I simply cannot wrap my mind on why America thinks that regular mass-murders are an acceptable part of life, simply so people can have easy access to guns. That is beyond me.

But that some Americans not only accept regular mass murders, but think they are funny, is beyond the pale. This takes knee-jerk reactionary thinking to a whole new level, where innocent people getting murdered regularly is actually part of the entertainment.

I hang my head in shame at the thought that I used to support Republicans.

Gun violence is as American as apple pie. Some white kid goes down town with a gun and shoots a bunch of people. Half the country says it's horrible, how did it happen, it mustn't happen again. The other half of the country says Y'all ain't never takin mah guns. Life goes on. The next angry white kid shows up and the cycle repeats. Sometimes a white guy shoots up a place. Therefore we should consider all white guys with guns to be potential mass shooters and ban private ownership of guns. It's just common sense.

Sometimes a muslim commits a mass casualty attack in the name of their religion. But we mustn't assume all muslims are terrorists because we shouldn't paint with a broad brush like that and profiling is wrong. It's just common sense.

Sometimes a christian priest engages in sexual abuse of minors, therefore we should think all christian priests are pervs. It's just common sense.

Sometimes an entire religious sect believes that women are chattel property who should never be allowed out in public without a male relative as escort and must cover themselves head to toe in thick clothing because reasons. But we must honor their cultural norms and not object to this. It's just common sense.

Sometimes humans are a savage tribal species prone to violence at any provocation and also engage in mass warfare against any tribe that dares to hold beliefs that are wrong. But viewing humanity with contempt is wrong because a handful of the baboons manage something nice once in a while.

So the question to those defending the current form of gun rights in the US is this: How many innocent people murdered are an acceptable corollary to your right to have easy access to guns? And would you be you willing to say this to the victims' families?

I wouldn't paint with such a broad brush. There are some very reasonable defenders of gun rights on the board (Elwood and Shoes come to mind). I would honestly be interested in hearing their answers to these questions.
