Why does Ted want to legalize prostitution?

Prostitution should be legal in any society purporting to respect individual rights. There's no escaping this conclusion, and no consideration should be given to whether the voting majority approves or is offended by it.

The prospects of slavery and exploitation are separate and distinct subjects, to be dealt with in a very narrow fashion, without falling back on a lazy-minded "shotgun" approach that prohibits any activity that could possibly lead to them.

My view on prostitution is this: legalize it, tax it, require that it be done in a licenced brothel, require regular medical exams, but still go hard on streetwalkers (like ten years in prison for streetwalking). Any woman that wants to turn tricks can do it in a brothel. Pimps get prison time if they don't comply with the above.

In the US, prostitution was never actually made illegal in any given jurisdiction until it became a serious public health issue. Only then were moralists able to keep it illegal.
