Manchin seems intent on killing the climate change portions of the bill.

    https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/15/politics/clean-electricity-program-cut-budget-bill-climate/index.html

Of course he would. He founded a coal brokerage, which he gave to his son and who is still running it. The coal company paid him personally nearly half a million dollars in 2020, the last year of financial disclosure.

The biggest problem we have among politicians is conflict of interest over stocks, and it's widespread. There were hundreds of cases of this kinds of maleasance in the federal judiciary, where judges were ruling directly on cases they had financial conflicts on. We've simply stopped caring.

The level of corruption in our government is astounding.

And now Manchin is indicating he's willing to walk, to go independent if he doesn't get his way on the Build Back Better bill.

And he'll be just fine doing so, as it is widely considered he won't be running again. Even if he did, he's largely bigger than either party in WV.

And if doesn't caucus with the Dems, then we once again have Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Manchin and the bitch from Arizona need to go to a different party. They are not Democrats, they just don't like trump. Fuck them both.

I'd love them to be irrelevant as soon as possible, but the earliest that can be is 2022.

In the meantime, I'd rather have some of the infrastructure bill and BBB than none of it.

And I'd rather have the ability to get Democratic judges appointed.

And I'd like the chairmen of the Senate committees not to be picked by Mitch McConnell determining what even gets a vote in committee.

And I really, really don't want McConnell to be able to shelf every single piece of legislation passed up from the House without a vote.

The Build Back Better bill is overwhelmingly popular in West Virginia. But Joe Manchin knows better than his constituents. So if he decides to caucus with the Republicans he would have gone from supporting a 4 trillion dollar bill to supporting nothing. The smaller infrastructure bill will be off the table with Turtle McConnell in charge.

That's a bit misleading. They get paid when they move a load. It's the sitting around waiting part that's "free" labor.

If a job requires you to be in a location and on immediate call, you are on the job. Especially for folk like telephone operatives who might even be restricted in the amount of pee-breaks they can have lest they miss a call.

Not only that, but a lot of freight companies have a "no touch" policy concerning drivers and cargo. I believe it's for both safety and liability concerns.

Those two statements are not in opposition. They move a load, they get paid. They sit waiting, they don't. "Free" labor.

No, because I'm being paid based on my time, not my output. Whether I work one web page a day or twenty (plus all the other shit I deal with every day) I get paid for the time I'm in the building. The truckers' situation would be like if I was being tracked per line of code or something, and was only getting paid for each </> I got to.
Look, don't misinterpret what I said. These guys are still getting shafted, but since they're apparently independent contractors as opposed to a salaried workforce, it is what it is.

Are they waiting for a blue light special at K-Mart? They are "at work" and waiting.

It sure seems like they have to wait in line though, unlike, say, taxis at an airport stand, where no one requires them to wait. That’s a claim on their time, and should be compensated.

And arguing otherwise is like saying that a receptionist should have to clock out anytime they're at the front desk because that's where they're required to be, but they're not answering a phone call or dealing with a walk-in customer right this exact minute.

Again, I'm not disputing that. But Anc's post (#76) implies that these drivers are doing their thing for free, and that is only partially true. That's all I'm saying.

Anc's post (#76) literally contains the words "they're paid", explicitly saying that drivers are only partially doing their thing for free.
