One junkie at a time. It's better than doing nothing and letting your shit get stolen just so you can take pride in what a non-violent person you are. Yelling at them is nothing. They will just come back. An 80 year old man is not going to wrestle some crank head to the ground.
I just heard the exact Georgia law on the radio talk show. The intruder only has to be on your property. Hey, the guy is 83 years old. Last week an 81 year old was BEATEN TO DEATH by a young person. Should he confront/detain burglars? Seriously, this is why we need gun control.... he should have controlled his aim to hit her in the head, not the neck. old people
What part don't you get?/ If the guy is in your house or in the process of breaking in...blast away. If he is in the yard...hold ya fire. If you can scare him off the property, that's what you should do rather than shoot to kill. Very simple. If the guy is at the door, don't just blast through it like the soldier did. Don't sit around waiting to shoot someone. Which I know many of these gun people do.
Here it is. Basically, you can use deadly force to defend all your property, not just inside your house. And you don't have to "retreat" to appease the intruder. So basically this will make things tough for robbers and other type folk. http://gacriminallawblog.com/2006/05/18/georgias-new-self-defense-bill-no-duty-to-retreat/ Georgia’s new self defense bill - No duty to retreat. Uncategorized Click here to read the bill as passed. Popularly referred to as the “Castle Doctrine” by the NRA, similar “Stand your ground” legislation is passing all over the country. While it is an interesting concept, my impression of Georgia law has always been that if there was an intruder in your home, you are justified in killing them. This bill codifies that premise and may go quite a bit further. You now have no duty to retreat in the use of force (even deadly force) in the defense of self or others, the defense of habitation, and the defense of property other than habitation. In addition to being immune from prosecution, you are also immune from civil liability for the use of such force.
Oldfella, the law is slightly vague but a guy in your yard is not a clear physical threat. No retreat does not automatically mean shoot to kill. You can shoot if they are breaking in but if you have a gun and see them you can easily stop them from breaking in.
So...follow me now....the burglar likely has a gun (he just took some of yours). You are supposed to wait for him to get in your house and aim a gun at you? At what point do you take action? Do you dodge the bullet like in The Matrix? We might have high crime around here, but at least The State of Georgia doesn't make things hard on the "good guys."
You are one scared dude. Not one person here would shout a warning? "Get away! I have a gun!" Yeah, maybe one shot through the door. Then wait to see what happens next. The odds are that you will hear a person running away. You're there ARMED. You've called the police. If its night time, you should be turning lights on. If you have outside lights you should be turning those on. Sheeesh!!
just call the police and let them do their job. oh, I'm sorry I forgot who I was talking to.......pardon me BATMAN!
Mewa...nice theory, but apparently the thugs around here didn't get your memo. You think the average Georgia bad guy is afraid of a gun? If he was HE WOULDN"T BE BREAKING INTO HOUSES. The average Georgia bad guy is: A. On drugs B. Stupid beyond all human understanding C. Armed himself D. Assumes you are probably bluffing so won't run away (firing a shot might scare them, but could make them fire back in self-defense). So, knowing all this you're not going to shoot if you feel threatened? Hey, whatever works for you I guess.
You live in a place I would never live in a million years. I'm starting to see the light. I want a shotgun and a few automatic handguns. And a big eash chair that swivels 360 degrees.
Now you're talking! That swivel chair is great. And the room with the chair could have huge one-way tinted windows so you can see every approach angle but they can't see you. Hey, homes are cheap here...come on down!
Mewa, you seem to want people to do everything possible to avoid killing someone who has willfully forfeited their life. Too bad. This is the heirarchy: My loved ones' lives > my life > the sanctity of my home > retention of my property > the life of the burglar.
Fuck that, Mewa. You try to paint it like the good guys are 'scared' and are going to blaze away in terror. Nuh uh. When the criminal breaks into my house, I'm going to do my best to off him with extreme prejudice. Not because I'm afraid. Not because I care about my shit. But because he deserves it. Because he's a person who has no respect for other people or their property, and is bold enough to be considered a danger. It's called doing society a favor, man. And as others have said, it's an easy fate to avoid- don't be a fucking criminal!
