For a supposed history major you seemed to have missed a lot of high school history. Not to mention common sense about humans. That was something I recall from history class, and given there were tribes of all sorts I just assumed they participated in territorial battles and many chose to participate rather then be enslaved by the white racist slave traders.

History is a massive field of study. Since you're not demanding that eighth-grade social studies curricula be revised to include the kings of the Rashtrakuta dynasty, the origins of Chinese calligraphy, or courtship practices in medieval France, I can only conclude that your sudden interest in very specific topics stems not from a burning thirst for thoroughness, but from something else.

Pretty sure the only Greek and Roman history, 8th grade and below, learn is in connection with mythology. But, we are in the US, so everything is about religion.

No-one is saying that since they had slaves they were the worst people to have ever lived in history, however it does undermine their position as moral authorities whose words should be treated as gospel, and also serves to provide context for ongoing social inequalities.

That’s what I was waiting for. Someone brings up the founding fathers, usually me and someone else, usually you, says something to the effect of, “you shouldn’t worship them or take their words” or something like that. I don’t worship them and I don’t take their word as gospel. This is the whole reason why I bring up other cultures because I do think context is important. We need to understand that in the 18th century it was common practice and perfectly acceptable to own slaves. We also need to understand that the authors of the constitution and the Declaration of Independence did understand that their words were contradictory. I think Jefferson did d write privately about it. They even made efforts to put an end to it. They could only do so much. We also should understand that other cultures at that same time also had slaves and had little to no thought about their freedom or the freedom of others. Maybe the founding fathers weren’t these evil men that some try and paint them as and maybe the US isn’t the evil country that some try to paint us as. You’ll get no argument from me about misdeeds from the government, but as a whole, I think we do attempt to do good in the world. Is it all altruistic? No, so what? No country is like that.
