You probably made the better call. Which reminds me, I better get on it and watch the first two episodes.
GUYS!! I think this might be my favorite Batman movie. I’m going to have to watch The Dark Knight again and I’ll see but wow!! I really like the gritty realness of this iteration. I like The Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman… it’s easy to see how they evolve to become who they are… I didn’t expect to like this movie at all but damn! They did a great job!
The only thing I don’t like is he takes some serious beatings and just walks them off a little too easily and he gets shot multiple times and it barely phases him. Even if his suit is Kevlar, it should be knocking him back a little. I can suspend disbelief for the sake of the movie, but these two things need to be addressed in the sequel, IMO.
Got my third viewing in yesterday. Still lovin' it (mostly). It's not going to surpass The Dark Knight, but it a worthy new take on Batman.
1989 Tim Burton Batman is still the best. It's like 1977's Star Wars. You were either alive and old enough to understand the profound effect it had on movies, or you're just reading history. 1989's Batman was ground-breaking for the superhero genre, even moreso in pop culture than 1979's Superman was. I know this because I lived through all of them. Is The Dark Knight a great film? Absolutely. Is it the best Batman film? Nope.
Saw it last night. It's really good, highly enjoyable but just didn't have the same je ne sais pas type thing Dark Knight had. The most obvious things that are better off the top of my head are Hans Zimmer's score in TDK vs the music in The Batman and The Joker was by far a better villain But man, still a great movie. Loved it
I saw Superman in 1979, in the theater. I was in college when the Tim Burton Batman movie came out, and I remember how excited I and everyone else was because it looked to us like Hollywood was finally going to be taking comic book movies seriously. I missed seeing it in the theater, but as soon as it came out, I and a buddy rented it on VHS. We popped it in, and when we saw Michael Keaton on the roof, flapping his arms and hissing in the Batsuit, my friend turned, looked at me and said, "You know, this looked pretty cool on the big screen, but on the small screen, this looks lame as fuck." Maybe the movie did start to convince the studios that comic book movies could make money. It did, after all, inspire a whole bunch of sequels, the TMNT movies, and other comic book movies. But calling it "great" is like calling the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials that inspired Star Wars "great." They're not. They can be a fun ride at times, but they also have stupid plots, insane acting, and bad special effects at times.
Watched it tonight. JFC it's a long-ass movie. For me the last hour was good, but the first two hours could've used some trimming. I liked the first two Nolan films better than this one by a pretty wide margin. John Turturro is always great and so is Jeffrey Wright. And Paul Dano dressed up in all his Riddler gear is nowhere near as scary and creepy-looking as Paul Dano's actual face.
That's one of the reasons I like this movie so much. The fight choreography in this movie is amazing and the multiple hits and shots Batman took gave me a sense of risks for him. He's not just an overpowered weirdo in a suit, but he's a flawed person out there taking real risks to inflict pain on a group of people who hurt him a long time ago. It's not until the end that he realizes that his true role is to make this city a better place, IMHO. Hell, Batman is risking so much to accomplish his goals that he gets into multiple conflicts with the police. Corrupt cops or not, that's pretty much how it would go for any vigilante. The Penguin, Catwoman, The Riddler... they all seemed like real people moved by real circumstances but they resort to extremely risky behavior to get things done. Even the Riddler's understated military surplus type outfit just worked for me.
