Phase them out and ban their breading/ownership.
There are many animals that are illegal to keep as pets because of their inherent nature, simply stick pitbulls into that category

The smallest dogs always put on the biggest display. I guess since they have no bite they really gotta make the most of their bark. It's funny, our dog loves other dogs but just flat out ignores tiny barking dogs, no reaction, like they are invisible.

Oh no, the dog charged, if the owner hadn't come running out the front door I would have been screwed. I've been around dogs. I know a charge when I see it. Furthermore, I'm on a public sidewalk I shouldn't have to be worried about dogs "seeing what I will do". I'm walking/running they should be trained to deal with pedastrians, it's not like we live in the country. I live in the heart of the city. And I've seen them lose control of their dog before when they were there.
As for the term " white trash" ok, it does point out they are white, but as Anc said it's the same as saying ghetto, and I would say "ghetto" if it had been my black neighbors.
I don't know if it's a meth lab, but it for damn sure is the most unkempt house in the neighborhood, complete with abandoned car with broken down windows, unmowed lawn, busted windows in the house, trash on the lawn. I live in a working class neighborhood. Even if you are poor you can keep your home semi decent. These folks aren't even trying.

    People or the dogs?

    ;)

There's a category for species that are too dangerous to exist and must be actively pushed into extinction?

How high up on that list would you put dogs?

One of the nicest dogs I have ever met, if not the nicest was an APBT named Noodles. Naturally he barked when he first met me, but after my friend introduced me to Noodles, he would always greet me when I came over with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. Noodles also thought he was a lap dog, sitting on me when I was on the couch or sleeping on me when I slept over. One morning I actually woke up being pushed off the couch by Noodles. He never attacked or hurt anyone, he growled or barked at unfamilliar faces because he was defending his home. There is nothing wrong with that, and the dog you are describing is a bit overzealous with his guarding responsibilities, but he doesn't sound as though he is out of control if he easily healed when his master beckoned while he was charging you. That is one well trained dog, to be able to stop himself mid-charge when he is called.

You think maybe that training included home defense?

Extinction is a problem for animals who have no wild populations. I would not like to see the breed extinct completely, but i also dont think it should be legal for anyone that wants to own one to be given easy access to them.
I would be happy to see small numbers of liscences issued for breeding/ownership of things like this (like you would need to own any number of other dangerous animals, lions for instance) But not unregulated, unlicenced ownership

Completely agree, no dog, regardless of potential threat should be allowed to roam the streets. Really bothers me when people don't care for their pets. Last Friday there was a 60+ pound German Shepherd roaming through our neighborhood, I saw she had a collar and tags so I knew she was a pet. I tried to coax her over to my truck but she was scared to death and ran away. I followed, at a distance for about a half mile until she ran into a cul-de-sac. I parked, got out, sat on the curb and tried to get her to come over, she hid underneath an SUV. Just as I was going to call animal control an old beat-up pickup slowly drove around the cul-de-sac, which is what I would be doing if our dog went missing. So I whistled, the truck stopped and a woman asks if I've seen a dog.

Turns out that like our dog this dog "Sunny" came from the pound and hadn't received the best of treatment from people. This was the second day in her new home. Apparently she was gone for hours before they noticed she'd walked through a hole in their fence.

    Like pit bulls.

A much better alternative than phasing them out and banning their breeding/ownership.

Licensing dogs is already a requirement where I live but I know what you're saying and I too wish people had to have at least a basic understanding of an animal before they take it home. When we got our dog from the pound we were told our dog's history, what was needed to care for a dog. We were asked if we had the necessary space for a dog her size and the three of us (the pound worker, my wife and I) spent about a half hour with our dog in the outdoor exercise area to make sure we were all compatible.

If we do it to one breed we need to do to EVERY breed that has ever harmed a person.

Care to see how many of "man's best friend" will be on that list?
German Shepherds - great special needs dogs. Also great guard dogs, guide dogs, police dogs, rescue dogs, cadaver dogs ... but they have also done a great deal of harm in their career.

Same with just about any breed you care to name.

So why should we condemn one breed because the HUMANS involved in their breeding and care and keeping have made them so pissed off at the human race?

Condemn the ones responsible for the problem.

You mean, as far as you can see.

You don't know what's going on in the house or with the folks.

Some folks have to work two and three jobs, and that doesn't leave a lot of time for mowing lawns and fixing up the klunker that they were cursed with and can't afford to have towed away to the mechanic. Or stop the neighborhood kids who see any sitting item as potential target practice material.

Don't condemn them until you know for a fact they are lazy and not doing all they can with what they have.

I agree that there should be special licenses for those who want to breed the dogs.

But as with guns, if they are breeding the dog for illegal purposes, I don't think they'd get a license.

No just those breeds that A, solely exist because of breeding to kill, and B, cause the most problems. Any dog can possibly be dangerous, its just a case of working out likelyhood. When pitbulls were banned in the UK it was because the amount of attacks compared to the amount animals owned ratio was getting just too high

One of Nikki's "boyfriends" down the street is a Pit Bull named Buddy. When Mary walks Nikki and Buddy is out, they play together for a few minutes, nice and friendly. He's a nice dog that's never bothered anyone.

That said, his owner keeps him tied to a really big tree. :)

But our town wisely has leash laws, and I wish everyobne would frickin obey them. Can't tell you how many times we've been walking Nikki and an agressive dog has run out at her, or followed us ominously down the street. And, btw, none of those have ever been Pit Bulls. Hell, the Cocker Spaniel a few blocks over is the most agressive dog in the neighborhood.

You can be poor and not trashy. I don't care how many jobs you work, you can not throw trash on your lawn and take the 20 30 minutes every couple of weeks to keep the grass at least managable.

Hmmm, how is it the kids on our street miss every house but theirs? I'm sorry but even when my folks were totally broke and we had no phone, the electric shut off a couple times, they were working multiple jobs, they still kept our house respectable.
Seems like you are defending these folks just to play devil's advocate. Vicious dog and all.

You know how many breeds were bred to kill? Poodles, Weiner dogs, all terriers...

I'm gonna give Vandy the benefit of the doubt on this one. Sounds like white trash to me, and I know for a fact that there's a lot of them in Nashville.

If it have been a meth house, I think the smell would have given it away though.

Umm, last time I checked the sidewalk and accompanying street are not his home. I live in the city. Your home stops at the door. Front 3 feet of lawn at the best. Furthermore, someone walking on the sidewalk not even coming near the house shouldn't be seen as a threat if this lovable scamp were actually trained properly.

I've seen pitbulls with the nicest, friendliest owners go bat-shit crazy. I've also seen other dogs go bat-shit crazy, though usually that was because of their environment. I think pitbulls just seem more indisposed to go a little crazy. Maybe we just need to feed them more puppy prozac or something.

What is up with puppy prozac? That's a really strange phenomenon are we that linked to our dogs that now people want to give them the same meds too?

I might be wrong, but I don't suspect that Vandy would make an issue out of me saying that I almost got jumped by a dog belonging to a bunch of hood-rats in a meth house in Whitehaven.
