And leading Trump around on a nose ring continues: https://edition.cnn.com/2018/06/02/...it-planning-kim-jong-un-hotel-room/index.html You know, it's not a problem to foot such a bill even when you are North Korea. Or not pay at all. It's just another power play. You wanna talk to us? You pay up! Donny Small Hands will be in for a nasty surprise. He wants to go into the history books? Well... he will. But not as he imagines.
Trump seems to be the kind of guy who believes he's solved world hunger if a third world despot invites him to dinner.
Hey, NK is talking about opening a Burger King (accessible only to Party Elites, I'm sure). That's what amounts to high-level diplomacy in Il Douche's regime.
Though very insignificant, it’s a small step in the right direction. Rome wasn’t built in a day and the fall of communism didn’t happen in a day either.
Thanks to pot related digital Beanie Babies, Dennis Rodman is winging his way to Singapore to help with the negotiations.
Seems as if Trump and Kim Jong-un hit it off. Trump showed him a video he and his crew made. A remake of a Christmas Carol from the sounds of it. We promised to give up the saber rattling with S Korea (no more war games, were they fun, or what?). Did anything else happen?
That's all I've heard. Presumably, the lower-level officials who were there discussed other matters and we'll be hearing about those shortly.
I'm perfectly prepared to accept Trump showering scumbags like Kim with compliments about how honorable and clever he is in order to make peace, as long as it's understood to be simply an unpleasant expedient. I'm not sure that Trump understands that though. It's at least as likely that he means all of that stuff.
So it has pretty much been a complete and total failure for the US. Trump has committed us to never, ever again practicing working with the South Korean military in exchange for...? Actually it seems Trump ridiculously gave that major concession in exchange for nothing because he is an idiot. There was absolutely no indication Trump was achieving his stated goal of a denuclearized Korea while Kim played him like the fool he is and got just about everything he wanted.
No he hasn't. He made some remark about stopping the wargames, which apparently he hadn't agreed with his staff beforehand. That doesn't really commit to anything, least of all what you're claiming.
The purpose of this whole thing was for Kim to get a few seconds of video of him meeting Trump on equal terms and shaking hands, to be replayed continuously on state media: “Look how mighty and important Glorious Leader is! Even the President of the United States comes to seek his advice!” Mission accomplished.
The headline that I see is "Donald Trump says US to stop 'war games' with South Korea". If you think that means "never, ever again practicing working with the South Korean military" then you should stop drinking.
It's been pretty surreal walking about Singapore and seeing NK and US flags side by side. Also big props to Trump for undermining his own negotiations here by establishing with Iran that any agreements could just be ripped up by the next president anyway.
^If so, then also special kudos to Obama for ensuring that any future-nuke-giver-upper can reasonably expect to be exterminated by the US after giving up their nukes. Iran was a shit agreement for the US but Iran earned a buckload of graft and profit for their troubles (including help by Obama circumventing sanction-restrictions on access to banks); plus anyway Congress said "no," despite Obama's team lying to Congress.
It's amazing how much right wing Americans like to throw whataboutisms concerning Obama when the prevalent feeling overseas is "Yeah, he did didn't he".
You raised the valid point that the future expectations of foreign despots will be guided by recent history of similar situations, it's pretty fuckin relevant. And the US doesn't tear up actual treaties, although we *do* flush what is clearly shit down the bowl, apparently (or at least we might if the pres is named Trump). A good lesson in fact, and hopefully cautionary for the next Obamawannabe, that a crap "deal" failing to achieve even the most basic objectives can be quickly repudiated by the next dude.
Alternative narrative: “Our nuclear bomb has brought the Americans to their knees! Trump arrives to beg for mercy!”
The Iranians didn't even need a nuclear bomb. That said people claim that North Korea having a nuclear weapon means the U.S. isn't willing to take military action against them are being ignorant. Even without nuclear weapons, the U.S. wasn't going to initiate military action against the North Koreans due to their artillery and conventional missile threat against Seoul, South Korea and the 25 million civilians there, including 100,000 Americans.
The situations are not comparable. No American president has met one-on-one with a leader of Iran, and the internal pressures on Kim to propagandize and exaggerate his power and importance are unmatched by any other country, even Iran.
That said the Iranians have killed a lot more Americans than the North Koreans have in recent years? Wasn't something like 2-3000 of the U.S. troops killed in Iraq over the years at the hands of insurgents (or whatever they call them) sponsored by Iran?
Sorry I didn't realise that Obama still had a role in government and was part of the current negotiations and decision making. I'm used to systems where a new government taking over means they actually take over.
You do know that literally thousands upon thousands of people appointed by the past president carry over to the next administration for a good period of time? Especially one that was in power for eight years.
The optics of American flags and North Korean flags flying together would have been appalling to the entire American electorate up until about a year and a half ago. Trump takes over and the Republican half loses its goddamned mind.
