episode of Star Trek, but it was an unexpected hit to the heart, and I loved it for what it was. My mom would have been so excited with this pilot episode. It was bright, clear, direct, the themes were familiar, and she would have really liked Anson Mount as Pike, and she would have loved seeing one of her favorite movies showing up in the pilot.

It's also a callback to ST:TMP and Run Silent, Run Deep, as both were directed by Wise and RS,RD was hugely influential on the "Balance of Terror" episode of TOS.

That was a very strong opener. Let's see if it remains consistent. (Picard S02 certainly didn't.)

Well, that was almost more story in one episode than all of Picard S2 combined. If they can keep it up, might not be a train wreck.

I hope it is just a straight up episodic series. Outside of DS9, Trek hasn't really done season-long arcs all that well.

I wish that they had cast someone who looked or acted more like Nichelle Nichols' version of the character.

Yeah it was decent, better than anything I’ve seen from Discovery or Picard in a while

I guess my only complaint is that we all know what’s going to happen to Pike, and Pike knows what’s going to happen to Pike so there’s no real urgency to his character. Whenever he’s in a tough spot, you know he’s not going to die or anything so……

True, but irrelevant. Captain Pike is the main character, and main characters almost never die in TV shows.

I imagine the challenge will be to be creative. I mean, hell, look at Superman TV shows. They're popular as hell and you know full well ol' Supes isn't going anywhere anytime soon. It's more interpersonal drama that keeps people paying attention. That, and just a gorgeous fucking ship. Damn.
