I'm an hour-and-a-half into it and, frankly, it's a hell of a slog already. There's some good new bits but there's also a lot of really unnecessary extraneous stuff. Plus, it's just too weighted down by its own self-importance. This scene is important because a bunch of Icelandic ladies are going to sing a melancholy song. Now Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are going to sing a melancholy song because this other scene is IMPORTANT and you should feel stuff. Anyway, I read somewhere that this film is better watched in chunks. I'm going to try to tackle the next hour-and-a-half tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Black Nerd Comedy said if you liked the theatrical cut, you'll probably like this better, if you hated the theatrical cut you'll almost definitely like it better, but if you hate the whole Snyder-verse, this won't turn you around.
I deliberately only watched half (via alternative means) of it because it's an appointment watch with my sons likely this weekend but what I have seen, the first hour and a half is much more of a slog then what comes after. I actually am hoping that HBOM has a 2x feature so I can save myself those unnecessarily long scenes.
One of my friends calls Snyder's films the Murderverse, because his version of the heroes definitely don't have the no killing rule that almost all versions of DC main heroes try to abide by. Well, except for parademons and Steppenwolf, almost no villains were killed in the making of the Snyder cut. Diana explodes the head terrorist guy in her initial scene and I want to say that's about it.
Other than Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, I think most of the DC films have been pretty bad misfires. The Nolan Batman films also were decent (except for the final one) but IMO The Dark Knight is overrated.
He didn't use anything that Whedon filmed. So no homage to Supes at the beginning (with the bad cgi removing Cavill's beard), no Batman being comic relief for being human, the fight scene at the Superman monument is considerably different as well as how it was resolved, and the final fight is vastly different, getting rid of the Russian bystanders that have to be saved. It's not that Whedon's viewpoint was bad there per se, IMO, it just didn't fit, because in tone it was so totally different. If the entire run had been done by him it would probably have been better received, because it was more light hearted. But Snyder is on record saying that he didn't want to compete with Marvel in the 'action-comedy with a heart' theme. He wanted it to stand out as a discourse on mythology. IMO, he largely succeeded there, but clearly opinions vary.
Shazam was fun, but it suffered from too-many-characters-itis. The first movie should not have included any other of the Marvel family and I personally would have preferred not to kitbash Sivana and IBAC into the same character.
Agreed I will even go as far to say that Man of Steel is bar none the best Superman film made to date
My discomfort with Snyder's vision is mainly in that historically DC has always been (apart from some eras, but not all, of Batman) the bright shiny well lit brightly colored unrealistically upbeat (somehow, even when the fate of the universe was at stake) publisher. For most of my lifetime if you wanted a darker, moody, commentary on the hero mythology you mostly wanted Marvel. Toneally it's such an outlier to me that it's always floating there in the corner of my mind like a rock in my shoe
Well, I just listened to Black Nerd Comedy's spoiler review, and...it sounds like Justice League is a weird mess with weird messy flaws whichever cut you watch. I'll probably get the physical disk release for the collection. I own fuckin' Fan4stic, and I'm gonna get Wonder Woman 1984, so I got no excuse to avoid this one.
Just over halfway through now and it's marginally improved. The story and action are finally coming together. Only took 2.5 hours to get going. I doubt at this stage that anything will happen that will change my opinion of the film. As of now, I'd rate in the 5 to 6 out of 10 range. My short, three-word review: A missed opportunity.
I'll admit, my enthusiasm had dwindled, but I'm listening to the score on YT, and...holy shit, that score!! Yeah, I'm pumped for it again. I can't wait for the disk release. I ain't buying HBOMax.
Course you know, even though Snyder Cut is out there....this will never be over. Phantom Menace is 22 years old now, and people still haven't gotten over it. People are gonna get in fist fights over Snyder vs Whedon 'til the end of time.
I finally finished it this afternoon. What a slog. Definitely rating it a solid 5/10. It has some decent bits, but I would probably crash the board if I tried to post a list of everything wrong with this film. Of note, it definitely beats Return of the King for the most false endings in movie history.
Watched it this morning, overall I liked it better than the original cut. Some parts of it were a bit drawn out, but it didn't really feel like four hours. The story did feel fuller than the original cut, more background on the characters along with the story. There were some scenes missing though, most notably the family being saved by Flash and Supes saving the rest of the family, there may have been other missing scenes but I didn't notice them, And I though the aspect ratio would bother me, but there is more picture to see in some of the scenes. The letterbox is zoomed in on the 3:4 ratio, so while it is more of a square, you see more in the frame. Other scenes zoom in on the letterbox to get the 3:4 ratio. Some screen shots are below, I used this part because it was the easiest to reference between the two versions. I only picked up on the difference on the aspect ratios during this part of the movie, the rest I really didn't notice as I got used to the aspect ratio.
Steppenwolf as he appeared in Jack Kirby's New Gods. Apparently the Steppenwolf in the movie is from the Earth 2 version?
All I know is, the Steppenwolf in the Joss Whedon version looked like crap, which was only accentuated by the bad CGI. The Steppenwolf in the Zack Snyder version is shiny with spiky armor and less of a CGI eyesore.
I dunno, I found that spiky armor constantly fluttering and changing pretty annoying. Like, extra CGI for CGI's sake. Look what we can do! Distracting.
The Whedon version looks like it came from a bad fan film version of Lord of the Rings. The Snyder version looks shit-your-pants dangerous.
And that's the thing, it's not like they had to create the Whedon version out of thin air with no guide, they had the one from the deleted scene in BvS that was in the extended cut by the time JL 1.0 was in production.
On the writer: "From the writer who sharted out The Rise of Skywalker." On the choice of the IMAX format (which means there are black bars on widescreen televisions): "I think he just liked to have the bars. It added more darkness to every scene, right? That's free darkness right there, baby!" That's gotta be one of their top Honest Trailers.
Well, I liked this! I think Man Of Steel is the BEST Superman movie of all time and BvS had some misfires but pretty much, this movie, which was clearly meant to be 2 movies, was the end of a Snyder-verse trilogy. Zack Snyder is probably my favorite action scene director and hands down my favorite comic book movie director but a lot of his work misses because he falls short on narrative beats. This movie didn’t need to be 4 hours long for sure. It took me weeks to get through it all but I’m glad I did.
Debatable. I love Man of Steel but the 1979 Superman will always hold a special place in my heart. In many ways, I don't actually like to compare the films. There's extensive psychotherapy that will probably cure you of that opinion. FTFY.
Wait, really? You like Zack Snyder hands down more than Chris Nolan (Batman Begins/Dark Knight/DKR), the Russo Brothers (Captain America: WS, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame), San Raimi (Spider-Man 1 and 2), Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), among others? Even conceding that he has some good or even great movies, I just don't understand why of all the comic book movie directors he would be someone to consider at the very top.
