    Very true.

At the same time, a Picard less TNG after "The Best of Both Worlds II" would probably not have been any worse quality wise.

While the fourth season of TNG was quite good, the quality of the series overall really started to plummet from about the middle of the 5th season onward.

Killing off Picard could've been a great opportunity to give the show a mid run shot in the arm. Perhaps by bringing in a radically different captain with his own way of doing things that many of the crew greatly resent.......but that some members like a great deal. Someone like Jellico from "Chain of Command".

At least Jellico got Troi to wear an actual uniform while on duty (which looked great by the way).

I couldn't disagree more. Q was interesting and a prankster. He was like the equivilant of the Joker except he never really let anyone die. I also loved how annoyed Picard would get with Q even though you do see a bit of curiosity from Picard. They were perfect frenemies. Much like Batman and the Joker. Also, you could tell that in his own way , Q actually cared for humanity.

I know 18 crewpeople who would disagree with you. If they were alive.

Not to mention it was Q who caused the Borg to notice us, resulting in - how many deaths? That entire colony, the personnel killed at Wolf 359...

I think Picard's best character moment was at the end of The Wounded when he told off the Cardassians. Yes, I will follow my orders and do what is best for the Federation and for peace. But I'll be watching you, motherfucker. That tells you what kind of a captain he is - a damn good one who knows the right thing to do, and has steel.

The Borg were already coming. They'd already taken entire Federation and Romulan colonies back in The Neutral Zone. If Q hadn't warned Picard about them when he did, the Federation wouldn't have had any time to prepare at all, and the Borg would have won.

    Q was never a prankster.

Everything Q did was to push humanity along. Every single episode was to teach humans something. This was pretty much confirmed in the last episode of the series. It was sort of a final test of humanity and Picard passed it by being able to think in all three time frames for the solution.

In fact I think this quote from Futurama fits him perfectly:

"When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

Okay, yeah , I agree with that, but it's not to say Q didn't have fun doing those things.

I don't believe the Borg were ever determined to be the cause of, or even implicated in, the destruction of those colonies. To me, it sounded more like the Crystalline Entity. In fact, in "Q Who" Guinan states "since they're aware of your existence". If they had destroyed the human outpost they'd have been aware of humans already.

Agreed. But there's no evidence it was the Borg either.

And if it had been the Borg, why did Q fling them so far away in order to encounter them? Doesn't add up.

Lol, sure, but this isn't Trek asking us to believe something. It's a viewer drawing a conclusion not supported by the available information. It's no big thing, it's just nitpicking Trek. And it's lesser Trek at that. ;)

In "Q Who" Data says flat out that the pattern of destruction in what turns out to be Borg space is identical to that of the neutral zone outposts.

As the writer of the ST:TNG Compedium points out, Guinan and Q might not have known everything about the Borg.

Maybe the first colonies were destroyed by scouts just passing through and sizing up potential targets, while the cube Q dropped the Enterprise in front of was the actual invasion force? :clyde:

He may not have been written as such all of the time but Q was supposed to be omniscient.

All "god like" beings claim that.

If he was omniscient he would never have been outwitted by humans (and decked by Sisko).

    Regarding Q:

I saw "Encounter at Farpoint" the very first time it aired now way back in September of 1987!

The first thought that came to mind that night re: Q was -

    TRELANE

& in 21st Century parlance, Q was Trelane 2.0 or nuTrelane!

    Citing a hyper-cheesy 80s flick:

    Trelane 2: Electric Boogaloo! ;)

You could also think of Q as Trelane on steroids!

That's true. The list of one-star reviews would consist almost entirely of holodeck and Ferengi episodes (and Move Along Home, because I honestly can't remember if that involved a holodeck or not).

TKO did, but left the board before finishing season one :(

I took over ecky's Enterprise reviews, but then my date for boot camp moved up and I got too short on time to sit through that shit again.

One could say the same of Voyager as well. :borg:

TKO started it because she was entirely new to Star Trek, having been the rare unicorn along with Dinner and Meka that found this place through means other than TrekBBS. It would've been interesting to hear the views of the show from someone who hadn't been discussing Trek for most their lives.

That, and to be honest I found that DS9 went all in on their bad episodes, the same as they did for the extraordinary ones. I'm easily one of the most lenient towards the Ferengi episodes on this board, but even I've only been able to sit through Profit and Lace twice.