Ok, I saw this and I came out of it liking it, but I have some problems with it. First off, why is batman batman? Being no one is wearing costumes outside of halloween and the movie made sure we knew that, is batman a furry or something? Why is he the only costume dude around? I agree with the cops when they are wondering who the freaky furry guy is in the mask, and why is he on the crime scene? We have an asylum, and here is a crazy dude in a bat costume who seems to be connected to the crime spree, maybe we get him in for an observation period? I did like the car chase, and the fact the penguin (why is he the fucking penguin again?) followed my advice and wrecked everyone on the highway like I would have done to fuck the guy up behind me. However, is batman driving around the General Lee painted black? That was a very dukes of hazard move he did to get out of that. The batmobile is just a regular old car with a lightshow on the back of it. Dude has video recording contact lenses and it does not even have a turbo boost button on it to activate the jet engine. Why is catwoman catwoman? She has a kitty cat ski mask she wears while robbing people, and she likes milk and cats? I am beginning to realize the goofy backstories are there for a fucking reason. She is just a burglar who accessorizes with cat things. The names don't really mean anything when there is no backstory to them. Even Bruce dressing like a bat seems extremely out of place without the backstory of bat psychosis. The movie should have ended before the action based climax. Lots of things in the movie could have been cut. Why did we even need the penguin in it? His chase scene was great, but it was a poorly placed lark. I know why batman is chasing him and I am still wondering why we have the chase scene at all except to throw a chase scene in the movie. Did we need the end of the movie at all? They really tacked the end on with spit and duct tape because where did all those bad guys come from? You had huge crime syndicates working throughout the city and you still had to pull all those enemies out of your ass for a tacked on second climax? I really would have been fine had they just ended it when they found the riddler. There were parts I really liked. I really like Rober pattinson as the batman. I thought he was going to be too emo in the beginning with the voiceover straight out of watchmen. I actually loved that he was scared doing batrman things like jumping off of buildings. He actually seemed like a spoiled rich kid who wanted to do good who was in over his head in a few areas. They actually bounced him off some things, and even though I knew no one would survive what he did, he pulled off looking like he could be hurt. I do not know why he is batman, but I like his batman. I did like selena, but not as "catwoman." She had a really good character, and the half good and bad of catwoman made sense, but she wasn't all cat like. The only part of batman that seemed essential to this was the wayne family backstory. I am glad they did not retell all of that, but they did need to tie in some of the character names to their characters better. If you altered a few things this really could have been a better crow movie. It was dark, gothic, and brutal. I liked the movie, but it did not need to be batman, and the batman elements were silly in a movie like this.
The movie had some major flaws, but it was done so well I had to like it. I would still rate The Dark Knight better because that came together so well in it's universe. Batman dressing like a bat did not take me out of that movie, where in this one I needed that part of the backstory to be explained for this batman because he was so different. You can get away with not telling the killing of the parents and referencing his growing up and learning combat. I think the defining event that twists batman to do the bat thing becomes a needed part of the psychology of batman. I guess they could retcon it for a sequel and that would be a good surprise for the sequel. But even with the other villains I want a backstory of why the penguin is the penguin. I know cats are cool, but shouldn't selena have something more to do with cats? Was she even catwom, or was there just the suggestion of her being catwoman? I guess that is a bit of my problem. All the other characters are suggestions of their comic book characters without the backstory. So why is batman wearing an actual bat costume? He was more like flying squirrel man. There was too much bat to batman if you are just going to have this more realistic story.
I agree with @Diacanu that the makers of "THE BATMAN" sequel(s) should leave Joker in Arkham Asylum. Batman literally has a ROGUES GALLERY of villains & super villains that could be used & explored in the sequel(s). And "THE BATMAN" in my opinion is a GREAT MOVIE.
I hope they let us know why he is so into bats because he is really seeming like the first furry superhero. I hope they keep going down this road. Batman goes to the gotham furry convention and finds 2 kids. One is a young boy who thinks he has the spirit of the robin, and a little girl who also thinks she is a bat, and they form a little furry crime fighting commune. We could have sub villains like Mr. freeze who is a doctor who really likes ice cream and gets a lot of brain freezes. Poison Ivy could be some sort of hippie nature chick who had to go to Mr. Freeze because she got a rash from poison ivy while hiking. Instead of having all the villains come from a mob owned bar where they all had nicknames that meant nothing they could all have it go around mr. freeze's doctor's office. He could have a patient with chemical burns on half his face from a bad chemical peel. Maybe some guy who has a bad LSD trip and he could be scarecrow. Meanwhile everything that is going wrong is actually the joker who has escaped from the asylum. I never thought I would actually want more crazy in batman, but they need to get with the over the top villains before this shit becomes more of a series of law and order: The batman unit.
I thought "Batman Begins" covered that well enough. Even though it's a different timeline, I assume a lot of the same things happened across timelines. Like his parents getting shot.
This is a reboot so things could be different, and clearly there are differences from that timeline because selena and albert. So we can't just assume he got stuck in a well with some bats. He does not have a morgan freeman. So he could still be a furry because they have not referenced any childhood bat trauma or any reason he is the only one wearing this elaborate costume for no fucking reason. Why does he have to cosplay to fight crime when a simple and more functional mask will do.
I watched it this past weekend. Definitely far too long. There's elements of a really good Batman film in there, but it's hampered by the fact that it's three fucking hours long. And not in a good Avengers: Endgame way... More like a mind-numbing Lord of the Rings: Holy Hell When is Return of the King Going to End way. Some tighter editing would greatly improve the movie.
