in that case you might want to make them a little heavier, have the weight eat a bit of the recoil

The recoil on the AR platform is so low its not really an issue even for them. The problem they have is the ability to hold the carbine with out having to use a bench rest.

Excellent. I'm sure you're aware that Baer recommends that as the "break in" period. Do not disassemble it or otherwise tamper with it until you've fired those rounds. Also, go ahead and buy one of those Nylon barrel bushing wrenches. The barrel bushing on my two Baers is a BITCH to get off and on. It's the single biggest PITA on all of my guns.

It's the same with my Gilesified Colt. Not only do I need the wrench to turn the bushing, I have to beat it out of the slide to get it off*.

*Nothiing phallic about that last sentence. No Siree.

I've always been the guy that used the right tool for the job. Yeah, I can turn the barrel bushing with my fingers on most of my 1911's, but dad taught me to use a wrench. So, I do.

It's just an extra level of pain in the ass to work on the Baers.

Is a pencil barrel like a pencil skirt?

Think about it: Both get you fired at banks if you bring them to work.

True, it's a pain...but when you marry that kind of tolerance with reliability, you've struck gold IMHO.

Dont know about a pencil skirt. The pencil barrel is a thinner barrel, like the one found on the M16A1. The barrel heats up quicker but cools off quicker than the heavier M16A2 barrel. The thicker M16A2 barrel can be traced to ONE USMC officer (Col I think). He is the one that wanted the thicker barrel based on his experience with precision long distance match shooting. Yeah that has a while lot of application in combat shooting

I know that if I was stuck in a remote outpost in Afghanistan facing 200 Taliban running up the side of the hill, more metal would have a combat use: absorbing heat.

At least I think it would.

Yeah but the lighter metal cools faster and is lighter when ever ounce counts. Like I said, the idea behind the need for the thicker barrel was based on the opinion of one jarhead who was a competitive long distance shooter. There really was no need for it. But on the service rifles the current barrel wont go away. Yeah the M203s need the thinner portion to connect to but the AN/PVS-14s (night vision) are designed to use the thicker barrel.
