No, when people want to bring up an asshole who also happens to be conservative, they bring up Burns. Winchester was conservative, yes, but he was also kind, compassionate, and willing to put his money where his mouth was. Burns is just an asshole who adheres to conservativism and its pseudo-religiosity, but knows nothing of it beyond that which he hates. He is the face of the modern GOP.

    Then pray for them.

Would that be before or after you tell the majority of them that they're inferior to Americans and pine for major military actions that kill thousands of them?

Sixteen years of Catholic education, including theology courses, and I've actually read the Bible in its entirety.

More to the point, the Golden Rule is not exclusive to Christianity.

Lastly, you've yet to explain how your attitude jibes with Christian practices and doctrine.

As a courtesy I'll try to answer your poi.nts in order, honestly

    1) I do.

    2) I was referring to people I have direct contact with and thus presumably some direct influence over (for better or worse of course).

But I have heavily supported monetarily foreign mission work to convert nonAmericans to Christianity.

    3) Good for you.

    4) I know that. I have a page in my scrapbook which shows the commonalities of the Golden Rule and more than a dozen other religions and philosophies.

    5) I don't recall the verse but it does say in the Bible

"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling".

Philippians 2:12. Even Paul said your own salvation. That doesn't entitle you to dictate to anyone else.

And what if working out your own salvation dictates that you try to convince as many others as possible of the errors of their ways?

You then have an obligation to do so.

What bothers you so much about "dictating to anyone else"?

It isn't like I'm using force or advocating the use of force.

this flows from the SORT of capitalism that has been manifest in their experience. Much like that generation is moving away from religion in droves because the prominent manifestation of organized religion looks like a right wing political asshole.

there's a marked difference between attempting to counsel, and using the force of law to compel obedience. Right wing political Pharisees are all about the latter, not the former.

Well, Winchester made have been an arrogant windbag, but he was not stupid or incompetent like you and most of the right wing. It would be nice if the right were to model after the intelligent elite instead of pretending stupid an uneducated are admirable.

In The Mystery of Capital Hernando de Soto dives into why 'capitalism' has such a dirty name in Latin America. Basically, they've never had actual capitalism, only cronyism and corporatism that is packaged as capitalism.

    Same goes for Millennials. :bergman:

Actually, when you make it law you are advocating for the use of the force of the state to make others comply. It is the work of a coward who sends others to do their dirty work.

The police strip the freedom and rights from people who smoke a little pot in their own home because people like you advocate dictating others behavior using the force of the state. Women have to bring babies to term because you use the state to remove abortion options. People want to make abortion illegal and punish women for choosing not to have a child and it is to punish them for having sex. You use the state as your force, and being arrested and jailed is far more force than you are capable of on your own you cowardly ferret faced shit.

Why would you think Winchester was a conservative, even by early 50s standards? Given his implied familial ties (Emersons), history of consorting with bohemians, ignoring class barriers to friendships, and frequent realizations of the privilege he'd grown up with obliging him to help others, he was in many ways more progressive than Hawkeye.

Because if children and life mattered the anti abortion people would want food and medical programs for all. They would not support war and would support banning guns. They would actually care about the welfare of the born. Instead they actually support damaging and life threatening policies. When you add in the about shaming and their views on pre martial sex you see children are gods punishment for sin and they only want to make sure women cannot escape it through abortion or birth control.

Winchester was conservative in the way he lived his own life, but compassionate and decent. Frank Burns was a rigid, authoritarian, not particularly bright, hypocritical ass.

In other words, Winchester was an Eisenhower Republican, and Burns was a modern one.

That is pure ignorance on every level.

Sometimes wars are necessary. Sometimes guns are necessary. And why is supporting federal programs for people and indicator of how much you care about life and children? The liberal progressive matra. If the federal government is not doing something then it isn't getting done.

Wars kill people and are anti life. You cannot be pro life and pro war because war kills people. It is what it does. Guns are specifically designed to kill. You may use it to open your beer but it is made for killing people. That is not to mention statistically the more guns you have the more deaths you have even if you only count accidents and suicides. Again, you cannot be pro gun and pro life as guns are designed to end life. Government programs that feed and give medicine to the poor who cannot afford it save lives and make people healthier. Charity does not cover all of it and the programs the government have are important to the survival of millions of people every day. You can bitch about why the government has to do it, but that's does not change the reality those programs save lives. Without them people would die of hunger and sickness. Removing them directly leads to death and that is a fact. So those programs are actually pro life, something the religious right anti abortion fascists are not.

Sorry ferret face, but you are totally wrong. Pro life means being pro life. It means you cannot support death. You may support war and guns for your purposes, but that means you are not actually pro life. Find another label asshole, and stop trying to pretend you are on a noble path you are not capable of following. Oh, and I do hope you meet Jesus some day and see his weeping at who you are, and what you have done.
