People used to do that at my work up until last year. now that is all gone and we are all on the work til you die plan.

Well 55 is not too old. I'd be quite bored. Being that I'm close to that age and still go to nightclubs and play basketball and chase women.

Maybe he's going on to a second career. Or maybe he's a broken down old man.

Theoretically he could start his own small business now or switch to some career he always wanted to do but never could financially justify. Do it until he gets bored of it then either sell the business or quit.
