What was the first handgun you ever purchased on your own?

    Mine was a Springfield XD40. :)

Desert Eagle, .44 Magnum, on the day I turned 21 in (gasp!) 1990!

Hardly the most practical handgun I could've bought, but it's sure been a lot of fun over the years...

...except that one time I got hot .44 brass down the front of my shirt...

..so begins another Vivid porn movie script.....

Anyway, my first handgun was a .357 Ruger pistol when I turned 21.
I bought it at the Fort Wainright PX in Alaska. I had to sell it when I left the Air Force and moved to Arizona, because I couldn't legally take a handgun through Canada driving down there.

Only if you mail it licensed dealer to another licensed dealer. I had a dealer on the Alaska end (another Air Force guy) but I didn't have time to set up an Arizona dealer before I had to leave.

I don't have one yet. When I do, it will be a 1911.

Great choice sir. I have one on my hip right now, and almost bought a 1911 in 10mm not 30 minutes ago. I recommend any Kimber, as long as it has an internal extractor. :)

Good choice, but IMO, id buy something like a like a S&W M&P, Glock, or Springfield XDm or Beretta PX4 as your first weapon. Get used to it. The 1911 is going to be a lot heavier than those three. That means carrying around that weight. Then there is getting used to carrying it in the condition that makes it most usable. I still think the 1911 is a great pistol, but I dont know if I would make it my first purchase as my primary weapon. Of course YMMV. Kimber is a great brand of 1911, but might also suggest the Taurus line. Most if not all of the features of the Kimber, but at about half the cost.

How does Taurus customer service compare to Kimber's? I've heard nothing but good about Kimber, experienced it myself first hand... but have heard little about Taurus. Seriously, what's up?

Ruger P85 9mm. Got it at cost ($250 or so?) from my best friend's dad who had a dealer's license at the time. >EDIT< This was in 1990.

Sold it about ten years ago. Got $350 for it. :D

It's actually the only gun that I've ever sold. I still own all the rest of them.

    That all makes perfect sense.

Even so, I'll still get a 1911 first. I'm not going to buy it for practical reasons, I'm going to buy it because it's fucking awesome.

For me it worked out great. Had a problem, called them, got the RMA authorization, sent it off and about 4 weeks later got my pistol back in fixed condition. I dont think you could beat that short of them dispatching a pistol smith to your home.

What's there to say? There are few things better on a nice summer afternoon than to round up some tin cans and maybe a paper bag with a target drawn on it with a Sharpie and a box of 50 rounds of .22 LR to head out to the back yard by the woods for an hour of plinking. :diacanu:

You could describe the gun, post a link to a similar one, etc. :)

It taks you an hour to shoot 50 rounds? I'm... envious. If I could do that, my budget would be cut in half!

    S&W M19 .357, 6", blue.

Figgered I'd start with a revolver and work my way up.

The next purchase was a Colt Gold Cup.

Yup. Somewhere. But ya know what one lookes like.

Had to have the barrel set back after about 10 years due to excessive corcing cone wear, and the timing fixed. The damn thing spit lead out of the side so bad I didn't dare fire it while standing next to someone.

4" S&W Model 29 with red ramp front and adjustable rear sights.

My dad gave me his duty 1911 on my 21st birthday. It still holds more sentimental value than anything else I own and it's one of exactly two guns I have that are not for sale at any given moment.

The other being my Rossi Coach Gun. That belonged to my paternal grandfather. Dad bought it for him one year for his birthday, 'cause he kept seeing snakes around his property when he cut his 5 acres worth of grass.

Several years ago, due to heart problems (don't need the thump on his shoulder), I traded him a S&W Chief's Special and a box of CCI's snake shot for the Coach Gun.

Quite simply, when it comes to those two guns, if it meant selling those two guns or putting food on the table, I'd go hungry. It'd be like a woman pawning her grandmother's wedding ring. It ain't gonna happen.

However, everything else I have is for sale if the price is right. :diacanu:

Oh, and I'll get one more.

In 1961, my paternal grandfather and my dad drove down to Western Auto and bought a replica Colt Single Action Army chambered in .22LR. Hell, I don't even know who made it off hand.

To this day, that is my grandpaw's gun and it's under the seat of his Lincoln Town Car as I type this. When he finally passes away, that gun becomes mine, and I'll treasure it for as long as I walk this earth and I'll pass it along to my children.
