It also doesn't necessarily prevent conception, if you're creative enough.

Don't overexert yourself. This is Ramen. Yanno, this guy-> :ramen:

Ninety-nine percent of what he posts is to be taken not at all seriously. Just :pathead: and move on. Then evenflow will 'splain to you that Ramen's really very intelligent, and when he occasionally allows that 1% to shine through you should have more respect.

But evenflow says we have to take Ramen more seriously.

It surprises me that @Elwood of all people can't even bother reading an actual "counseling" document that includes provisions such as:

"That the abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique human being."
    and
"That the pregnant woman has an existing relationship with that unborn human being..."

He never used to be among the party of "never let an opinion be thwarted by facts."

The disinformation also states that the existing relationship is Constitutionally protected. Who will stand up for these lies and agree they should be presented as fact to a woman seeking an abortion?

I'm hoping @Elwood's response will be a bit more dignified than "I don't live in SD, not my problem, States Rights, blah-blah-blah."

Maybe he just won't revisit the thread.

In regards to saying "why can't abortion be treated like a gall bladder operation". It seems pretty obvious. Tens of millions of Americans (probably more) do not see a gall bladder operation as inherently immoral and thus not subject to individual choices.

Personally I think that government should discourage elective abortions even if they cannot (or should not) be banned outright. The govt. already spends millions of dollars trying to discourage people from eating or drinking a vast number of things (not even mentioning tobacco use) all of which are individual choices as well.

Tens of millions of Americans (probably more) see Conservative politics (and your way of thinking) as inherently immoral and thus not subject to individual choices.

Personally I think The People should discourage elective conservative opinions and voting even if they cannot (or should not) be banned outright. The People already loses trillions of dollars due to Conservative legislation stealing from The People and giving it to the wealthy.

Tobacco use is one of the most blatantly hypocritical things about American government and that's saying a lot. Tobacco got in with the DuPont carpet company eighty years ago to get hemp/mj banned, lied about the effects of smoking for decades afterwards and are even now placing all kinds of roadblocks for FDA aproval on vaping.

That bullshit sin tax on cigs is just that, and does fuck all to discourage any one of quitting. Those living near the borders of New York will just cross over to the next state over and buy 'em there, and that's about it.

^ My point is that the govt. has a long history of interferring with individual choices if they believe a social good is at issue.

As Anna has stated, these efforts have not gone well.

Taxing and warning seems about the best government can do. The worst is outlawing.

Please define "social good." I see a social good from allowing cheap convenient abortion. The alternative is to restrict it to the rich (as they will always have access). Restriction gives rise to the behavior this thread is about. This is not good.

The health and economic benefits to abortion are many. The sociological benefits depend on the individual; in my experience those that are deeply religious can be harmed psychically by abortion: they should choose wisely.

Back when the world was 4000 people strong and most people didn't live past forty, rules in the Abrahamic religious texts about homosexuality made sense, like those in the Torah against pork consumption.

Today, in the age of fertility treatments and longer lifespans and a shift in society on marriage in general....not so much.

Why reject tradition out of hand.

Before you tear down a wall, you need to understand why the wall was put up in the first place.

The better question is why not question its relevance? You fail to address the issue of Prohibition--something that was done "For the good of society" but that gave rise to black market operations that most drug lords today could only dream of before it got repealed...and is probably more responsible for the binge mentality people now have with booze than if we'd just left well enough alone and treated adults like fucking adults.

In regards to prohibition, no doubt it caused lots of problems.

But be honest legalized alcohol's legacy is a very bad one in the U.S. at best.

Just looking at the hundreds of thousands of people killed by drunk drivers over the decades being one example (including a solid percentage of them completely innocent).

Or the thousands of rapes, murders and other crimes involving perfectly legal alcohol.

And IIRC, organized crime existed BEFORE and AFTER prohibition.

Finally, take a long hard look at prohibition. At best it was only loosely enforced with unbelievable loopholes that themselves encouraged criminal conduct and loss of respect for law and order (Walgreens, booze cruises.....)

 the point went whizzing over your head, which surprises no one.

People get hit and killed by careless drivers on a regular basis. I'd wager there are more minor collisions over texting and driving than booze. How many people are killed by those 18 wheel trucker that fell asleep behind the wheel? I drive a tiny car, so I pay particular attention to those lot lat at night.

Rape, murder and other crime still happens with or without booze. In fact, many other countries that can outdrink even our Navy has overall lower crime rates, including the U.K.

Yes, organized crime exised and still does--but I seem them as a symptom of the disease. If every drug in the world became legal and we banned, say, ice cream, the kingpins would simply switch to black market ice cream trade.

    Wow, you don't say?
Oh shit. I guess you did say that. But then, you never had a problem exploiting loopholes to get people to shut up.

    Vehicle accidents do happen anyway.

But IIRC year to year roughly HALF involve alcohol. That runs about 20,000 killed each year give or take.
