Yeah, but last time I was armed and drinking you called me an idiot. (And rightly so, I might add...)
That was the night I got punched in the head by a drag queen, if you remember that thread. Good times.
I've convinced a few women to get away from emotionally/physically abusive boyfriends for completely unselfish reasons. But no opportunities to save a damsel in distress have come up yet.
Yeah, I am a sucker for that kind of stuff. Women with car problems on roadside or stranded, and broken appliances mostly. I try and do the right thing.
I drove forty miles eight o'clock at night to be with a female friend of mine who had put herself in an impossible situation with her boyfriend. She was completely wigged out, crying, all that stuff and I didn't think she should be alone, so I stayed and talked with her until after midnight. And I had to work the next day. But actually physically rescuing a "damsel in distress"? Nope, can't say as I have.
Oh. Fat Tuesday in Chinatown. As things are winding down, there's a decent looking woman, sitting looking very unhappy and only wearing one shoe. So I go over to her and see what is going on. I start to talk to her a bit (of course she's pretty drunk) and her drunk boyfriend/husband shows up with her shoe in his hand, pushing a stroller containing their two year old. Of course he's abusive to me and everyone else. And at this point I don't know anyone there enough to get into a fight that is likely nothing more than too much booze. Besides, there's about a half dozen cops, in skirmisher formation, walking down the street to clear things out. So I walked over to them and gave them a heads up on the situation. Of course they decided to put aside their differences and move on before the cops got there. Sometimes chivalry ain't the way to go.
Couple years ago, someone thought it would be a good idea to randomly come up to my mom and start sexually abusing her. My dad wasn't around at the time(in the store I think)....so it was just me and my mom in an empty parking lot. I almost killed the guy by putting him in a choke hold.....good thing mall security came out and literally ripped me off of him, because at 17 years old, I was both shocked and pissed off at what happened. Turns out the guy was a predator that had been let out of prison a couple days before, and there was a 'warning' out. Cops took him away, and my mom testified in court and he got 15 more years in prison. I was scared. But proud that I held him off.
Good job! But what really impresses me is testifying in court - that's where many people would chicken out. If more people were like your family it would keep more of these fuckers off the streets. BRAVO!
I noticed an interesting unconscious reflex during a fire alarm at work once. One of the girls in the compnay was pregnant, and as we were gathered out in the parking lot in our assigned assembly areas watching the fire dept do their thing (it was a false alarm, btw), I noticed myself and a couple of the other guys had formed a little protective squad around the pregnant girl. Helped her sit on one of the lamppost bases and get comfy, make sure nobody crowds her, kind of stand guard around her. I think it was some kind of natural instinct thet kicked in.
Yeah, one of the cops who dealt with the case told me later on that not many people have the willpower to stand up and testify in court against someone who sexually abused them. I still hold my mom in awe because of that.
Come to think of that, I've seen that happen a few times before. But not all 'males'....are like that. I've seen a few who would look after themselves first rather than help a pregnant woman. Good on you for doing that though. Stories like these give me hope that there is still a chance for mankind.
My only real claim to fame is once I performed mouth to mouth and cpr on my best friends preemie child. He was only about ten weeks old (I think) and was born ten weeks premature. One night, he stopped breathing, she started screaming, I told to call 911, and then started "baby" mouth to mouth, and cpr. Ambulance guys said I probably saved the little guys life.
I think CPR should be one of the things taught constantly during high school. And required to graduate.
At a lot of schools it IS part of the Wellness/Personal Fitness requirements for graduation. It was part of our curriculum.
So do I. But also wish that nurses and doctors would bomb the American Heart Association. They keep changing CPR training and requirements, basically to keep raking in money and justify their existence.
