So there I am running down the street, working on my new fitness program, when out comes a mean nasty pitbull from the white trash meth lab people a block down!!! He wasn't leashed, and he was pretty much ready to bite off my leg. The beast cut me off so I had to freeze. (I'm very fond of my skin remaining unpunctured) Then it's straight off the TN farm/meth lab/ weed field owner comes out and calls the dog back. The dog stands there for a minute then comes back. But what if the owner hadn't heard? And there are kids on that street what if the dog attacks one of them who doesn't know what to do?
I love dogs. I love, love, love them.
But pitbulls, those things are horrible and I am convinced they are for mean and/or psychotic people.

They are bred and exist for one thing and one thing only, to bite things 'til they die. Even the sweetest nicest, never given any trouble pitbull can turn in one second and get the red mist. Im glad they are not allowed here

Carnivores that I can't kill with certainty in one-on-one combat make me a little nervous...

Actually, if you remember, even Petey was always biting people on the ass, and hanging off 'em.

Anyway, Vandy, that's why most English in medieval times carried a well balanced walking staff...

But with dogs that have been bred for hundreds of years to do just one thing, fight, and destroy anything they bite its a bit more of a problem :)

    I guess.

Traits like aggression, stamina, and proper fighting ability can be bred, but the actual temperament of the animal rests largely in it's upbringing. All dogs are essentially baby wolves, and anyone who isn't in the pack can lose a finger or two.

They were bred specifically to be dog aggressive. A good pure-bred APBT shouldn't be people aggressive at all. Problem is irresponsible breeders and trash owners. Without that, the APBT should be no different than a Staffy or a bulldog, both of which are allowed in Britain. They were all bred as fighting dogs.

So I guess I need to carry a staff along with me on my next jogging trip? Even though I live in modern day Nashville, TN, USA and not Sherwood Forest??

Not to mention this beast is on my way to work and school. The only other option is walking a block and a half out of my way. Grrrrr. I am so pissed, that thing should be put down. Along with the owners really, who have by far the trashiest, most poorly kept house in the neighborhood.

Bulldogs have basically been re-domesticated... ish. Many of their aggressive tendencies have been lost over the past 150 years or so. In fact, if a bulldog did decide to fight it would probably not be of much use. Staffs are similar, but less so, a friend of mine is a staff breeder, a very responsible one, but if it was up to me, i would have them made illegal as well. There are many dogs to choose from that have all the good dog qualities of a staff, but arn't total killing machines by nature

My cousin had a couple of pit bulls when I was a teenager. My experience having "played" with them? They're tremendously strong.

I wouldn't be too confident about plunging their eyes out once they've got a hold of you. If they're angry, sticking your hand anywhere near their mouth is liable to cost you fingers. They're too heavy to really lift, so they throw you off balance easily. And, yes, they will go for your nuts once they get you on the ground...

Your cousins Pit's were poorly bred. They shouldn't be very big. 60lbs would be a damn big for an APBT. If you see one bigger than that, then it's probably a mix with a larger breed.
